[Sharing of ”ATI Summer Seminar 2026“ in Rome 🇮🇹]
✍️By Theo Lee, PhD Student of Department of Religion and Philosophy
With the invaluable support of both the and the Department of Religion and Philosophy, I am honoured to participate: ATI Summer Seminar in Asian Philosophy and Scholasticism, 2026: ”Mind in Neo-Confucianism and European Scholasticism“, which was held in the Thomistic Institute at the Angelicum ,Rome.
The programme conducted a hybrid learning scheme, mixing lecture and seminar-style discussion, revolving around the field of philosophy of mind. Thus, every day we would learn a sub-topic of this field via Neo-Confucianism or European Scholasticism’s lens, then we would have the presenters of the day on the sub-topic and followed with open discussions. The atmosphere was vibrant and friendly, fuelled with curiosity. I was very lucky to be in such an environment, for I was able to receive various insights from various angles as a listener, enriching my imagination of further research; also, able to debate my thinking with experts like Prof. Bryan W. Van Norden, Prof. Giorgio Pini, and Prof. James Dominic Rooney, as a presenter.
We, participants engaged in multiple fascinating topics: the nature of intellection, the differences of human’s mind and Heaven’s (Tiān) mind, the account of weakness of will based on different models of mind, etc.
The wonders did not cease with the lectures and discussions. I was blessed to have the chance to visit different historical basilicas and chapels in the country, guided by Prof. James Dominic Rooney. Among all, St. Peter’s Basilica’s memory is most vivid; it was an utterly different experience than looking at the photos or reading some texts online, being physically present in those buildings. When one enters the building of centuries, the grand and solemn atmosphere awes one into contemplation, which widens my thinking in general.

📕 New Publication Announcement | "Social Media and Hong Kong Christian Communities: Diversity and Equality"
by CAE Research Fellows, Prof. Ann Gillian Chu 朱安之 and Prof. Rachel Robertson
✍️Abstract
Social media in Hong Kong Christian communities has been viewed in terms of social equalization, allowing laity to shape theology and community practices. But how is social media an equalizer for religious communities, and along which social dimensions? Drawing on Heidi A. Campbell’s “layers” and Pauline Hope Cheong’s “logics” of power, we offer a framework for examining how social media affects leadership roles, community practices, ideology and identity, and approaches to religious texts, in terms of whether these impacts are continuous with and complementary to existing power structures, displace traditional authority, or involve a dialectic between the two. Through case studies of Hong Kong Christian Key Opinion Leaders (KOL), we show displacements of official roles by lay leaders interacting with an underlying logic of continuity along traditional lines such as gender, social class, and sexual orientation. Online structures of community practice complement existing power structures, reinforcing traditional hierarchies of identity, ideology, and religious texts. We conclude by considering how theological approaches to dispossession may help Hong Kong Christian communities to enter a dialectic of challenges and opportunities for equality.
