HKU Law Special Screening (with post-screening sharing):Sunny Side of the Street《白日青春》

April 27, 2023 (Thursday)
7:00pm – 9:45pm
Golden Scene Cinema, Kennedy Town

Alumni and colleagues of the Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong are invited to support the Special Screening of the film “Sunny Side of the Street《白日青春》.” Proceeds will support the Faculty's Refugee Law Clinic and other HKU Law experiential learning initiatives.

Since January 2010, HKU Faculty of Law has been supporting refugees by providing legal assistance to asylum seekers in Hong Kong through the “Refugee & Human Trafficking Clinic”. The Clinic serves unmet legal needs in the community by providing law students with opportunities to use their legal skills and knowledge in a real-life setting, addressing real problems faced by vulnerable individuals. The Clinic encourages students to serve the greater Hong Kong community; see legal practice as socially situated; reflect on the nature of the lawyer’s relationship with a client including issues of power and trust; and evaluate ethical conduct in a practical context. Students have the opportunity to recognise challenges, creatively identify options and solutions, execute their own judgment, and understand the impacts of their decisions.

The film tells the story of a Hong Kong-born Pakistani refugee boy who forms an unexpected bond with a local taxi driver. The film took home the Best New Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Leading Actor (Anthony Wong) at the Golden Horse Awards 2022.

Master of Laws (LL.M) in Human Rights at The University of Hong Kong – Application Deadline is now 19 April 2021! (Full scholarships available)

The Master of Laws (LL.M) in Human Rights Programme, established in 1999, focuses on human rights issues of global concern, including in the Asia-Pacific Region, and aims to foster an active learning environment. The diverse range of courses enables students to 1) understand the international human rights legal framework, 2) reflect on key human rights challenges from global, regional, and domestic perspectives, and 3) apply their knowledge to advocate for real change.

The curriculum covers human rights law but draws on other disciplines such as history, politics, philosophy, and sociology to ensure the law is understood in context. It also has a clinical Capstone option so students can apply what they learn in practice. Teachers include renowned experts in the field from around the world including eminent scholars, judges, United Nations human rights mandate holders, and heads of non-governmental organisations. The Programme attracts students from a broad range of backgrounds including lawyers, judges, the staff of national human rights institutions and NGOs, journalists, doctors, scholars, government officials, and many others.
