To celebrate the accomplishment of the first Master of Family Wealth Management (โ€œMFWMโ€) cohort, we are pleased to introduce our inaugural issue of โ€œLegacy: HKU MFWM Capstone Project Review.โ€ This booklet showcases excerpts from student research completed in the Master of Family Wealth Management programme at The University of Hong Kong as part of the capstone course. While each teamโ€™s original report exceeded 10,000 words, the editors of the Review created excerpts from the full reports to highlight key insights from each of the 8 student projects.

From this Review, one has a glimpse of the breadth and depth of knowledge our students touched upon during their MFWM studies. The projects span a variety of topics from investments to taxation to philanthropy and M&A of family -owned businesses. Special thanks to editors Ms Bonnie Leung & Mr Yeyuxing Chen, who streamlined the content for readability. We are proud to see the achievements of our first cohort graduates and are looking forward to celebrate more success of our students in the future.

๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ‘ฅ๐Ÿ‘ฅ๐Ÿคœ๐Ÿค› FWM 2025 New Student Induction & Teamwork Retreat
๐Ÿ•˜ 29 โ€“ 30 August 2025

We are thrilled to welcome the second cohort of students to the Master of Family Wealth Management programme! On August 29th, FWM students started their studies with a 2-day retreat, packed with activities to prepare them for the coming academic year. The offsite retreat is part of our year-long Capstone course, and included important elements around working in teams, career/life planning, and learning at HKU. Firstly, the students attended insightful mini-lectures on team management and conflict resolution and participated in engaging team-building activities, deepening their awareness of how they work in teams. Then, we were honoured to welcome three FWM alumni who returned to share valuable tips on succeeding in the programme, including effective communication and conflict resolution strategies within groups, as well as offering career insights and advice. Current year students also had a unique opportunity to connect with their instructors and learn more about the courses they will soon be attending. Lastly, the retreat initiated conversations with students on their career/life planning, encouraging them to start self-reflection on their future goals.

In summary, the FWM retreat fostered strong connections through a variety of collaborative games, exercises, and discussions designed to encourage teamwork, trust, and mutual support among the students. These activities not only boosted group cohesion but also prepared them to work effectively in diverse teams throughout their studies. We look forward to celebrating a successful academic year ahead! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

๐ŸŽ‰ Capstone Day โ€“ Master of Family Wealth Management
๐Ÿ“ 18 June 2025 | ๐Ÿ•˜ Full Day

What a memorable day! On 18 June, the first class of HKU Master of Family Wealth Management students at HKU completed their capstone projects, marking the end of a year-long, multi-disciplinary journey into family wealth management. From early in the morning to late in the afternoon, a panel of professors and industry experts listened to student teams who presented their research findings. The students received valuable feedback that they will bring forth with them as family wealth managers. FWM students who were on the internship track also joined their research peers to mark this important milestone. ๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ“Š

๐Ÿ“ธAfter the student presentations, our Programme Director, Bonnie Leung, gave a heartfelt speech, thanking all those who contributed to the success of the programmeโ€™s first year. This included not only distinguished guest speakers, industry sponsors, employers, professors, and scholars, but also administrative staff who worked tirelessly in the background. Next, Professor Zhiwu Chen and Professor Pingyang Gao presented certificates of appreciation to our valued project sponsors and internship employers, followed by photo-taking to capture these moments of success and partnership. ๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿ“ธ

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ The day concluded with a dinner to thank our industry friends and to mark the completion of the first year as one, big โ€œFWM family.โ€โœจ

๐ŸŒŸ To our distinguished guests, professors, scholars, and sponsors: Your presence made the event truly special.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to this milestone. Here's to shaping the future of family wealth management together! ๐ŸŒŸ

On May 21st, the FWM Programme hosted Ms Pauline Yeung, Founder of Knitknot Global, to deliver a lecture on โ€œCross-Cultural Elements of Family Business.โ€

Pauline convincingly demonstrated the importance of cross-cultural elements in understanding family business in different cultural contexts by using rich and detailed case studies and multi-disciplinary theoretical frameworks. It was especially gratifying that we had the honour of welcoming a number of culturally diverse audiences to our public lecture on that day.

We would like to thank everyone for joining in this enlightening lecture! We will have more talks on family wealth management in the coming weeks, stay tuned!
