We are launching a Gap Year program for the year 2018-2019
For students who are struggling with their study and are considering quitting university, taking a year out where they can reflect and relate to the world from a different perspective may help them re-think about their next steps and re-energised.

A Bigger Picture in Career Discovery
by Grace Lee, Education Consultant of Sailing Academy Hong Kong
We can roughly and generally classify jobs into five main categories:
1. Business: You get paid for helping your company make a profit. You may set up a company to employ others to make a profit for you one day. In the recent decades, a new form of business called social enterprise takes care of social benefits, not just: Money, money, money.
2. NGO: Usually, you do not get paid well. Your greatest satisfaction comes from helping people or the community.
3. Government: Your income and benefits are quite good and relatively stable. It is a huge system that requires you to fit in and act according to orders. You offer Government services to the p***c and will be respected as civil servants.
4. Professional: You have professional qualifications such as lawyers, doctors, engineers, teachers etc. These professionals may work for business, NGO or Government.
5. Any other jobs
New jobs are coming up. Old jobs are disappearing. Many of them are self-employed.
Which categories of jobs are you interested in? Which categories of jobs may be more suitable for you?
You are guided to explore these options during your gap year.

Self and career discovery through a year of boating and sailing activities in Hong Kong
By Grace Lee, Education Consultant of Sailing Academy HK
Every time university graduates told me that they wanted to give up their degree in law, accounting or anything they have committed seriously to for 3 or 4 years, I would tell them that if I were their parents and if I had sponsored them, I would be upset.
I do feel bad for them wasting so much time, money and energy. At the same time, I am glad for them not wasting the rest of their life in something they do not enjoy as a career.
How many students have got into the career they have specialised in university?
Are there better ways to help young people explore about themselves and the opportunities available before making wise choices in study and career at the age of 17 or 18?
As a gap year Project Director in the last two decades, I have decided to support my sailing coach to offer this unique opportunity to Hong Kong students. Students from any other countries are also welcome to join as this program will be facilitated by a native English speaking tutor.
Visit this website www.sailingacademyhk.org to learn more about this opportunity and share this information with more young people who are considering getting into the the univeristy or during or after their bachelor degree.
Students before, during and after VTC or other post secondary institutions are also welcome!
