We are delighted to announce a two-day symposium centred on corpus-based interpreting studies. This event aims to bring together researchers, practitioners, and scholars to explore cutting-edge developments in the field, promote collaboration, and discuss future directions for research.

The symposium will take place in a mixed mode (in-person at Hong Kong Baptist University and online via Zoom) on 9–10 June 2025.

Themes
We invite submissions addressing a wide range of topics related to corpus-based interpreting studies, including but not limited to:
- Methodologies and technologies for building and re-engineering interpreting corpora
- Data mining techniques and innovative strategies for interpreting research
- Corpora and the development of computer-assisted tools for interpreting
- Theoretical advancements in corpus-based interpreting studies
- Comparative studies of interpreting and translation corpora
- Identifying and testing “universals” of interpreting through corpus-based research
- Integration of interpreting corpora with large language models (LLMs) and AI
- AI-enhanced interpreting systems: Leveraging interpreting corpora for innovation
- Human-AI collaboration in interpreting: Insights from interpreting corpora
- Automatic speech recognition (ASR) and interpreting: Corpus-based development and applications
- Ethical challenges in compiling and using interpreting corpora
- Interdisciplinary applications of interpreting corpora in linguistics, communication studies, computational linguistics, cognitive science, and beyond

Submission Details
We invite proposals for Individual Presentations (20 minutes with 10 minutes for Q&A) in English.
Abstracts should be 250–300 words and must clearly outline the research question, methodology, and (if applicable) preliminary findings.
Submissions must be written in English.
The submission should include the title of the presentation, the presenter’s name, institution, email address, and a short bio (50 words).
- Submission Deadline: 12 May 2025

We are pleased to announce that the 1st CEPIC Forum has been successfully held on 10 May. Big congratulations to the presenters and great thanks to the participants!

06/03/2023

We cordially invite you to join the first CEPIC forum, scheduled on 10 May 2023. In this event, we would like to share how we leverage this corpus to study translation and interpreting, as well as to hear from other scholars how they make use of the corpus in their own research. The format of the forum is informal, which aims to provide a platform for exchanges on corpora research and perhaps lead to possible collaborative research. This is a great opportunity to exchange points of view and receive advice, if needed, on how to utilise this electronic resource.
The forum will be held in mixed mode, and the initial idea is to gather regularly with scholars that make use of, or are interested in using, the CEPIC corpus.
If you are interested in joining this forum, please email your name, a short bio, and a blurb of 50-100 words for a 10-minute presentation to [email protected] on or before 20 Apr.

Janice Jun PAN: From corpus-based interpreting studies to interpreting data “mining”: breaking the boundaries

Interpreting has existed since ancient times and evolved into a professional activity since the beginning of the past century. There is a large amount of interpreting-related data that is worthy of scientific exploration. Nevertheless, the systematic collection and analysis of such data were not possible until the recent advancement of corpus-based interpreting studies.

In this talk, I will start with a review of corpus-based interpreting studies, and then move on to introduce the progress of several corpora projects that I have engaged in. The first is the Chinese/English Political Interpreting Corpus (CEPIC), a 6.5-million-word-token corpus that includes transcripts of politician talks, and their translation and interpreting over a 21-year span. Two other on-going projects will also be discussed: one on student interpreters and translators, and the other on the perceived role of interpreters.

Through these examples, I hope to illustrate some possible ways to build synergies with digital humanities and data science, which will help to further advance the subdiscipline of corpus-based interpreting studies and serve a fruitful future direction.
