【ASCEND Tech For Good Scheme】🎮Building Digital Literacy and Competence through Gamified Learning, Unlocking New Possibilities
🎉 “UX Gym : Digital Literacy Community Hub” Officially Launched! 🎉

Digital technology is now part of everyday life. What matters is not just using it, but making informed choices, staying safe, and solving real-world problems.
Developed by Game Noodle Soup, a youth‑led team under ASCEND, UX Gym officially launched its new initiative, “UX Gym: Digital Literacy Community Hub,” on 21 April at Chi Lin Buddhist Primary School.

As the first partner school, Chi Lin Buddhist Primary School is working closely with UX Gym to connect learning across the classroom, the home, and the wider community. Through game-based lessons and interactive experiences, students move beyond basic use toward informed judgement and practical application. Parents are also involved, allowing digital literacy and competence to take root naturally within the family.

The launch was officiated by Prof. K.K. Ling, Senior Advisor to the President of PolyU and Co‑Chair of the ASCEND Management Committee, Ms Sam Lam, Interim Director of J.C.DISI; Ms Christine Kwok, Senior Manager (Charities) of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, Principal Lo Kam‑Yuen of Chi Lin Buddhist Primary School, Mr Anderson Yu, Founder of Gamenoodlesoup and Mr Toby Tai, Co‑founder of Gamenoodlesoup. They were joined by around 300 guests, including representatives from the education sector, community partners, as well as teachers, students and parents to make the occasion.

The interactive sessions that followed, including the “Password Defense Challenge” classroom experience and intergenerational gaming activities, drew strong engagement, with UX Gym’s approach placing emphasis on hands-on experience over explanation.

💡 At its core, the project is simple: to make digital literacy and competence part of daily life, not something abstract. As children develop the ability to make informed decisions and parents gain the confidence to participate, small changes begin to take shape within families.

💕Over time, as more people are able to use digital tools to support themselves and others, connections strengthen and barriers diminish The digital world becomes a space where everyone can take part .

﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏﹏
The ASCEND Scheme is led by PolyU J.C.DISI and the Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurship (KTEO), and funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. As a flagship initiative under the Jockey Club Smart Teens Actions Series, ASCEND continues to nurture six youth startup teams to promote digital inclusion through innovation and technology, working together to build a more liveable and inclusive smart city. Join us in witnessing the power of youth‑driven change! 💪🏻

【Aspiring Young Planners】Passion Beyond Transport 🚌 Seeing the Community with Empathy💞

Many secondary school students are genuine transport enthusiasts with a deep interest in transit networks. By channelling this passion into observing the people and stories within their neighbourhoods, they can become young urban planners and learn to balance the needs of diverse stakeholders.

In recent years, J.C.DISI has partnered with the Hong Kong Association of Transport Education (HKATE) to launch the " 2.0" Programme, taking students into the heart of the community to master the fundamentals of human-centred design💡

🔍 Sau Mau Ping, Kwun Tong – Identifying Elderly Needs (2023)
Equipping students with J.C.DISI’s " " as their auditing tool, we provided them with a common language for observation. Stepping into the shoes of the elderly and adopting their daily routines, students inspected the community's spatial planning and design. Through this shared assessment language and careful observation, they uncovered easily overlooked details of daily life.

💬 During the audit, one student noted, "I realised that elderly residents with a persistent stoop has a restricted field of vision, and simply cannot see most signage that requires looking up.

🎒 Queen's Hill Estate, Fanling – Exploring All-Age Communities (2025)
With residents of all ages moving into this newly developed area, we specially curated an session. We designed the "empathy gear" to let students personally experience the daily challenges and needs of visually impaired individuals, pregnant women, the elderly, and their carers when navigating the community.

💬 One student shared, "It was only when experiencing the pregnant woman simulation that I realised even a slight uphill slope becomes strenuous, and I became particularly aware of uneven spots on the pavement."

Through their own first-hand experience, students empathised with the needs of various community users and successfully extended these insights into urban design and planning concepts, advancing .

J.C.DISI is committed to driving knowledge transfer, translating research into a common language that everyone can feel and understand, and connecting it with community practice. Want to collaborate with us to translate valuable user experiences into tangible urban design applications? Feel free to reach out to us! 🤝

J.C.DISI’s newsletter, InnoGood • Zine, features the "PolyU Northern Metropolis Future Forum Season 3" held on 14 April. A major highlight was the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PolyU and the Research Institute of Better China Initiative of CAA (the Research Institute). Furthermore, our Interim Director, Ms Sam Lam, has been appointed as a Think Tank Expert of the Research Institute, further deepening the exchange between the two parties.

Notably, J.C.DISI contributed to the Research Institute’s “Perception Map” project, sharing a range of research findings and practical insights into social innovation, design thinking, and community placemaking through the platform.
