I was visited at my new office by one of my old students today - Rachelle.

I taught Rachelle from the age of 11, and helped her and her twin brother, Russell, to get into GSIS in HK, then I helped both get scholarships for Sevenoaks School in England, and also helped both of them to get into Cambridge University too.

Rachelle did her Law degree and Masters at Cambridge, and is now off to start a second Masters at Oxford to become a barrister.

Rachelle has also been asked by one of her professors to contribute a chapter of 100 pages on Arbitration Law to a book to be published by Oxford University Press - not bad for a 24 year old!

Nancy has used the time cooped up at home over the past months very productively to hugely improve her English literacy and writing through online lessons. We’re very proud of her!

A couple of years ago, when I first started teaching her, one of my students, who at the time attended a local Hong Kong school, was only reading very basic books - such as ‘Which Witch?’ by Eva Ibbotson.

Now she is thirteen, and has just finished reading ‘Great Expectations’ by Charles Dickens, and has just started at the prestigious Cheltenham Ladies College in England!

Reading is essential for literacy, but children nowadays often do not use a dictionary to look up words they do not understand, and therefore do not develop a concrete understanding of words.

💡Knowing this, one of the things we do is we create vocabulary tests for our students – where we teach them the definitions of lesser known words from fantastic modern children’s fiction – and the following lesson we test them on the set vocabulary.📈

And then once they have finished the set of vocabulary tests for a particular book – we lend the book to the student to read so they can learn how the words are used in context! 📚

We believe in a classical education, and that students should learn knowledge in a wide variety of fields – including Art History – which we give our students readings on.
