How can AI and innovation power Hong Kongโs role as a global I&T hub?
At the 2026 Hong Kong Innovation Forum co hosted by HKUST and CICC, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government Mr. Paul CHAN, HKUST Council Chairman Prof. Harry SHUM, and CICC Chairman Mr. CHEN Liang set the scene for cross sector collaboration.
In his opening speech, Mr. Paul Chan said that Hong Kong is well placed to drive the next wave of I&T development by leveraging its โFinance+โ strategy and the innovation and financial resources of the Greater Bay Area.
On the same occasion, the HKUST R and D Corporation Limited and CICC signed a Memorandum of Understanding to further deepen the integration of academic research resources, innovative capital, and industrial ecosystems.
Thought leaders then shared insights on a wide range of topics such as AI chips, innovation driven growth, and the rise of GBA technology brands, including HKUST Vice-President for Research and Development Prof. Tim CHENG; 2011 Nobel Laureate in Economics and Professor at New York University Prof. Thomas SARGENT; Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Distinguished Chair Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Prof. CHAN Ching-Chuen; HKUST Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering and Director of the Automation Technology Center Prof. LI Zexiang; and CICC Chief Economist, Head of Research Department and Executive Dean of CICC Global Institute Mr PENG Wensheng.
School of Engineering alumnus and PanopticAI Co-Founder & CEO Dr. Kyle WONG also joined an esteemed group of entrepreneurs and academics in a roundtable discussion on innovation and industrial integration.

A team of researchers at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has uncovered the microscopic mechanism behind ultra-fast ion transport in superionic crystals, an advance that could accelerate the development of next-generation energy storage technologies.
Led by Prof. ZHOU Yanguang, the study provides new insights into how ions move at exceptional speeds, paving the way for safer and more efficient solid-state batteries.

Civil and Environmental Engineering graduates Howard CHEUNG Yau-Ming and Roland CHENG Ming-Yeung have been recognised in the HKIE Environmental Divisionโs 2024/25 Best Final Year Environmental Project (Individual Project) Competition, claiming Champion and Second Runner-Up respectively.
Supervised by Prof. Irene LO, Chair Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the two projects advance sustainable solutions in water treatment. Now an MPhil in Civil Engineering student and an Engineering Student Ambassador (ESA), Howard focuses on safer drinking water systems, while Roland, currently pursuing an MSc in Civil Infrastructural Engineering and Management, explores sustainable saline wastewater treatment.
