Real Estate Minor Students Hit the Streets in First “Professional Practice Challenges” Bootcamp
The Department of Economics and Finance is proud to celebrate the successful launch of our inaugural mini-bootcamp for the new RICS-Accredited Minor in Real Estate Finance and Investment. Held last Saturday, the event kicked off the “Professional Practice Challenges”, a cornerstone of the programme designed to bridge academic theory with real-world application. This new minor offers BBA (Finance and Banking) students a direct pathway to becoming a Chartered Surveyor, and this first bootcamp set a dynamic tone for the practical learning ahead.
Students began their day with an immersive visit to the City Gallery, gaining vital insights into the complex urban planning and development that shapes Hong Kong. The learning then moved to the field with an extensive site visit across Tsim Sha Tsui and Hung Hom. Tasked with a real-world problem, our students were challenged to identify and evaluate investment opportunities in key subsectors like medical centres, commercial shopping malls, and student dormitories, applying their classroom knowledge to tangible assets.
A highlight of the day was the direct engagement with industry leaders. We were thrilled to welcome Mr. Alvin Leung, an esteemed industry expert invited by the leader of the Professional Practice Challenges, Prof. Keith McKinnel. Acting as “the Client”, Mr. Leung shared current market intelligence on investment opportunities and will guide and assess the students’ performance throughout their projects. This direct mentorship ensures our students gain an invaluable industry perspective, preparing them to excel in the competitive real estate sector.

On the morning of 11 September, our department hosted a tea reception to welcome our new cohort of mainland students. Held from 10:30 to 11:30 AM, the event provided a relaxed and friendly setting for students and faculty members to connect and get to know each other better.
Around 30 mainland students joined the reception, which began with warm welcome remarks from the department head. This was followed by a helpful presentation delivered in Mandarin by one of our colleagues, covering key school regulations and academic requirements — an important and reassuring session for students adjusting to a new academic environment.
The highlight of the reception, however, was the informal interaction between students and teachers over tea and cakes. Laughter and conversation filled the room as both sides engaged in open and friendly dialogue. Many students took the opportunity to share their aspirations and the challenges they’ve encountered so far. Teachers responded with encouragement, practical advice, and a genuine willingness to support.
The session officially ended with a group photo to capture the moment, but the room remained lively as several students lingered to continue the conversation with faculty members. It was clear that the event succeeded not only in providing useful information but also in fostering a sense of community and support — a promising start to the academic journey ahead.
