Three things I don’t stop my toddler from doing, even when every instinct says step in:
1.Touching everything. Different textures, temperatures, surfaces. This is how she understands the world, not everything needs a “no.”
2.Taking things out and making a mess. Emptying the shelf, the basket, the drawer. It looks like chaos; it’s real work. Order comes later.
3.Doing things “the wrong way.” At this age there’s no wrong, only exploration, repetition, learning.
But, and this matters, I do stop some things. I just choose my boundaries carefully.
The skill isn’t controlling everything. It’s knowing which battles actually protect her, and letting the rest be learning.
This is exactly what I want my auntie doing too, watching for the boundary that matters, and stepping back from the ones that don’t.
Save this for the next time the mess makes you twitch.

At the weekend, I got frustrated with my 5-year-old daughter.
We were out on the street, it was noisy and she was trying to tell me something - and I asked her to repeat herself five times.

Five times.

I felt that familiar irritation rising.
Not necessarily at her, but at the noise, at not being able to understand, at not knowing why she speaks so quietly; and then I stopped - because I know exactly where that comes from 🥺

I didn’t grow up with Montessori.
I grew up in a home where quiet wasn’t really valued, where listening wasn’t intentional, where my voice wasn’t always held.
Where emotions weren’t named.
Where noise and chaos were just… absorbed.
Where if you were sensitive, you learned to hide it.

And because I didn’t break, my dad would say I “turned out fine” but fine looks like this - getting frustrated at my daughter for something that has nothing to do with her.
It looks like carrying my nervous system’s old rules into her childhood.

The difference isn’t just that she has Montessori and I didn’t.
The difference is that I’m noticing, and noticing - that’s where it changes.

Not just for her, but for me too ✨

Most people assume it’s behaviour, or personality, or often that children are just “better” at school 😅 but often… it’s something much simpler.

At school, the environment is designed for the child.
At home, it usually isn’t - and that’s no one’s fault.

When children can reach things, choose things and do things for themselves…everything shifts.

Less “no.”
More independence.
More calm (for everyone).

It’s not about doing more.
It’s about setting things up differently 🤍

I filmed Eva playing with her stacking rings and didn’t say a word. Not once.
She got frustrated. She tried again. She worked it out.
That’s what we teach at our Easter workshop - how to create the space for your child to grow, and what to do (and not do) while they figure things out.
