📜 Abstract:
[❶Workshop] This workshop helps you prepare your next paper submission with an insider’s tour of two top journals in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics: Computer Assisted Language Learning (Taylor & Francis) and ReCALL (Cambridge Core/EuroCALL). The two chief editors will discuss aims, scope, and what “fit” really means; show how strong theory, rigorous design, and relevance beyond local contexts lift a manuscript; and highlight relevant areas such as corpus linguistics, digital literacies, learning analytics, and SLA can be researched in combination with technology. Editorial screening, peer review, common reasons for desk rejection, and reviewer selection will be covered. Finally, generative AI’s implications for writing and peer review, e.g., acceptable uses, boundaries, and broader ethical issues, will also be addressed.
[❷Seminar]
This talk explores a relatively neglected resource used by L2 speakers in spoken interaction – laughter. I begin the talk by exploring the limited nature of the study of laughter in L2 speech and the conflation of laughter with other phenomena which, while related, are not co-terminus with laughter. I then critique the scope of these studies from three perspectives – their consideration of cross-cultural variation, their consideration of the intersection between L2 laughter and proficiency and the scale and generalizability of studies touching upon laughter in speech to date. My response to these issues is a large scale, corpus-based, study of laughter in an L2 British English spoken conversational learner corpus, the Trinity Lancaster Corpus (Gablasova, Brezina and McEnery, 2019) which allows me to address all three of these points. The results show that laughter is a crucial resource deployed in spoken interaction between L1 and L2 speakers that shows a marked degree of variation by L1 background.

📜 Abstract:
Securing research funding in applied linguistics increasingly requires not only strong ideas, but the ability to articulate a coherent and programmatic line of inquiry across projects and funding cycles. Drawing on longitudinal research with bilingual learners, this seminar examines how research designs, theoretical frameworks, and empirical findings can be strategically mobilized in grant development. It addresses a persistent challenge in the field: aligning research questions with shifting funding priorities while maintaining conceptual coherence and a sustained research trajectory. Particular attention is given to how longitudinal data can be leveraged to demonstrate innovation, significance, and impact, as well as to support claims about scalability and knowledge mobilization. The seminar also offers practical insight into crafting persuasive proposals, identifying common pitfalls, and approaching revision and resubmission as part of an iterative process.

📜 Abstract:
This seminar provides a concise overview of European Union grant opportunities for Hong Kong universities in humanities, linguistics, languages, and education for 2026-2027. We'll explore two key avenues. Horizon Europe (Cluster 2 and MSCA Staff Exchanges/Doctoral Networks) allows Hong Kong entities to join consortia, with EU funding often conditional on explicit mention or essential partner status. Erasmus+ offers clearer pathways, with Hong Kong directly eligible for International Mobility (KA171), Jean Monnet Actions, and Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters.
Hong Kong universities can serve as vital partners in areas like corpus development, digital humanities, and educational innovation. The seminar will cover eligibility, funding mechanisms, and strategies for building impactful EU collaborations.

📜 Abstract:
This talk offers a practical, behind-the-scenes look at how to secure external research funding in language studies. Drawing on my experience with grants from the Spencer Foundation, AERA, ACTFL, NCTE, and TESOL, I share how research ideas evolve into fundable projects grounded in translanguaging, bilingual education, and social justice. The session highlights key strategies for identifying funding opportunities, aligning research with agency priorities, and crafting compelling proposals. I will also discuss lessons learned across different stages of my funding trajectory—from seed grants to larger collaborative projects—while offering concrete insights for developing a coherent and fundable research agenda.

Last Friday (10 April), we had a fantastic time at our MAICT Taste Lecture!
Dr Marija Todorova led an eye-opening session titled "The World Through Images: Visual Narratives and Their Interpretation." Our students explored how visual literacy is an essential skill in today’s world—learning that translation isn’t just about words, but also about the framing, colours, and power dynamics behind the images we see every day.
It was a wonderful "taste" of what students can expect from our Master of Arts in Intercultural Communication and Translation (MAICT) programme. Thank you to everyone who joined us online!

📜 Abstract:
Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA hereafter) is a string alignment technique which aligns all the strings in the data (e.g. DNA sequences, IPA transcriptions) simultaneously for subsequent analysis. This technique is widely used in bioinformatics, where DNA sequences are multi-aligned in order to detect distances between different species.
In this talk, I will introduce how MSA has traditionally been used for dialect classification in dialectometry (a quantitative branch of dialectology), as well as its broader applications in dialectology and neighbouring fields, such as historical linguistics and sociolinguistics. I will demonstrate that MSA not only opens up new research possibilities, but it also makes quantitative and computational dialectology more transparent, enhancing the explanatory aspect of the existing dialectometric techniques.

📜 Abstract:
We live in a world overflowing with images, and these visuals quietly shape how we see other people and cultures. This one hour teaser lecture explores how visual representation constructs meaning across cultural boundaries, sometimes reinforcing stereotypes and sometimes offering space for re imagination. Through examples drawn from literature, media, and humanitarian communication, participants will unpack how framing, colour, posture, and captioning construct particular versions of reality. The session introduces key concepts from intercultural communication and visual semiotics, highlighting how perspective, power, and context influence every act of looking. Ultimately, this session highlights visual literacy as an essential intercultural skill for communicators and globally engaged citizens. It extends the practice of translation beyond words to include images and the meanings they carry.
