Effective Altruism Hong Kong

Effective Altruism Hong Kong Effective Altruism Hong Kong is a Section 88 tax-exempt charity. Explore our website to learn about our mission and our key programmes. www.eahongkong.org

EAHK aims to be an impact multiplier by enabling Hong Kong to maximise its potential to help others. Effective Altruism tries to answer the question "With limited resources, how can we do the most good?". As part of the broader effective altruism community, Effective Altruism Hong Kong (EAHK) is a local chapter in Asia, dedicated to building a community of people who seek to continuously investigate what "do the most good" means, through applying evidence and careful reasoning. This translates into practical actions, from figuring out the most important problems to solve, effective charities to donate to, and career paths to enter to solve these problems. As a community, we engage with donors, students, philanthropists, corporates, and social impact organisations and run events such as meet-up talks, reading groups, monthly social, EA outreach, promoting effective giving and research, and more. “Thanks again for having me at the Horizon Impact Lab. I really enjoyed the session and appreciated the warm, small-group setting, which made it easy to have genuine exchanges and honest reflections.

What stood out most for me was the open, constructive debate on different impact measurement approaches globally. It was a valuable reminder not to get trapped only in my day-to-day local client context, and I left with several fresh ideas to explore. I also liked how you connected effective altruism with practical decision-making, and I’d personally be keen to go deeper into this in future sessions.

Overall, I’m really glad to see this kind of conversation happening in Hong Kong and would love to see more people exposed to a broader range of philanthropy approaches and vehicles.”

“The Horizon workshop was definitely a solid introduction to Effective Altruism if you’re interested in their core ideas. It gave me a fresh, alternative lens for thinking about how to maximize impact and how strategic cause prioritization plays out in practice. I loved the group exercises — they really challenged quite a few of my own assumptions and showed how a highly evidence-based approach can lead to some surprisingly counterintuitive results.”

Eva Luk, former philanthropic foundation partnerships director

Caring is the easy part. Choosing where it goes isn’t.

In April a group of people sat down to work out where their time and money actually go furthest. That was the Horizon Impact Lab, and we’re running it again.

One evening, a small group, and the key ideas of effective altruism alongside how to actually use them. You leave with a way to compare causes that still holds up the next morning, your own giving and career decisions pressure tested, and a room of people in Hong Kong asking the same questions.

Led by Kenneth Chan, Managing Director of EAHK, who has spent four years co-leading the organisation and a decade in education across classroom teaching and curriculum design. It’s a workshop, not a lecture, so expect to do the thinking.

How do you turn good intentions into real impact? That's the question Peter Singer has spent a career pressing, and it's the one we'll be sitting with on 21 July.

His ideas helped shape a simple, demanding habit: before you give, ask where the same dollar does the most measurable good. Come hear him in person, then stay for the conversation. Whether you're new to effective altruism or have been giving for years, there's a seat for you.
