Students get virtual lesson in modern-day slavery 18/03/2022

In collaboration with the Mekong Club Hong Kong and CNN in support of CNN’s annual global event, Freedom Day (March 16th), KGV invited parents and students to take part in the ‘CNN Freedom Day Sweatshop Challenge’.

The event offered participants a taste of what it is like to experience a sweatshop situation and to raise funding for the Mekong Club.

Post-COVID, the number of human trafficking victims has increased significantly. At the same time, funding to address this problem has been diverted to health-related activities. This event was hoping to raise much needed awareness and funding to work with the private sector to help encourage them to address the problem of modern day slavery.

Interested in teaching or helping the Hong Kong community? Consider applying to be a Summerbridge Hong Kong Student Teacher for the 2021 summer!

Summerbridge Hong Kong is a local non-profit organization with the mission of improving the educational trajectories of underprivileged students by providing them with tuition-free quality English language education and life skills development opportunities. Primarily, our program involves secondary school and university students from around the world and Hong Kong, ages 16 to 22, to come together for 7 weeks to provide a unique experience for our younger Summerbridge students, ages 13 to 15. We aim to expose our students to a diverse range of subjects and cultures in a positive and supportive English-immersion environment. Through this, our students are able to build life skills such as confidence, teamwork and leadership while also developing an understanding of empathy, curiosity and emotional well-being. The two videos below will hopefully give you an idea of the Summerbridge environment, its participants and the services we provide.

Introduction to Summerbridge (video): click here
The Student Teacher Experience (video): click here

Our student teachers are a diverse group, bringing with them a variety of backgrounds and experiences. This creates a diverse environment and allows our student teachers to make a profound impact on the students they teach. Not only do student teachers experience the joys of teaching, they also further develop skills and insights in leadership, project organization, and community service. Previous teaching experience is not required. The 2021 Summer Program runs from June 19 to August 13, 2021, and applications to become a Student Teacher can be found here. If your school schedule conflicts we would be happy to discuss possible arrangements with you.

The deadline to apply is February 26, 2021.

More information about our organization and program can be found on our website at summerbridge.org.hk. We hope to see you this summer!
