認知障礙（cognitive impairment, CI）在長者中相當常見。及早介入可協助延緩病情惡化，避免發展成輕度認知障礙（mild cognitive impairment, MCI）甚至阿茲海默症。

理大語言科學及技術學系暨數據科學及人工智能學系暫任系主任（人工智能及人文學科）兼神經科學及人工智能講座教授梁化樓與其研究團隊，展示AI語音分析如何可支援更實用且具包容性的認知篩查。該研究團隊的認知篩查系統，於「INTERSPEECH 2024 TAUKADIAL Challenge」挑戰賽中，在「簡短智能測驗（Mini Mental State Examination, MMSE）認知分數預測」項目奪得第一名，及「輕度認知障礙分類」項目獲第二名。

該系統將語音視為數碼生物標記（digital biomarker），標誌著認知障礙診斷領域的重大突破。

Cognitive impairment (CI) is common among older adults. Early intervention can help delay progression to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease.

Prof. Hualou LIANG, Interim Head (Artificial Intelligence and the Humanities) and Chair Professor of Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence of the Department of Language Science and Technology and the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at PolyU, and his research team show how AI-based speech analysis may support more practical and inclusive cognitive screening. The research team’s cognitive screening system secured first place in Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) cognitive score prediction and second in MCI classification at the INTERSPEECH 2024 TAUKADIAL Challenge.

The system uses speech as a digital biomarker, marking a significant advance in CI diagnosis.

【第四屆人文學院三分鐘論文比賽 語言科學及技術學系博士生奪冠】

第四屆人文學院三分鐘論文（3MT®）比賽於2026年6月16日圓滿舉行。比賽要求學院的哲學博士生於三分鍾內以淺白、非學術語言向觀眾闡述其研究論文的重點，強調清晰、簡潔和有效的溝通。是次比賽得獎名單如下：

亞軍：譚可欣 (英文及傳意學系)

三分鐘論文比賽起源於澳洲昆士蘭大學，旨在通過比賽鼓勵研究生培養他們與公眾溝通研究成果的技巧。本屆冠軍石紫晴同學將代表學院參加於7月6日舉辦的「理大三分鐘論文比賽」，祝願石同學在賽事中再創佳績。

【LST Student Triumphs in the 4th FH Three Minute Thesis Competition】

The Faculty hosted its 4th Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition on 16 June 2026, showcasing the research prowess of our PhD students. The event challenged participants to present their complex research projects in just three minutes, emphasising clarity, conciseness, and effective communication. The winners are as follows:

Champion: SHEK Tsz Ching Phoebe (LST)
First Runner-up: TAN Kexin (ENGL)
Second Runner-up: WANG Yijun (ENGL)

The 3MT Competition, developed by the University of Queensland, is an academic competition that challenges postgraduate students to present their research in just three minutes, using one slide. The competition aims to develop students’ communication and presentation skills, particularly in the area of research communication.

The Faculty Champion will advance to represent the Faculty at the University’s 3MT Competition to be held on 6 July. We wish her every success in the upcoming event.

Three specific areas of achievement would be given recognition, including:

Alumni who are aged at/under 40 in the award selection year would be eligible for the Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

🌟𝙀𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮
The nominated 𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚 must be a graduate of the Faculty of Humanities* who has successfully completed a full-time or part-time programme offered by PolyU (or its forerunners: Hong Kong Government Trade School, Hong Kong Technical College, and Hong Kong Polytechnic) which led to academic award accredited by the respective Institution.

The Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award has three levels, namely Department, Faculty and University levels. The nominees for the Faculty Award should be recipients of the Departmental Alumni Award or graduates of the Faculty level programmes, such as Doctor of Applied Language Sciences and BA(Hons) in Language Studies for the Professions.

The 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙧 can be PolyU graduates, Honorary Graduates, University Fellows, PolyU staff, current PolyU Council and Court members and current Advisory Committee members. There is no limit to the number of nominations to be submitted by each proposer. However, the proposer cannot be the candidate himself/ herself.

Faculty awardees of the current year may be nominated for the Outstanding Alumni Award at the University level.

FH reserves the right to make a final decision on any individual's eligibility for the Award. In case of any dispute/disagreement, the decision of FH shall be final.

【2026語言科學國際研討會】

由香港理工大學人文學院，聯同英文及傳意學系、語言科學及技術學系舉辦的「2026語言科學國際研討會：趙元任學術思想與跨學科研究」於2026年5月8日至9日圓滿舉行。是次研討會吸引了來自11個國家及地區超過140名學者與研究人員參與，包括澳洲、中國內地、香港、日本、澳門、尼日利亞、新加坡、南韓、英國及美國，充分體現研討會的全球影響力以及語言科學的重要性。

研討會匯聚了國際學術界的學者與研究人員，並邀得四位著名學者擔任主題演講嘉賓，（按姓氏英文字母順序排列）：丁鼐教授（浙江大學）、Roberto Filippi教授（倫敦大學學院教育學院）、堀川友哉博士（NTT科学基礎研究所）及Judith F. Kroll教授（加州大學爾灣分校）。會議設有14節小組口頭匯報及海報發表，涵蓋多個語言科學領域的廣泛議題。

為向趙元任教授的學術傳承致敬，研討會安排了兩場得獎者講座，由2026年度趙元任語言科學獎得獎者主講，分別是Brian MacWhinney教授（終身成就獎）及Charles B. Chang教授（傑出青年學者獎）。

為進一步紀念趙元任教授的貢獻，以及延續2024年研討會所開啟的學術交流，最新出版的論文集《Interdisciplinary Research in Language Science: Yuen Ren Chao’s Legacy》亦於該活動上正式發佈。

研討會成功促進了跨學科對話，推動語言科學研究的發展，同時延續趙元任教授的深遠學術傳承，持續啟發未來的語言學家及語言科學研究人員。

【International Symposium on Language Science (ISLS) 2026 Concludes with Success】

The Faculty of Humanities at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), in collaboration with the Department of English and Communication and the Department of Language Science and Technology, successfully organised the International Symposium on Language Science (ISLS) 2026: Interdisciplinary Research and the Legacy of Yuen Ren Chao on 8 and 9 May 2026. The Symposium attracted over 140 participants from 11 countries and regions, including Australia, Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Nigeria, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This remarkable international turnout is a testament to the Symposium's global significance and the universal appeal of language science.

The event brought together an international community of scholars and researchers, featuring four distinguished keynote speakers (in alphabetical order of surname): Prof. Nai Ding (Zhejiang University), Prof. Roberto Filippi (UCL Institute of Education), Dr Tomoyasu Horikawa (NTT Communication Science Laboratories) and Prof. Judith F. Kroll (University of California, Irvine). The programme also included 14 parallel oral presentation sessions and a poster session, covering a wide range of topics in language science.

In tribute to the legacy of Prof. Yuen Ren Chao, the Symposium presented two Chao Prize Lectures by the 2026 Laureates: Prof. Brian MacWhinney (Lifetime Achievement Award) and Prof. Charles B. Chang (Early Career Contribution Award).

To further commemorate Prof. Yuen Ren Chao’s contributions and to continue the scholarly exchange initiated at the 2024 Symposium, the newly published volume 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦: 𝘠𝘶𝘦𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘯 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘰’𝘴 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘤𝘺 was also officially launched at the Symposium.

The Symposium successfully fostered interdisciplinary dialogue and advanced research in language science, while continuing to inspire future generations of linguists and language science researchers, carrying forward the enduring legacy of Prof. Yuen Ren Chao.

Prof. Brian MacWhinney, Theresa Heinz Professor of Cognitive Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University and Prof. Charles B. Chang, Fellow of the Psychonomic Society were bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Early Career Contribution Award respectively for their remarkable achievements in and outstanding contributions to the field of language science.

Initiated and hosted by the PolyU Faculty of Humanities (FH), the Yuen Ren Chao Prize in Language Science (the Chao Prize) is awarded on a biennial basis. Named in honour of the late Prof. Yuen Ren Chao, widely regarded as the father of modern Chinese language studies, the Chao Prize commemorates Prof. Chao’s interdisciplinary legacy and recognises scholarly excellence that advances language research and education.

【孫馨教授榮獲理大2026年度「青年創新研究者獎」】

語言科學及技術學系助理教授語言科學及技術學系助理教授孫馨教授榮獲理大2025年度「青年創新研究者獎」。🏆👏🏻 「青年創新研究者獎」旨在表揚理大35歲以下具備卓越研究實力的科研人才。獎項今年共收到來自各學院的60份申請，孫教授獲選為六位得獎者之一。

孫教授的獲獎項目將採用功能性近紅外光譜技術（fNIRS），探究中英雙語閱讀障礙兒童在語音與語素加工過程中的行為表現與神經機制。本研究希望通過這些行為及神經層面的發現，為香港乃至全球雙語兒童群體構建早期的行為與神經認知圖譜，為閱讀障礙的早期識別提供科學依據，進而啟發未來相關針對性干預措施的開發。🗣️

【Prof. Sun Xin Receives the PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award (YIRA) 2026】

Prof. Sun Xin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Language Science and Technology, has won the PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award (YIRA) 2026.🏆👏🏻

The YIRA is a prestigious university-level award that honours young faculty members who have demonstrated originality, contributed to technological advancement, and propelled transformational innovation into solutions addressing global challenges through their research.

Prof. Sun is one of the six awardees among the 60 submissions across all schools and faculties. Her winning research project is titled “Brain Basis of Dyslexia in Chinese-English Bilinguals: Phonological and Morphological Assessments Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.” It introduces a novel, evidence-based neuroimaging approach using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) to probe two underlying oral difficulties that are precursors to and associated with dyslexia, phonological and morphological processing. The objective is to characterise the neurocognitive profiles of Chinese-English bilingual children with dyslexia. In the long term, these neurobiological insights have the potential to assist early identification strategies and support the development of targeted interventions for bilingual paediatric populations in Hong Kong and globally.🗣️
