๐Huge congratulations to our PhD graduate, Dr. Yijie Wu, on winning the prestigious Li Ka Shing Prize 2024/25!
Dr. Wu earned this top recognition for her thesis: "A Building Skeleton Theory for Automatic 3D Reconstruction of BIM and CIM."
Her thesis introduces a novel theory that simplifies complex 3D building scans into compact "skeletons." By capturing the essential shape and structure of a building, her method makes digital modeling for both individual buildings and entire cities significantly more manageable.
Her experiments demonstrate that this theory not only accurately and compactly reconstructs building surfaces and volumes, but also enables advanced analysis of building shapes and patterns for Building Information Modeling (BIM) and City Information Modeling (CIM).
We are incredibly proud of Dr. Wuโs achievement, which perfectly exemplifies our departmentโs commitment to pushing the boundaries of digital technology and innovation in the built environment.

Inspiring the future of sustainable architecture!
Earlier this month, Prof. Wilson Lu and PhD candidate Yuchen Gao visited the Aedas Taikoo office to share cutting-edge insights on Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) with industry professionals and future architects. Aedas is an architecture firm that has a long presence in Hong Kong market and beyond.
Yuchen shared her research on a "Generative approach for low carbon MiC design" with architecture interns from HKU and CUHK, offering them a glimpse into the future of the field alongside some great career advice. Following this, Prof. Lu took the stage to deliver a company-wide keynote on "MiC Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA): Perspectives from MiC Trio." The engaging session highlighted cutting-edge sustainable innovations and further strengthened the collaborative bridge between academic research and world-class architectural practice.
We love seeing our academic research connect directly with leading industry practices. A big thank you to Aedas for hosting us!

We are incredibly proud of our iLab PhD candidates for actively engaging in international Knowledge Exchange (KE) and sharing their research in AI, sustainable design, and architecture across the globe this summer. Here are some recent highlights:
2026 ASHRAE Annual Conference (Austin, Texas | June 27 โ July 1)
Ms. Zihan Xu presented her innovative research on occupancy-driven generative design for modular buildings. Her study explores how heterogeneous occupancy schedules can optimize early-stage design to enhance both thermal comfort and energy efficiency. The conference provided a fantastic platform for fruitful exchanges with international experts in AI-driven building performance!
2026 AASA/ACSA International Conference (Brisbane, Australia)
PhD candidates Wang Bolun and Zhang Yi represented us at the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) conference, delivering compelling oral presentations on the future of Generative AI (GenAI) in architectural applications, namely, โAgentic AI-Enhanced Multi-Agent System for Facade Optimization of Cost-effective Well-beingโ and โBridging Words and Worlds: Latent Space Alignment for Text-Conditioned 3D Architectural Generation.โ
These international conferences are vital for Knowledge Exchange, allowing our students to connect with global peers and bring fresh, tech-driven perspectives back to HKU. Congratulations on your successful presentations!
