祝新華教授獲新加坡教育部長頒發學術顧問委任狀 語言科學及技術學系師生於國際研討會展示研究成果

2026年9月，人文學院語言科學及技術學系師生受邀參加由新加坡華文教研中心主辦的「第八屆華文作為第二語言之教與學國際研討會」。與會期間，祝教授獲委任為新加坡華文教研中心學術顧問，並於開幕典禮上接受由新加坡教育部長李智陞先生在新加坡華文教研中心院長符傳豐博士陪同下頒發的委任狀。

是次委任表彰祝教授多年來在中文課程與評估研究領域的卓越貢獻，以及其與新加坡華文教育界的緊密合作關係。研討會期間，祝教授發表主題演講，介紹其團隊在人工智能輔助語文教育方面的最新研究成果，並就如何賦能語言政策調整、課程重塑及教學法創新提出兼具前瞻性與實踐性的專業建議。

語言科學及技術學系師生亦積極參與研討會學術交流活動。梁慧敏教授、柯思慧教授、博士後研究員劉亞萍博士，以及博士候選人肖妤及徐心童，分別透過特邀專場及學術報告展示其最新研究成果，內容涵蓋中文教學、多語情境、讀寫能力發展及多模態閱讀等議題。

是次新加坡之行展示了學院及學系在中文教育與評估研究領域的積累，並進一步拓展亞太地區的學術交流網路。

Prof. Zhu Xinhua Receives Academic Advisor Appointment from Singapore's Minister for Education as LST Faculty and Students Showcase Research at the 8th International Conference on TLCSL 👏✨

During the 8th International Conference on Teaching and Learning of Chinese as a Second Language (TLCSL) held in September, Prof. Zhu Xinhua, Professor from the Department of Language Science and Technology (LST), was appointed Academic Advisor to the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL). The appointment was conferred by Singapore's Minister for Education, Mr Desmond Lee, accompanied by Dr Foo Suan Fong, Executive Director of SCCL, at the Conference’s opening ceremony.

The appointment recognises Prof. Zhu’s longstanding contributions to Chinese language curriculum and assessment research, as well as his close collaboration with Singapore’s Chinese language education community.

At the Conference, Prof. Zhu delivered a keynote address presenting his team’s latest research on AI-enabled language education and exploring strategies for enhancing writing feedback, curriculum innovation and teacher professional learning in AI-supported environments.💡

LST members including Prof. Leung Wai Mun, Prof. Ke Sihui, Postdoctoral Fellow Dr Liu Yaping and PhD candidates Xiao Yu and Xu Xintong also showcased their latest research through invited symposia and presentations.📚

This visit highlighted the Faculty's and Department's research strengths in Chinese language education and assessment while further expanding scholarly exchange and collaboration across the Asia-Pacific region. 🌏🤝

New Spanish Teacher Joins ENGL

We are thrilled to announce that Iratxe Rico Orue has joined the Department of English and Communication as our new Spanish Teacher. Iratxe comes to us via the Spanish government's MAEC (Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs) programme, which facilitates the teaching of Spanish at universities abroad. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Spanish Consulate in Hong Kong for their vital assistance in making this appointment possible.

Iratxe brings a diverse academic background to PolyU, holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Hispanic Philology from UPV/EHU, alongside two Master’s degrees—one in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language from the University of Salamanca, and another in Teacher Training for Secondary Education (specialising in Spanish, Latin, and Greek) from the University of Zaragoza. Her teaching philosophy is grounded in applied linguistics and language acquisition, with a passion for methodologies that make learning both effective and engaging.

She has taught Spanish to international students at the University of Salamanca, delivered Spanish and Literature classes from Kindergarten through Grade 12 in Suzhou, China, and instructed Secondary and Baccalaureate students in Spain’s Basque Country. She also collaborated with the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council to teach Spanish to immigrant and foreigner communities of all ages.

As Iratxe herself puts it: "My goal at PolyU is to provide students with a new lens through which to see the world in Spanish. I want them to analyze, enjoy, and experience the language so that it becomes a dynamic, living tool for communication."

We are confident that her expertise, global outlook, and innovative spirit will greatly enrich our students' learning journey. Welcome, Iratxe!

【Hong Kong Linguistics Olympiad Training Programme: Applications Now Open】

The Faculty of Humanities at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is pleased to invite local secondary school students to join the Hong Kong Linguistics Olympiad (HKLO) Training Programme! 📚 The programme introduces students to the fascinating world of linguistics while preparing them for the HKLO competition.

Through linguistic puzzles, participants will develop logical reasoning, problem-solving, decoding, observation and analytical skills. No prior knowledge of linguistics, particular languages or second languages is required. Students will also gain a deeper understanding of linguistic diversity by working with language data from around the world.💡

The HKLO is an accredited competition through which outstanding participants may advance to the Asia-Pacific Linguistics Olympiad (APLO). Top achievers at APLO may also have the opportunity to qualify for the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL).

🔍 Programme details:
✔️ 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐞: Every Sunday, starting from 27 September to 13 December 2026 (tentatively)
✔️ 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞: 2:00pm – 5:00pm
✔️ 𝐍𝐨. 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 12 In-person sessions, each lasting three hours

由四名香港中學學生組成的香港語言學奧林匹克（HKLO）代表隊，於2026年7月27日至8月1 日遠赴羅馬尼亞參與第23屆國際語言學奧林匹克 (IOL 2026)。代表隊表現優秀，取得驕人的成績。

面對來自世界各地出色的年輕語言學人才，HKLO代表隊勇奪兩面銀牌 (Maxwell JI and Theo LOMONE)、一面銅牌 (Ricky LEUNG)、一張榮譽獎狀 (Jayden KONG)及一面團體賽銀牌，充分顯現出他們在國際舞台上的實力。第23屆國際語言學奧林匹克的比賽結果可於以下網址查閱：

香港語言學奧林匹克（HKLO）由香港理工大學人文學院與香港語言學奧林匹克委員會合作舉辦。IOL是專為中學生而設，十二項國際科學奧林匹克競賽之一。參賽者需運用邏輯思維、解難能力及創意來破解複雜的語言謎題。

HKLO Team Shines at the 23rd International Linguistics Olympiad with 5 Awards

Our Hong Kong Linguistics Olympiad (HKLO) Team, comprising four local secondary school students, achieved an outstanding result at the 23rd International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL), held in Bucharest, Romania, from 27 July to 1 August 2026.

Competing against some of the world’s most talented young linguists, the Team brought home two Silver Medals (Maxwell JI and Theo LOMONE), one Bronze Medal (Ricky LEUNG), one Honourable Mention (Jayden KONG), and a Silver Medal in the Team Contest – affirming their exceptional capabilities on the global stage.

The Hong Kong Linguistics Olympiad (HKLO) is organised by the Faculty of Humanities at PolyU, in collaboration with the HKLO Committee. The IOL is one of the twelve international science Olympiads designed for secondary school students, challenging participants to solve complex linguistic puzzles using logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity.

人文學院參與「2026理大暑期學院」

人文學院參與了由理大招生及獎學金事務處主辦的「2026理大暑期學院」。為期兩週的課程吸引了來自世界各地的優秀學生參加。

透過學院體驗活動，參加者探索人文學院的主要學術範疇，包括語言科學及技術、英語與傳意，以及中國歷史及文化，深入了解學院在教學與研究方面的優勢。學生也參觀了政府檔案處，親自接觸檔案研究和歷史文獻保存工作，進一步豐富學習體驗。

此外，學院也開設了「語言科學導論」，讓學生體驗理大的學習模式。
人文學院衷心感謝所有參與的學生，並歡迎他們加入學院大家庭。

FH Participates in PolyU Summer Institute 2026

The Faculty of Humanities (FH) took part in the PolyU Summer Institute 2026, organised by the Student Admissions and Scholarships Office (SASO). The two-week programme attracted talented students from around the world.

Through the attachment programme, participants explored FH's key academic areas—including language science and technology, English and communication, and Chinese history and culture, and gained valuable insights into the Faculty's teaching and research strengths. Their experience was further enriched by a visit to the Hong Kong Public Records Office, where students engaged in hands-on activities related to archival research and the preservation of historical documents.

In addition, FH offered the subject Introduction to Language Science, providing students with an authentic taste of learning at PolyU.

The Faculty extends its sincere gratitude to all participating students and looks forward to welcoming many of them back to the FH community in the future.

🤖🗣️ 𝐀𝐈-𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 🤖 🗣️

認知障礙（cognitive impairment, CI）在長者中相當常見。及早介入可協助延緩病情惡化，避免發展成輕度認知障礙（mild cognitive impairment, MCI）甚至阿茲海默症。

理大語言科學及技術學系暨數據科學及人工智能學系暫任系主任（人工智能及人文學科）兼神經科學及人工智能講座教授梁化樓與其研究團隊，展示AI語音分析如何可支援更實用且具包容性的認知篩查。該研究團隊的認知篩查系統，於「INTERSPEECH 2024 TAUKADIAL Challenge」挑戰賽中，在「簡短智能測驗（Mini Mental State Examination, MMSE）認知分數預測」項目奪得第一名，及「輕度認知障礙分類」項目獲第二名。

該系統將語音視為數碼生物標記（digital biomarker），標誌著認知障礙診斷領域的重大突破。

Cognitive impairment (CI) is common among older adults. Early intervention can help delay progression to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease.

Prof. Hualou LIANG, Interim Head (Artificial Intelligence and the Humanities) and Chair Professor of Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence of the Department of Language Science and Technology and the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at PolyU, and his research team show how AI-based speech analysis may support more practical and inclusive cognitive screening. The research team’s cognitive screening system secured first place in Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) cognitive score prediction and second in MCI classification at the INTERSPEECH 2024 TAUKADIAL Challenge.

The system uses speech as a digital biomarker, marking a significant advance in CI diagnosis.
