[Lecture] Beyond the 100-Story: Another Side of Toshio Iwai
From media art to picture books, how does Japanese media artist and picture book author Toshio Iwai build layered worlds through interactivity, sound, childlike wonder and imagination?
Join us at the University Museum and Art Gallery, HKU, for “Beyond the 100-Story: Another Side of Toshio Iwai”, a lecture in which Toshio Iwai will share the creative journey behind The House of 100 Stories series and reflect on how his cross-disciplinary practice extends from media art into picture books.
A pioneer in media art, Iwai’s works span television, games, interactive installations and electronic musical instruments. His major works include Ugo Ugo Ruuga, the “Bouncing Totoro” exhibit at the Ghibli Museum, the Nintendo DS game Electroplankton, and TENORI-ON, developed in collaboration with Yamaha. Inspired by making handmade toys with his daughter, he later began creating picture books, with The House of 100 Stories series becoming widely popular in Japan and translated into multiple languages.
This lecture will explore how Iwai’s three identities—as media artist, father and picture book author—interweave, offering audiences a glimpse into the technology, aesthetics and familial bonds behind his work.

Upcoming Lecture💬
An Enduring Passion: The 400 Year Dutch Love Affair with Chinese Porcelain
This talk explores the enduring relationship between the Netherlands and Chinese ceramics, tracing its origins, evolution, and relevance within today’s global art market. In the early seventeenth century, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) began importing large quantities of Chinese porcelain into Europe. At the time, Europe had no porcelain production, and Chinese ceramics were therefore seen as exotic, refined, and technically superior to their European counterparts. Chinese (and later also Japanese) porcelain quickly became a symbol of status and taste within Dutch society, becoming embedded in their domestic interiors and cultural identity, and laying the foundation for what can be described as a 400-year love affair.
