APRIM Asia-Pacific Regional IAU Meeting 2026

The HKU Laboratory for Space Research (LSR) is delighted to present a special classical music concert, La Symphonie de l’Universe (The Symphony of the Universe), as part of the 2026 Asia-Pacific Regional IAU Meeting (APRIM2026).

The concert will take place on Thursday, 7 May 2026, from 7PM to 8PM at the Grand Hall of the Lee Shau Kee Conference Centre, The University of Hong Kong.

Specially commissioned for APRIM2026, this original 10-movement symphony by award-winning local composer Shirley Choi takes the form of a musical journey through space. The performance will be brought to life by a unique combined orchestra of able and disabled musicians from the Hong Kong Arts without Boundaries Foundation, with all proceeds supporting the ongoing work of the Foundation.

🌌 In 2026, the sky is no longer just the domain of astronomers, aviation or tech companies. From ground level to low-altitude airspace, through 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗢𝗿𝗯𝗶𝘁 (𝗟𝗘𝗢), and beyond into deep space, the entire vertical domain is becoming increasingly crowded—and in greater need of #𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

The rapid growth of the 𝗹𝗼𝘄‑𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 has turned drone logistics, cross-border low-altitude corridors, and urban air mobility into new industrial frontiers. At the same time, these systems rely heavily on 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲‑𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 —including satellite navigation, weather monitoring, and geospatial data—much of which resides in LEO.

With that world’s astronomy and space community gathering in 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗼𝗻𝗴 for 𝗔𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗠 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 — the largest astronomy conference in the Asia‑Pacific, this presents a rare opportunity to bring together scientists, industry leaders, and policymakers to address a shared core question: 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙬𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝, 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝙨𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙨𝙠𝙮?

The expansion of the 𝗹𝗼𝘄‑𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 brings increased communication signals, nighttime lighting, and airspace demands—all of which can affect 𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 as wel as 𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 in LEO. Conversely, the precision positioning, sensing, and tracking capabilities developed through astronomy and space technology are essential for the safe development of the low-altitude economy. With both an active 𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 and the 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮’𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘄‑𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲, Hong Kong offers a uniquely relevant setting for this dialogue.
