ANALYZE GRAPHIC TEXTS BETTER FOR IB

While the connections between poetry and graphic arts like photography and even comics may not seem obvious, they’re real: both fascinating and exciting to discover. Look at the beautiful symmetry of this photo by Henri Cartier-Bresson and see how its power and precision adds to its portrayal of children traumatized by war.

The link between creating vivid images with words and with photographs and cartoons images is in SEEING, and I can help you see and make sense of both the poetry of images, and the images of poetry, then explain them better to your teachers, and to yourself.

Who I am:

I am a British teacher of English Language and Literature, living and working in Hong Kong since 2001 after teaching in Japan for over 10 years. From 2001until January 2024 I was a senior tutor at AMG Ltd. in Language and Literature for students aged 10-18.

What I Teach:

I teach UKISET, IDAT, ISEB 11+ and 13+, SSAT, (I)GCSE, HKDSE, IB, SAT, NAPLAN, IELTS, LSAT and other Australian and Canadian curricula, and have extensive experience getting students into top Hong Kong, British and private schools elsewhere, including Benenden, Eton, Harrow, Wi******er and Wycombe Abbey, as well as universities in Britain, the US, Canada and Australia. I have helped a generation of young Hong Kongers reach the schools of their dreams through drafting clear, accurate personal statements.

Who I Teach:

I teach children from aged 10-18 English as a First, Second and Language, as well English Literature.

How I Teach:

You can only give what you actually have, and I endeavour try to pass on my deep love of stories, both real and fictional, as well as English language poetry and drama. Clear writing is essential, and I specialize in teaching how to structure more elegant, coherent essays and stories. All good writing comes from reading good role models; after showing students good writing, I challenge them to produce it themselves.

I develop students’ creative writing through guided reading and clear models. For older students, the focus is on understanding literary techniques, so as to use them in their own writing.

Interview Practise:

I prepare students for in-person and online interviews at international schools in Hong Kong and schools in the UK elsewhere, building up learners’ self-confidence and interpersonal skills so they show their best selves to any interviewer.
