It’s been an eventful few months for the English Department! 🗓️🥳
Our English teachers were thrilled to see such active student participation throughout English Week. We had the honor of hosting Vivek Mahbubani for a stand-up comedy session, where laughter truly reverberated through the hall! 🤣 We also can’t forget our extremely talented English Drama Club—their quick wit and energy made it impossible not to enjoy their improv show. 🕺 Plus, SSC students enjoyed visiting the Book Fair during their English lessons! 📚
In addition, S3 students took part in experiential learning 🔍 through field trips to Yau Ma Tei, Sham Shui Po, and Tsim Sha Tsui. They transformed their footsteps 👣 and memories into creative travel brochures, showcasing a deep understanding of local culture and social issues during their presentations. 🗣️
Last but not least, we would like to once again congratulate the students who competed and received awards in this school year's speech, debate, and writing competitions. 💖👏🏻 We commend you all for your hard work, creativity, and dedication; these are no easy feats and are truly wonderful achievements! 💫
We look forward to seeing even more of your passion and brilliance in the months to come—keep up the fantastic work, everyone!

This year, our S5 students once again visited HKU’s Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine for two inspiring experiential learning workshops. 🧬🔬
Through sessions with experienced HKU professors, students explored how AI is transforming technology, education, and medicine. They also gained hands-on experience with the VR tools and programs that current medical students use to master human anatomy. 🥽🧑🔬👩🔬
Moving beyond foundational knowledge, they were inspired to learn about the vital role of "great body teachers" and the profound meaning behind their work.
This unique cross-collaboration between our English and Biology departments transformed textbook knowledge into tangible, essential tools for our students' futures. 📖⚒️

🎭Drama kings and queens in action!!
Earlier this week, our S1 students put on three shows of the SSC rendition of ‘Our Town’, an American play written by the famous playwright Thornton Wilder, in our very own Carol Yang Blackbox Theatre. The shows were in the format of reader’s theatre, where performers read scripts aloud with extra focus on vocal expressions using voice, tone and pacing.
Dressed in all black, all of our talented and youthful S1 boys and girls played different roles on stage and backstage to tell the heartwarming and inspiring story of Emily Webb and George Gibbs, reminding our audience of the beauty of living, the significance of the ordinary and the preciousness of time. With their hard work over the past few months, the three shows were a huge success, and a testament to our students’ commitment, talents and growth.
Special thanks to Jen Lam, our alumnus and director of the show, for her incredible planning and directions. Also to all the parents who joined us as members of the audience! The shows would not have been possible without your support!!

🔍Experiential learning is at the heart of our English curriculum. Through visits, field trips and other hands-on activities, we provide authentic contexts in which students connect language learning with real-life experiences.
In the second term…
🫖S3 students joined a walking tour of Sham Shui Po, Yau Ma Tei and other neighbourhoods to deepen their understanding of traditional customs and grassroots culture. They then produced exquisite travel brochures and presented them to their classmates.📝
🏛️S4 DSE students paid a visit to local heritage sites, including Tai Kwun, PMQ, Blue House and Asia Society Hong Kong Center, where tour guides introduced them to Hong Kong’s efforts at conservation and revitalisation. Presentations will take place later this week.
What we teach in the classroom comes to life at these fun and enriching activities. More to come in 2025-26! 🔥

In late February, the English Week was back with a bang! 🎉 Just like last year, we worked with a large local bookstore to bring an exciting array of English fiction and non-fiction books 📚 to SSC, all at discounted prices. Students had a great time checking out the teachers’ picks, scooping up copies of their own, and visiting the three English Society game booths. 🎮 The highlight of the week was no doubt the English Drama Club’s mesmerizing rendition of the American play ‘Our Town’ 🎭 at the whole-school assembly. Having planned and rehearsed for months, our young talents delivered a profound message on life and death. 🌟 With the generous support of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and our artist-in-residence, Ms. Jen Lam, English and Drama at SSC are surely scaling new heights! 🚀

With a new ‘Drama in Education’ programme being rolled out across junior forms, students get to study a play each year 🎭 and act it out 🎬, expressing themselves creatively through language ✨. In January and February, teachers attended drama workshops 🧑🏫🎟️ offered by the EDB and experimented with ‘Story Whoosh’ in S1 classrooms 📖. Look at how much fun everyone is having! 😄🙌
