Centre of Buddhist Studies, HKU

Centre of Buddhist Studies, HKU The twenty-first century is an era of amazing advances in science, technology, and communication.

After decades of economic boom, people are often under enormous stress from the shift of economic paradigm, social pressure and disturbances, issues of employment and future uncertainties. Faced with this new situation, there is an escalating interest in introspection as well as a growing need to strike a balance between the 'mind' and the 'material world'. The Buddha's teachings, promulgated over two thousand five hundred years and contained in over 13,500 volumes of scriptural text, reveal the root causes of human suffering or unhappiness, and challenge us to transform our mind. As a result, millions of people over the centuries have benefited. These teachings have stood the test of time and continue to be relevant to us in the modern time. They are indeed one of mankind’s most treasured heritage and spiritual asset. Well recognized not only by the intelligentsia of Asia but of Europe, America, and Australasia, Buddhism is viewed as an antidote for the vexed mind and an aid to the establishment of good social order. Tertiary institutes as well as civil and secular groups are keen to explore into Buddhist teachings from different angles and at different levels. In so doing, the effort to find a direction of life and refuge of mind for the modern person is enhanced. The University of Hong Kong, the oldest and leading university in Hong Kong, has long been the crossroad where East meets West. Looking towards Mainland China since her opening up, we find a new surge of religious fervour and a rich potential of talents and resources for serious Buddhist studies. Looking around the world, we find a growing global interest in Buddhist studies from many new perspectives. Placed at a strategic position, Hong Kong is able to benefit from all of these. Against such an international backdrop, the setting up of the Centre of Buddhist Studies in 2000 was a positive response to the needs of the time and the community. It ushers in a new stage in the University’s research efforts on humanities.

Lecture Abstract
Theravāda Buddhism in Sri Lanka maintains a unique and rich palm leaf manuscript culture. Historically, the Pali Tipiṭaka (Canon) and Buddhist literary texts have been preserved through continuous scribal transmission. These ancient palm leaf manuscripts function not only as sources of religious knowledge, but also as objects of veneration. Scholars have coined the concept of the “cult of the book” to describe the significance attributed to physical scriptures as sacred objects of worship in the Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna traditions. Drawing on this concept, I propose the notion of the “cult of the palm leaf manuscript” to examine palm leaf manuscript culture in Sri Lankan Theravāda Buddhism. In doing so, I highlight the unique forms of production, preservation, ritual and devotional practices, and materiality of palm leaf manuscript culture in Sri Lanka. In this talk, I will explore how ritual practices have shaped these palm leaf manuscripts as objects of veneration and merit-making.

Lecture abstract
Why do novices often feel tense, confused, or frustrated during mindful breathing? This talk introduces the ISAAA (Interoceptive Sensitivity for Attentional-Autonomic Alignment) model — a clear, neuroscience-informed framework grounded in the early steps of the Ānāpānasati Sutta. Discover the two-phase approach: first establish a metacognitive platform for passive observation of natural breathing, then apply skillful, minimal-effort modulation to achieve true attentional-autonomic alignment, enhance vagal tone, and cultivate lasting equanimity.
