This summer, we were delighted to welcome aspiring city-builders to Smart City Explorers, a five-day programme developed with HKUโ€™s Department of Real Estate and Construction. Together, students explored how surveying, technology, sustainability, and people-centred design can shape the cities of tomorrow. ๐Ÿ™๏ธ

Students explored the role of surveyors in land development and experienced emerging tools such as VR/AR, LiDAR, and robotics.

Through an interactive building game, students discovered the planning, coordination, and decision-making behind successful construction projects, followed by valuable conversations with HKU alumni and student helpers.

From ArcGIS mapping to model-building challenges, students learned how spatial data and building technologies support smarter, more sustainable urban development.

Students explored real estate finance and visited GO PARK Sai Sha, gaining first-hand insight into the connections between development, community, and the built environment.

The โ€œAI Adventures: When AI Meets Games with Tencentโ€ programme, co-hosted by HKU Academy for the Talented, LIGHTSPEED STUDIOS, and Tencent WeTech Academy, has come to a close.

The week ended with a student showcase โ€” participants turned five days of AI learning into actual game-world proposals and presented them on stage. The growth from Day 1 to that final presentation was real, and it showed.

This programme gave students more than skills โ€” it gave them confidence. And this yearโ€™s traditional Chinese cultural aesthetics woven into the AI tools sparked something worth noting: that technology can be a way to understand and express culture, not just replace it.

Thank you to every student who brought your perspective into this room. The โ€œAI Adventures: When AI Meets Games with Tencentโ€ programme, co-created by HKU Academy for the Talented, LIGHTSPEED STUDIOS, and Tencent WeTech Academy, officially launched today!

๐——๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐Ÿญ opened with the welcome address of Dr. Elizabeth Ho, Assistant Dean (Student Experience) and Director of MAES (Literature), School of English, Faculty of Arts, HKU, followed by the session of Dr. Kal Ng (Professional Practitioner) from the Faculty of Arts, HKU, on historical game-world design โ€” a reminder, right from the start, that this programme isnโ€™t just about picking up AI tools. Itโ€™s about learning how to build worlds with them. Students from different parts of the world joined the room today, and the conversations on Day 1 were already full of unexpected energy.
