What does operational excellence look like inside one of the world’s most iconic retail brands? Our recent Company Visit and Recruitment Talk at 𝐈𝐊𝐄𝐀 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐠 offered students an immersive perspective on how purpose, people, and operations come together to shape one of the world’s most recognisable retail brands.

The visit began with a private store tour led by Store Manager 𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐲 𝐒𝐨 and her team, who shared how IKEA’s store operations and layout are thoughtfully designed around its vision of “𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞.” The session also highlighted how sustainability considerations are integrated into daily operations.

Beyond operations, the session offered a closer look into the people behind the brand. 𝐀𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧, Head of People & Culture for Hong Kong & Macau, and 𝐂𝐫𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐮𝐧𝐠, Talent Acquisition Leader, offered an inside look into IKEA’s unique workplace culture, emphasizing that a job at IKEA is much more than just a role — it is a career journey with diverse pathways where individuals are empowered to grow and explore opportunities across functions and markets.

The session was further enriched by 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐞, Acting Chief Executive Officer of DFI IKEA, who shared deeper insights into IKEA’s business strategies, leadership and the evolving retail landscape through an engaging Q&A with students.

What does it take to carry wealth across generations?

For many families, wealth is not just financial. It reflects values, decisions, and long-term responsibility. He elaborated how family offices safeguard not only financial assets, but also preserve intangible elements such as family values and long-term legacy, ensuring continuity across generations.

Building on this foundational, 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐰 𝐖𝐨𝐧𝐠, 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐀𝐱𝐢𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝, deepened the discussion with compelling real-world case studies. He illustrated how the firm goes far beyond traditional insurance solutions, integrating professional legal advisory, tax planning and holistic legacy planning to address complex and evolving needs.

Shifting to career and market perspectives, 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐘𝐢𝐧, 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭, shared his authentic personal career journey navigating the family office space, alongside observations on the sector’s rapid growth and emerging opportunities.

At a recent HKUST MBA fireside chat, students joined an open conversation with 𝐌𝐫. 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧, 𝐂𝐄𝐎 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐈𝐀 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐇𝐊 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝, as he reflected on his journey from CIO to CEO and the realities of leading at the C-suite level.

Thomas offered candid perspectives on corporate finance, internal pressure, and what textbooks often get wrong, drawing from decades in investment management and banking. Through real-life cases, students gained a clearer view of the trade-offs and decisions that define leadership in practice.

A key takeaway that resonated was the importance of self-management. Beyond technical expertise, Thomas emphasised maintaining balance, resilience, and clarity over the long term. As he put it, “𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲.” The discussion moved beyond formulas to mindset, offering an honest look at how to navigate the gap between classroom learning and the realities of the C-suite.

The HKUST Full-Time MBA cohort that brings together perspectives from across the world, it’s often the simplest moments that bring everyone closer. This time, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐁𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛, a student club, gathered for a visit to the 𝐂𝐨𝐜𝐚-𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐚 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 — a lighthearted pause from the usual rhythm of classes and work.

As they progressed through the exhibits, conversations naturally evolved—from discussions on branding and culture to reflections on everyday life in Hong Kong. For many of our international students, it was also a chance to experience a different side of the city, through a globally familiar yet locally rooted story.

What made the day special wasn’t just the museum itself, but the people involved. Moments of shared discovery — laughing over costumes, exploring together, and of course, a bit of Coca-Cola tasting — added up to something more meaningful and memorable.

Our HKUST MBA students recently visited 𝐁𝐘𝐃 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 in Shenzhen to see how technology, leadership, and long-term vision come together in practice across operations, innovation, and social responsibility.

The visit traced the Fortune 500 company’s evolution from a battery manufacturer to a leader in electric vehicles and renewable energy. Students saw 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. Inside the labs, the 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 showcase, including a live stress test, made safety engineering tangible and highlighted how technical ambition is grounded in disciplined ex*****on.

Vehicle walkthroughs illustrated 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝. From user-focused features to large-scale production considerations, BYD’s patented technologies were presented as systems designed to perform reliably in the real world. A full wall of patents reflected sustained commitment rather than one-off breakthroughs.

Sustainability emerged as a core operating principle. From developing 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐬𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 to address urban transport challenges to pivoting production during COVID to manufacture masks in support of public health, BYD showed how social responsibilities are integrated into decision-making.

Through exchange sessions, students gained insight into how leadership aligns technology, people, and purpose, connecting strategy with ex*****on at scale. For a program committed to building leaders of the future, visits like this offer invaluable exposure to organizations that have 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠‑𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭.

That conversation served as a reflective thread, tying together the brand history, operation model, the driving experience, and its vision for the future — a vision of growing alongside its customers, learning together at every turn.

Despite his seniority, Ricky became 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐠𝐚𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧‑𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠. “𝐼 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑡𝑒𝑐ℎ𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦,” he recalls, “𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑐𝑢𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑚𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠, 𝑚𝑦 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑠𝑛’𝑡 𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ.”

Drawn by its world‑class faculty and a diverse, close‑knit cohort, Ricky found a learning environment that challenged how he thought, not just what he knew. The shift didn’t happen overnight, but the MBA accelerated it, reshaping how he approached problems from a broader business and leadership lens.

Equally impactful was the community. Beyond group assignments, teammates offered candid advice during key career moments, supporting his transition from technology consulting into a corporate role and helping him navigate that shift with greater clarity. After graduation, they have remained closely connected as friends across Hong Kong, and those relationships continue to shape his work today.
