Dear HKIS,
There have been some challenges with this year’s ExCo elections.
Two candidates have been disqualified and removed from the ballot on the grounds of unfair campaigning. This decision was made by Senate ExCo, in consultation with our faculty advisors and administration. We all felt that this was the best way to keep our elections fair and open.
We are also aware that there were accusations of plagiarism in one of the candidate speeches. We have brought these concerns to the administration and the situation has been resolved. All candidates currently on the ballot have been approved and are eligible to run.
Ballots will open Thursday, April 19, between 7:45AM and 4:00PM. Results will be released next week, Monday morning. Because it’s been awhile since the speeches, we’d remind you that you can still rewatch the videos of speeches here.
This has been a lengthy election, and we appreciate your patience. Now that the circumstances have been clarified, we hope we can move forward with open and fair elections.
Best wishes,
ExCo ’17-’18

SENATE UPDATE:
1. Spirit Points Scanning System:
Senate is bringing you a new way to earn spirit points and win Spirit Week! While there's always a lot of spirit on campus during spirit week, we also think spirit should be abundant year round. We are happy to announce that this year, spirit points will be rewarded to people who turn up at sports games. The SDLT has graciously provided us with scanners that can read our school ID cards, and we'll have Senators at every game ready to scan people in and out to track points. Every single person that turns up to these games will earn one spirit point for their class. This will start next week Friday, on September 22 for China Cup volleyball in the gym. Let the battle begin!
2. Change for Change
We will be resuming the service initiative Change for Change. The goal of this initiative is for the school, as a community, to donate to different causes throughout the year and do our part in helping the world. The first cause we would like to help is Hurricane Harvey; multiple homes were destroyed and many people got injured. There will be big water bottles/jugs around the campus where you can donate, so keep an eye out for them. Together, we can truly make a change, and it can start with the change in our pockets.

Our apologies to Sonia Tam, the Class of 2020 candidate for Secretary. The camera ran out of battery mid-speech, so the speech wasn't recorded. Freshmen, ask your friends what it was like if you missed it!
