During the past semester, our students explored issues of forced migration through a meaningful blend of service-learning and game-based learning.
In collaboration with the Centre for Refugees in Hong Kong and supported by HKBU Centre for Innovative Service-Learning - 創新服務學習中心 , three student teams created serious games inspired by real refugee stories.
Through direct engagement with displaced individuals, they transformed lived experiences into game narratives - fostering empathy, intercultural understanding, and critical reflection.

From 射鵰英雄傳 to "Die Legende der Adlerkrieger"
Throwback to November 14: We had a great time with Karin Betz – sinologist, author, translator and winner of the Special Book Prize of China 2024! She has translated numerous books into German, including works by 金庸 (Jin Yong) and 西西 (Xi Xi).
Karin explained how translations help to bridge cultural differences and foster better understanding of the source culture within the target culture, Germany.
She also illustrated the challenges involved in translating Chinese literature into German and provided a live comparison between her own translation and an AI-generated translation from Xi Xi’s famous book "My City"!
Many thanks for visiting the European Studies programme, Karin!

What an inspiring afternoon at the German Consulate General! As part of course EURO4206 (German Foreign Policy & Diplomacy), we had the pleasure of meeting the new Consul General, Dr. Annika Bolten-Drutschmann. The Consul shared her unique insights into the life of a diplomat, the challenges of global politics, and what it means to represent Germany in Hong Kong.
Our group had the chance to dive deeper into current foreign policy issues, ask some tough questions, and learn directly from one of Germany’s leading voices in diplomacy.
Huge thanks to the Consulate for such a warm welcome and engaging discussion!
