Facilitating higher-order thinking with the flipped classroom model: a student teacher’s experience in a Hong Kong secondary school - Research and Practice in Technology Enhanced Learning 15/09/2023

《Will the Rains Bring Back Online Learning? 》
~ Reasons for implementing an online learning approach due to unpredictable weather conditions
Last few Fridays were an atypical typical day for Hong Kong. It began at midnight, for me, with a restless sleep with my furry cats bothering me with their fluffy tails waving from left to right constantly. Waving tails is not just a specialty for cats, but also typhoons. With two typhoons back to back, their tails created tremendous record-breaking rainfall that created landslips, flooding, and chaos.
Online learning was extinguished after post-covid in Hong Kong with schools resuming back to normal. Asian countries weren’t thrilled about online learning, while many western countries have been adopting this change. The main reason is due to too many misunderstandings, as Harrow International School’s article* stated.
Revisiting the Flipped Classroom Due to Global Warming
Studies^ have shown that the new education method, the flipped classroom, can provide a holistic learning environment. This has been documented in the Hong Kong Education Bureau as well. The flipped classroom approach focuses on students learning materials online while exercise and practice will be done at school.
With global warming creating unpredictable stormy weather, this method perhaps should be reviewed again. As Hong Kong’s pedagogical system is primarily on rote memorization, online learning can provide the same learning environment. When students go back to school, they can focus on offline learning that is more interactive and creative.
During stormy days, most students are restrained at home and do not have many activities. Keeping online learning channels open should be a reasonable backup plan for many schools, especially for DSE students.

《Personalize Your Reading Habit 1.0》
~How to read without just reading

Many have asked me how to learn new knowledge, especially English. I had told them endlessly and tirelessly, “Roma wasn’t built in a day. Knowledge accumulates by consistently learning and absorbing the context.” Today, we will talk about reading knowledge.

“Reading is difficult and boring,” is a phrase that many nod their heads to instantly. Yes, I agree reading is boring if the materials aren’t attracting to you. Aside from assignments, reading is extremely personal. Hence, finding your own reading sense and developing from there, is essential to being a reader who can read and absorb the context. Below are the steps that I’d shared with many.

Step 1: Finding Your Own Match
Some prefer caviar, some prefer trout. There is no right or wrong in books. Finding what you like and matching it with what you need should be your first principle.

Step 2: Salt and Pepper
Food tastes better with seasoning, so does book. An eye-pleasing bookmark, some colorful highlighters, and a nice looking cover can remind you to “read me!”

Step 3: Location, location, and location
Location is the key to buying property, and so does book. Put it in the most convenient location where you will be able to access it easily and see it often.

Step 4: Copy Cat
Before we run, we first need to crawl. You cannot be the great of xyz knowledge without first copying other great works. I am not asking you to just copy and paste. I am asking you to copy the style, the method, the theory, and such. Then elaborate on your own.

Step 5: Eternal Registration
Memory is quite a science. To store new tidings in long-term memory, you must learn how to make a personal connection with them. It can be a past event that’s related to this tidying or a tragedy that you read on the news. Personal events or shocking news tend to be stored in your long-term memory much better. Hence, link it with the new tiding you want to save in your brain.

《Learning from Mistakes》
~ A glimpse of the needed soft skill for employment through a football ceremony
If you recall in the 2022 World Cup final, there was a conflict during the ceremony. Surrounded by over a dozen team members, Messi is holding the FIFA World Cup championship trophy with his biggest grin. On the contrary, Mbappé is holding his World Cup Golden Boot award in the side corner by himself. A classic comic’s conflict is a reality in play.
An individual’s achievement has less value than a team’s success. This is a veracity in many workforces. Hence, leadership has become the talk of the town for generations.
Leadership is one of the most common soft skills that many of us understand; its worth and its significance. With AI technology taking us into a workforce transformation, many young people will be facing challenges that we have never experienced before. More than half of the young population do not believe that they are ready for the workforce, according to a recent survey done by Cengage Group*. Hence, it is crucial to learn how to be a good leader before applying for jobs. A skill that AI technology has not yet comprehended and is still in high demand at work.
Harvard Business Review* recently published an article about leadership behaviors. It mentioned leadership is about inclusive focus, people management, and sensible ex*****on.
Inclusive Focus: As you climb the ladder, prioritize long-term planning over immediate tasks, constantly scanning for future opportunities, and ensuring your team is prepared for the future.
People Management: As a leader, you need to avoid overemphasizing strategy over working relationships as you accumulate responsibility. Also, you should comprehend in managing people’s expectations, department conflicts, and whatnot.
Sensible Ex*****on: Leaders with more power tend to be more optimistic about achievable goals, but it's crucial to stay grounded by considering data, details, and employees' perspectives.

《Let’s put you back in the game》
~ Soft skills as a game changer
Like Mr. Cheng* said, we need to better equip ourselves with soft skills to continue our race with technology’s advancement. During industrial period, we change our labor force focused from man-labor to machinery. To adopt this change, we, people, moved from manufacturing industry to service industry. Now in technology era, we must change and adopt for this AI transformation.
Far from us, many USA unions* went on strike because film companies are replacing them with AI technology, including screenwriters, background characters, etc.
Close to us, Hong Kong has recently introduced AI weather announcer*. Those have a direct impact to the new generation. Preventing the new generation from unemployed, come and learn more on how to improve the soft skills.
Soft skills can be categorized as communication, management, leadership, and others. GENZHUB provides those programs to enhance our community’s ability to fight against AI. Aside from those programs, GENZHUB also offers free USA study guidelines, free educational content, grants, and competitions. Please click www.genzhub.org and register to receive free materials that can help fighting in this technology era.
