Was great to catch up with a long time friend Mike Halkes to laugh, share good memories and workout together 💪

One of Mike’s past memories we were discussing were not easy for him to talk about...

Mike was unfortunate and was really sick in 2014. He experienced a near death incident where he was fully paralysed with a disease called: Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM)

How did this happen? It just did.... 🤷🏻‍♂️

This really messed him up and he was hospitalised in ICU for 2 weeks in critical condition. We were all worried sick...we all had no idea what was going on.

Thankfully 🙏 he came out of hospital and was alive but had to undergo 6 months of rehabilitation in the uk 🇬🇧 to learn how to walk and write ✍️ again. He loved playing the guitar and he tells me he may never ever be able to play again... I believe he will !💪💪💪

Years of rehabilitation, slow progressive exercises and hard work have helped him to regain his general overall body strength. The right side of his body still needs more time and work but I’m sure he will get there! 😃💪

COVID-19 has had a serious impact on the economy worldwide effecting many people in many industries.

As we all know, the aviation industry has taken a huge hit with international flights to many destinations cancelled or suspended.

I personally know a lot of people in the airline industry who love their jobs and can’t wait to fly again the way they used to!

Good to catch up with a good mate of mine Jason Samuel. He’s a pilot first officer and is using his time now to invest in his health/fitness/well being while keeping positive all the way 😃💪 keep up the good spirit mate 😊

From Aug - Nov 2020, I shed a whopping 14kgs (31lbs) through making various changes to my lifestyle and diet.

Coupled with a well-rounded workout routine involving strength training and cardiovascular exercises, I am now in the best shape of my life (at the age of 41)!

The most impressive thing? I did all of this without going to the gym once - utilising open space and one’s own body weight for resistance.

From August 2020 - November 2020 I managed to shed 14kgs (31lbs) by making lifestyle changes with my diet and incorporating a well rounded workout routine involving strength training and cardiovascular exercises.

All my workouts during this 4 month period were without using the gym.

1st November 2020- Hi everyone! Here is a sample workout to give you an idea what I had been doing up to this point in time.

My weight was down to a fit 87kgs and felt a plateau with my fitness so was increasing workout intensity and resistance. Also, I was giving myself less rest between sets to keep my heart rate up.

This was also my 75th day without a sip of alcohol 😃

If your serious about really losing weight and getting in shape, you need to be disciplined, committed and work really hard! Cut the bad stuff , keep the good stuff 😌 you’ll feel and look better.

Trust me on this! 🥳

October 22nd 2020 - 65 days off the booze! Shed a further 2kgs since 5th October to get under 90kgs- a huge milestone for me. 89kgs sounds and looks much better than 90kgs+! Set goals, set goals!

Here are some basic warmups and stretches that should be done pre workout and post workout to avoid injuries and get your blood pumping!

5th October 2020 - From 24th September to 5th October I noticed that this period of time was where I had the most significant drop in my weight.

Dropping 5kgs in just under these 2 weeks gave me a huge sense of satisfaction and achievement. I was confident that my exercises were effective.

I’m still wondering how this significant drop happened and what could of been a major contributor to such a result? but I’m pretty sure of the reason - This was the 48th day where I abstained from alcohol and I believe that my body really started to enjoy burning up stored fats as apposed to empty calories.

I was happy and encouraged to see that my body weight only training program using only exercise gloves, exercise mat and resistance bands with odd days running really brought out results.

And of course, with a lot of weight coming off, I could start to see my jawline and cheekbones again 😂

24th September 2020 - I had shed 4kgs since August 8th to get down to 96kgs and it was also my 37th day off the booze so I felt like things were moving in the right direction.

As the weight started to come off, I noticed steady improvements in coordination, stamina and speed during my resistance/strength training body weight only workouts.

Although restrictions started to relax with gyms reopening- I decided to persist with my own vigorous weight-loss and strength/conditioning program with exercises performed at home and out at the park using minimal equipment.

24th September 2020 - approximately 1 million people around the world died of Covid-19. Reading today’s statistics, the number of deaths worldwide is approaching 2 million people which is scary as the pandemic rages on.

Apart from the elderly, those who are in the highest risk categories are people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and the obese.

It’s important to make sensible lifestyle choices and to exercise and keep in shape.

August 31st 2020 - I had dropped 2kgs in just under 2 weeks to get to 98kgs. It was also my 13th day of no alcohol which was not easy and required a lot of self discipline.

At this point I notice positive outcomes such as improved uninterrupted sleep, more physical energy and a more controllable appetite.

Workout variety helps to maintain interest and motivation.

The people in my surroundings taking part in different exercise activities sparked a curiosity and led me to explore online Thai dance aerobics and other forms of exercise. I decided to give it a try and found it actually quite fun, interesting and beneficial.

Running at this stage was demanding on my knees because of all the weight I was carrying at the time so the aerobics was a great supplement/ alternative for cardio and light muscle workouts. Kids enjoyed it too because they like to mimic movements.

Thank you to the “Filipino Maffia” for opening my eyes and showing me something different. There are many ways to exercise. No doubt, the online workouts are becoming more and more popular- especially during 2020.

I miss the swimming pool but will need to keep moving on dry-land for now.

1st JULY 2020 when there were swimming pools!

With one of my favorite students - Justus Quinlan aka “BBQ” swimming in the Splash n Dash.

He loves water and always asks me “Daddy, when can we go swimming again?” It’s a hard question for me to answer and even more difficult to explain what’s going on in today’s world to a 3 year old.

In the meantime, it looks like we will have to come up with something else to keep him moving, healthy and strong 💪
