From 11 to 13 May, Prof Xin Yao, Vice-President (Research and Innovation) and Tong Tin Sun Chair Professor of Machine Learning of Lingnan University, was at the 2026 World Digital Education Conference in Hangzhou, and visited Zhejiang University (ZJU) to strengthen cooperation and exchanges. This trip was to focus on digital-era higher education transformation and inter-university collaboration, explain Lingnan’s practices with the global education and tech communities, and reach a general agreement with ZJU on their further cooperation.⭐

嶺南大學精英運動員入學獎學金2024-25學年得主 Edouard Jean-Pierre Cooper Barnes (Ed)(工商管理 - 市場學與社交媒體，二年級) 於5月22至24日代表「港會隊長選手隊」，出戰在跑馬地舉行的「香港足球會七人足球賽2026」。🥅🏃🏻‍♂️

本屆賽事有16隊海外及本地勁旅，「港會隊長選手隊」被編入A組，同組對手實力強勁，包括上屆冠軍荷甲球隊阿爾克馬爾、英超的韋斯咸，以及中國香港代表隊。其他參賽勁旅包括英超球會阿士東維拉、白禮頓及列斯聯，蘇超的格拉斯哥流浪，以及港超聯的理文及標準流浪等。✨

Edouard Jean-Pierre Cooper Barnes (Ed) (BBA - Marketing and Social Media, Year 2), recipient of the Lingnan University Entrance Scholarship for Elite Athletes in 2024-25, made his debut at HKFC - Soccer Sevens 2026 from 22 to 24 May, representing the Hong Kong Football Club Captains’ Select team at Happy Valley. 🥅🏃🏻‍♂️

A total of 16 top-tier overseas and local teams contested this year's tournament. Drawn in Group A, Ed’s team faced the reigning champions, Dutch team AZ Alkmaar, West Ham United from London, and the Hong Kong China Representative Team. Other powerhouse teams lit up the tournament included the English Premier League’s Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Leeds United, alongside Rangers FC from Glasgow, and local Hong Kong Premier League giants Lee Man FC, and BC Rangers.✨

Two Lingnan University students delivered outstanding performances at the final of the China Daily "21st Century Cup" National English Speaking Competition 2026 (Hong Kong Region). Hoang Thu Trang (English, Year 1) and Seemi Nisar (Economics, Year 4), mentored by the Visiting English Tutors at the Centre for English and Additional Languages throughout their journey, won the Second Runner-up and the Best Impromptu Speaker prizes respectively in the university category, demonstrating their language proficiency, quick thinking under pressure, and strong analytical skills.🌟

Lingnan University held its JUPAS Consultation Day 2026 on 16 May at Lingnan@West Kowloon in the M+ Tower, West Kowloon Cultural District, offering timely practical guidance to HKDSE candidates ahead of their results and their final opportunity to adjust programme choices. The event’s 360-degree “festivalisation” approach transforms the often high-pressure JUPAS decision period into a more pleasant and supportive experience, and highlights of the day included a JUPAS Strategy Talk by Mr Ng Po-shing, Vice-Principal and Student Guidance Consultant at the Hok Yau Club, as well as presentations on the latest admissions information and Lingnan’s global opportunities. 【祝賀港產航天員黎家盈參與神舟23號載人飛行任務🚀 嶺大學者建碳排放數據庫 助「天韻相機」從太空定點監測溫室氣體🛰️✨】

嶺南大學恭賀黎家盈參與神舟23號載人飛行任務，成為香港特區首位航天員，並有望於太空操作由香港科技大學主導研發的航天科研儀器「天韻相機」。

項目由嶺南大學深圳研究院院長、伍絜宜跨學科學院副教授（校長卓越青年學者）李佳教授及其研究團隊提供碳排放源數據庫中的關鍵數據，用作比對「天韻相機」觀測地球所得的溫室氣體數據，包括二氧化碳及甲烷排放源頭，協助精準識別不同地區電力及工業設施等排放的強度及分佈，為國家實現「碳達峰、碳中和」提供重要的科研支援。💪

【Congratulations to Hong Kong SAR astronaut Lai Ka-ying on participating in manned spaceflight🚀 Lingnan University carbon emissions database supports MUSICO’s space-based greenhouse gas monitoring🛰️✨】

Lingnan University congratulates Hong Kong SAR astronaut Lai Ka-ying on participating in Shenzhou-23 manned spaceflight mission, where she will probably operate the Multi-Spectral Imaging Carbon Observatory (MUSICO), a space-based research instrument led by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).

Prof Li Jia, Director of the Lingnan University Shenzhen Research Institute (LUSZRI), and Associate Professor (Presidential Early Career Scholar) of the Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies (WJYSIS) at Lingnan University, together with her research team, contributed key data from a carbon emissions source database for the project, which will be used to compare greenhouse gas data including carbon dioxide and methane emission sources observed by MUSICO, helping researchers identify emission intensity and distribution patterns of power and industrial facilities across different regions more accurately, thereby providing robust scientific support for China’s carbon-peaking and carbon-neutrality goals.💪

【嶺大與成均館大學合辦心理學研討會💡涵蓋AI道德及快樂動機等研究】

嶺南大學心理學系與成均館大學心理學系延續長期學術合作，於5月7日在首爾舉辦第三屆心理學聯合研討會。🧠活動由成均館大學心理學系副教授Kim Minue教授主持，邀請兩校學者分享心理學研究成果，吸引數十名成均館大學碩士和博士生參與。

嶺大心理學系副教授徐杰教授首先分享七個實驗研究，分析人工智能對人的道德影響。🤖這一系列的研究發現，相較於AI給予的利他建議，人們更傾向於採納真實人類的利他建議。心理學系助理教授林立教授其後分享了三個關於快樂動機的研究。😊這些研究探討了愉悅型、意義型、和外部型快樂動機對學齡兒童的幸福感、中學生的學業困擾，以及父母的教養行為有何影響。

【Lingnan University and Sungkyunkwan University co-organise the 3rd Joint Symposium, sharing research on AI ethics and happiness motivations💡】

The Departments of Psychology at Lingnan University and Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) extended their long-standing academic partnership with the 3rd Joint Symposium in Seoul on 7 May, chaired by Prof Kim Minue, Associate Professor of the Department of Psychology at SKKU.🧠Scholars from both universities discussed their research, and dozens of MPhil and PhD students from SKKU attended.

Prof Jay Xu Jie, Associate Professor of the Department of Psychology at Lingnan University, described seven experimental studies examining the moral influence of AI on human beings.🤖These find that people are more inclined to adopt advice from real human beings than from AI.

Prof Jocelyn Lin Li, Assistant Professor of the Department of Psychology at Lingnan, outlined three studies on motivational types of happiness😊, exploring how hedonic, eudaimonic, and extrinsic motivations affect children’s well-being, adolescents’ academic distress, and parents’ child-rearing behaviours.

The Hong Kong Direct Subsidy Scheme Schools Council Limited (DSSSC) and Lingnan University officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 19th May 2026. The two parties announced they will work together to provide systematic advancement support for non-local students in Direct Subsidy Scheme schools. This collaboration marks Lingnan as the sixth local university to sign an MoU with the DSSSC, showcasing the DSSSC’s fruitful achievements in driving close cooperation with local tertiary institutions. By establishing strategic admission channels and comprehensive transitional support, both parties aim to actively support and promote the government's "Study in Hong Kong" brand, jointly nurturing outstanding talents and enhancing Hong Kong's attractiveness as an international education hub.⭐

【Lingnan University President S. Joe Qin attends 2026 Hong Kong-Macao-Shandong Week 🤝🎤】

The 2026 Hong Kong-Macao-Shandong Week began on 18 May, and Prof S. Joe Qin, President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University, attended the symposium for distinguished representatives from the Hong Kong SAR and the Macao SAR to discuss cooperation and development.

Prof Qin delivered a speech highlighting that Lingnan University and Shandong have developed multi-dimensional and in-depth collaborative partnerships. "Shandong has a strong industrial foundation and a broad range of application scenarios, while the Hong Kong SAR is rapidly building momentum in artificial intelligence and big data. Combining the strengths of both places will unlock limitless potential for mutually beneficial cooperation in industrial AI and green low-carbon transformation. During the 15th Five-Year Plan, Lingnan University hopes to continue to increase cooperation and collaborative development between Shandong and the Hong Kong and Macao SARs."
