On 15โ16 July 2026, CUHKโs Department of Translation and Centre for Cultural Studies, Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, hosted ๐๐บ๐ด๐ต๐ช๐ค๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ด ๐ช๐ฏ ๐๐ณ๐ข๐ฏ๐ด๐ญ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐๐ณ๐ข๐ฏ๐ด๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ: ๐๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐๐ฏ๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ๐ด ๐ช๐ฏ ๐๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ด๐ฆ ๐๐ถ๐ญ๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐๐ฆ๐ฅ๐ช๐ข. Co-convened by Prof. Jia Tan and Prof. Sophie Ling-chia Wei, the workshop brought together scholars for two days of lively, multidisciplinary exchange on how animals, hybrid beings, and mystical creatures move across Chinese culture, languages, histories, and media.
Four recurring themes gave the programme its distinctive shape. Speakers explored the spiritual and religious meanings of creatures as they travel among Buddhist, Daoist, and Christian traditions; tested the boundaries between the human and non-human through discussions of transformation, extinction, ecology, and interspecies relations; examined how queerness, sexuality, and gender can be reimagined through animal and mystical figures; and considered how animation, CGI, and AI-generated media are transforming familiar mythic beings while raising new questions about authorship, technology, and cultural circulation.
Across the panels, mystical creatures emerged not as relics of the past, but as dynamic figures through which to think about belief, identity, ecology, and technological change. Our sincere thanks to all speakers, chairs, participants, and supporters for making the workshop such an inspiring and productive gathering.

We were delighted to host a campus visit for students from ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐
๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ง๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ง ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐!
During the visit, Form 4โ6 students explored the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Translation through engaging interactions with our instructors, including Prof. Sophie Ling-chia Wei, Dr. Yinran Wu, and Dr. Li Li, in the order of their presentations. The sessions encouraged active participation, with students asking thoughtful questions and sharing their perspectives.
Two mini-lectures on Computer-Aided Translation and Interpreting were delivered, offering students valuable insights into human-technology collaboration, as well as how translation and interpreting skills are transferrable to a wide range of career paths.
We hope the visit inspired the students to see how Translation and Interpreting can continue to thrive in the age of AI. We look forward to welcoming them again in the near future!

On the morning of May 8, Professor James St. Andrรฉ, Chair of the Department of Translation at CUHK, was invited to deliver a lecture at Zhejiang University titled โExploring 19th-Century Chinese-English Translation History with Digital Humanities Tools: Promises and Prospects.โ
Focusing on his research on nineteenth-century Chinese-English translators, Professor St. Andrรฉ demonstrated how social network analysis and digital humanities methods can open new pathways in translation history. By integrating 63 types of dataโincluding biographical details, publication records, places of work, and institutional affiliationsโhe has developed a database of 262 translators, drawing on global library catalogues, nineteenth-century English-language periodicals, missionary biographies, and East India Company archives. The project combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to map networks, relationships, and historical trajectories within this translation community.
The lecture was followed by a lively and engaging discussion with faculty and students. We are delighted to see the impact of CUHK Translationโs research beyond Hong Kong and are grateful to our colleagues at Zhejiang University for their warm hospitality.

It's been almost a year since my first SI job on campus, and this journey is fascinating! From staff briefing sessions to college assemblies and formal meetings, these SI jobs have equipped me with practical experiences that I would never have gained in the classroom.
I've taken a few interpreting courses before, but SI in the real world could be very different. While we mostly get the presentation slides or the meeting documents, there could still be a lot of information that we need to prepare, for example some other movies by the same director in a post-screening talk. Preparation time is usually limited, particularly when the documents are confidential, but since SI interpreters work in pairs, it's always teamwork. Although it's impossible to be "fully prepared" as an interpreter, research and communication are indeed useful.
I also had a taste of "expect the unexpected" which I had heard of in lessons. We're trained to use professional equipment in SI booths, but we may not even have a booth in real life. It's also common that the speakers don't follow their scripts, but it's most important to remain professional and do our best under any circumstances, even when the speaker starts singing in Hakka.
All in all, the SI student intern experience is not only a way of putting classroom knowledge into practice, but also a very unique part of my university life as a translation major student.
