禾本辨識課程返嚟喇！

在香港三千多種植物當中，禾本科包含了其中250多種，是香港最大的植物家族。不論在市區、村落、山林、海岸、各處都能發現禾本科植物的蹤影。從餐桌上的稻米和玉米、穀物中的小麥和大麥、涼茶中的竹蔗茅根和薏米，禾本科植物與人類的日常生活息息相關。但由於禾本科植物的關鍵特徵集中在微細的小穗上，需要熟悉專有名詞及累積一定經驗才能配合文獻進行辨識，因此令不少人卻步。

是次課程將由Pi Lab Limited 及 WEEDsilience的專業導師帶領學員走訪香港三個考察點，認識40種本地非竹類禾本科植物。學員能從中學習禾本科植物的基礎結構及禾本科辨識技巧，並了解它們的生境及生態。

考察蘇格蘭的高地
Highland是一個既環境嚴苛又美麗的地方。我們和友人（及她3隻狗）一起駕車露營，一邊體驗寒冷如冬的夏日氣溫，一邊冒着大雨前行。要親身來到這裡才能看到起伏的山脊與蜿蜒河流的壯闊，而我終於明白為什麼這片土地能孕育出凱爾特音樂。
這裡的風景由濕潤的泥炭地、裸露的岩石、風力發電機和牧場交織而成。對我們來說，最有趣的當然是在地面上的花草。與香港不同的是，寒冷地區的草本植物通常長得更加低矮緊湊，有些甚至演化出能抵禦狂風暴雨的花瓣。
這裡我最喜歡的植物是生長在泥炭地、淺水池中、毛茸茸的羊鬍子草。希望下一次能在晴天裡再次見到它們（現在是gel頭失敗的狀態）！
雖然天氣又冷又濕，旅途過程其實並不優雅，但能親眼看到這些植物如何在這樣的天氣中傲然生存，確是很奇妙的。

Highlands - expedition in Scotland
The Scottish Highlands are a brutal yet beautiful place. We were car-camping with a friend (and her three dogs), enduring freezing summer temperatures and soaking rain along the way. You truly have to be here in person to comprehend the sheer scale of the mountain ridges and meandering rivers. Standing amidst it all, I now understand how this landscape nurtured Celtic culture and music.
The scenery is a striking composition of vast peatlands, bare standing rocks, wind turbines, and pastureland. But for us, the real show was right on the ground. Unlike Hong Kong, the cold-region herbs here are generally much more compact and low lying. Some have even evolved specialized petals that can withstand the relentless wind and rain.
One of my favourites was the fluffy Eriophorum clustering in the highland peat and shallow ponds. I hope to see them again next time in better weather! (Currently in a state of hair gel failure).
Despite being too cold and wet to travel decently, it was amazing to see the architecture of the plants which allow them to thrive in weather like this.

Science Salon: Discovering the Urban Wild Plants Around Us

Thank you Prof. Christiane M. Herr, SUSTech School of Design and WANXIA 1012 for inviting Ivy to share our team’s passion for urban wild herbs and urban rewilding with the enthusiastic community here in Shenzhen’s Shekou District. It was wonderful to see so many residents keen to learn how we can bring nature back into our urban spaces! Looking forward to seeing you all next time :)

稻田邊的野草 Wild herbs in rice paddy (2/2)

這裡是其中一些「大地予我」稻田裡及附近的強勢種，有原生的、有外來的，但沒有誰能完全佔據所有的空間!

這幾年，我靜靜地觀察了各樣事物的互動。唯有先理解人類與自然系統之間的各種動態關係，將來才能做出好的設計與介入。一步一步來，慢慢做好。

我們是小團隊，時間與資源有限，未能同時進行多個研究項目。但在這裡觀察到的生態與環境關係、物候、水文、極端天氣的衝擊與復原，以及農夫的視角，這些洞察對我們將來的項目必定有很大的幫助。

最後，衷心謝謝「大地予我」團隊各成員這段日子以來的包容與幫助。🙏🏼🌾

Here are some of the dominant species in and around the “Gift From Land” rice paddies — some native, some exotic — but none of them can completely dominate the land!

Over the past few years, I have quietly observed the interactions between various elements. Only by comprehending the dynamic interplay between human and natural systems can we engineer effective designs and interventions for the future. We’ll take it one step at a time and do our best.
Since we are a very small team with limited time and resources, we cannot undertake multiple research projects simultaneously. However, the insights we’ve gained here — regarding ecological and environmental relationships, phenology, hydrology, the impacts of extreme weather and recovery, and the farmers’ perspectives — will undoubtedly be of great help to our future projects.
Finally, I’d like to sincerely thank the team for their patience and support over the past few years. 🙏🏼🌾

稻田邊的野草 Wild herbs in rice paddy (1/2)

這裡是「大地予我」稻田上其中一些季節性出現/非強勢種，有原生的、有外來的。這裡只是路過隨手採得的，實際上水田可以是個草本多樣性極高的地方，生態價值得更多關注。

待在稻田的觀察日子，四季的植被皆不同。幾年過去，甚至能看見草本植被的演替。隨著農夫的離開，未來的草本多樣性也許會降低；但對我而言，在這裡最大的收穫是——證明了人類在土地上的活動不一定是壞事。（至少站在不同生物的立場而言，有些物種與棲息地減少了，有些卻因此增加了。）

最後，衷心謝謝「大地予我」團隊各成員這段日子以來的包容與幫助。🙏🏼🌾

These are some of the seasonal/ non-dominant species found in the “Gift From Land” rice paddies—some native, some exotic. These are just a handful of herbs I randomly picked up while passing by, rice paddies can be places of extremely high herbaceous diversity, and their ecological value deserves greater attention.

During my time spent in the field, the vegetation changes with the seasons. Over the years, I’ve even observed the succession of herbaceous vegetation. As farmers will soon leave the land, herbaceous diversity may decline in the future; but for me, the greatest takeaway from this experience is that human activity on the land isn’t necessarily a bad thing. (At least from the perspective of different organisms, while some species and habitats have diminished, others have actually increased as a result.)

WEEDsilience was honoured to join the 2026 Planting Knowledge Seminar hosted by the This one-day seminar brought together school teachers, educators, ecologists, landscape architects, and nature lovers to exchange ideas on nature-based education. Benni delivered a talk on ‘Spontaneous Plants in Urban Environments’, while Ivy & Homan’s collaborator - Prof. Christiane Herr from SUSTech, demonstrated the making of petrichor, sharing the unforgettable earthy aroma of rain.

Huge thanks to Gavin Coates .s.coates and the HK Digital Arboretum for the invitation. We loved sharing knowledge with 150 participants at the HKU Kadoorie Centre!

WEEDsilience 榮幸獲邀參加由 HK Digital Arboretum 舉辦的2026植物知識研討會。當日的活動匯聚了中學老師、生態學家、園境師，以及一眾熱愛自然教育的參與者，交流知識與經驗。Benni 分享了’城市環境中的自生植物’，而Ivy和 Homan的合作夥伴一來自深圳南方科技大學的何淨植教授，則示範了潮土油（petrichor）的製作，與參加者分享獨特的泥土氣息和雨後的芳香。

香港的莎草科大約有140多種，在海岸、河溪、森林、草坡等不同生境都能看到莎草的身影。平常食用的馬蹄(荸薺)及包糉用的鹹水草(短葉茳芏)亦是香港莎草科的成員。圖中的鏡子薹草主要生長在溪邊、濕地及棄耕農地中。圖二為它的果囊，包裹着種子(小堅果)，果囊上滿佈乳突狀的結構。圖三為它的花序，頂端纖幼的為雄花序，而下方三枝較粗的為雌花序，這種「雌雄異穗」的現象在不少薹草屬成員上亦會出現。

There are more than 140 species of sedges (Cyperaceae) in Hong Kong, and they can be found in a wide range of habitats such as coasts, streams, forests, and grassy slopes. The water chestnut (𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘤𝘪𝘴) and the salt-water grass (𝘊𝘺𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 var. 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘶𝘴) are also members of Hong Kong’s Cyperaceae. The Convex Utricle Sedge mainly grows along streams, in wetlands, and in abandoned agricultural land. Figure 2 shows its fruiting body (utricle), which encloses the seeds (nutlets). The fruiting body is covered with papillose projections. Figure 3 shows its inflorescence. The slender part at the top is the male inflorescence, while the three thicker below are the female inflorescences. This inflorescence arrangement is also seen in many members of the 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘹 genus.

荒地通常給人一個鳥不生蛋的印象，但在我眼中，荒地卻代表着無限的可能性，是萬物競爭的開端。若果仔細觀察，在一片荒地上可以找到十多種野草。

大雨過後，廢屋旁的荒地長滿了密集的野草，當中的鼠麴草雖然身形矮小，但黃色的花卻在一片綠色中格外顯眼。它們每年都在這個地方出現，開花結果，種子落在泥土裏，留待着明年萌芽。

春天又到了，經過連續數天下雨，天氣又開始變得潮濕，霧氣亦幾乎將山丘遮蓋了，不少植物及菇類從泥土裏探出頭來，晚上亦能聽到蛙類及昆蟲的嗚叫，萬物開始蘇醒。

上星期慶幸在大雨前完成旱季的最後一次野草調查，連續兩個月在香港市區到處跑，終於可以暫停休息一下，亦終於有時間行吓山。
