At the weekend, I got frustrated with my 5-year-old daughter.
We were out on the street, it was noisy and she was trying to tell me something - and I asked her to repeat herself five times.
Five times.
I felt that familiar irritation rising.
Not necessarily at her, but at the noise, at not being able to understand, at not knowing why she speaks so quietly; and then I stopped - because I know exactly where that comes from đĽş
I didnât grow up with Montessori.
I grew up in a home where quiet wasnât really valued, where listening wasnât intentional, where my voice wasnât always held.
Where emotions werenât named.
Where noise and chaos were just⌠absorbed.
Where if you were sensitive, you learned to hide it.
And because I didnât break, my dad would say I âturned out fineâ but fine looks like this - getting frustrated at my daughter for something that has nothing to do with her.
It looks like carrying my nervous systemâs old rules into her childhood.
The difference isnât just that she has Montessori and I didnât.
The difference is that Iâm noticing, and noticing - thatâs where it changes.
Not just for her, but for me too â¨
Evolve Sprouts
Montessori-based helper training and family support for Hong Kong families with children aged 0-6. Founded by Ida De Gregorio, AMI Montessori-certified.
Most people assume itâs behaviour, or personality, or often that children are just âbetterâ at school đ
but often⌠itâs something much simpler.
At school, the environment is designed for the child.
At home, it usually isnât - and thatâs no oneâs fault.
When children can reach things, choose things and do things for themselvesâŚeverything shifts.
Less âno.â
More independence.
More calm (for everyone).
Itâs not about doing more.
Itâs about setting things up differently đ¤
I filmed Eva playing with her stacking rings and didnât say a word. Not once.
She got frustrated. She tried again. She worked it out.
Thatâs what we teach at our Easter workshop - how to create the space for your child to grow, and what to do (and not do) while they figure things out.
