Miss Rainbow Leung Wing Hei (PhD student) and Dr. Martina Lei Mang Leng (graduate) from PolyUโs Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology delivered an exceptional performance at the 12th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.
With their groundbreaking project, โTherapeutic efficacy of peptide-linked chimeric antigen receptor macrophages (pCAR-M) in solid tumors,โ the team won the Grand Prize in the Innovation category and the First Prize in the Life Sciences category.
Supervised by Prof. Terence Lee Kinโwah, Associate Head and Professor, and Prof. Clarence Wong Tsunโting, Assistant Professor of the same department, the project pioneers a peptideโlinked system to engineer macrophages instead of T cells, offering a novel approach to treating solid tumours. The pCARโM platform is faster, safer, and more accessible, with potential applicability to 92% of malignant tumours, unlocking vast opportunities in the solid-tumour market.
๐ Congratulations to our young innovators for their remarkable achievement!

On 3 June, GS co-hosted a Mediation Workshop for RPg Supervisors with the Hong Kong Mediation Centre (HKMC). The workshop introduced the fundamentals of mediation and examined how these skills can be applied to build and sustain positive, effective supervisory relationships. ๐ซ
The session opened with a welcome note from Prof. XIA Yong, Associate Dean of GS. Prof. Francis Law, President of HKMC, then shared his expertise on practical strategies for conflict resolution and constructive dialogue. Using real-life scenarios, Prof. Law facilitated interactive group discussions, where participants exchanged perspectives and explored approaches to improving supervisor-student communications. ๐ก
Upholding our ongoing commitment to supporting staff development and enhancing studentsโ learning experience, GS will continue rolling out targeted professional development sessions that empower our academic team, strengthen collaboration across the university and foster a more harmonious academic environment for both supervisors and RPg students.

Originally from Ghana, Ms Dompey is a second-year Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) awardee in the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE). Her research focuses broadly on infrastructure management, with a particular emphasis on road condition assessment. ๐
Speaking about the fellowship, she expressed: โHKPFS has been a huge support system for me. It covers my tuition and provides a monthly stipend for living expenses, allowing me to fully concentrate on my research. It also supported my participation in international conferences, strengthening my public speaking skills and expanding my academic network.โ
Dompey also shared: โPolyU offers the tools and facilities I need โ from publication databases and seminars to excellent mentorship. Serving on the research student conference committee also taught me a lot about how events are organised in Hong Kong and gave me the chance to connect with people outside my usual circle.โ ๐ซ
Living and studying in Hong Kong has been an exhilarating experience for Dompey. She especially values the cityโs approach to sustainable construction, and with its limited land, this has reshaped her perspectives about infrastructure and urban planning. ๐๏ธ
For students considering applying for HKPFS, she has one simple advice: โTrust your abilities, apply with confidence, and choose PolyU for the opportunities it offers to grow academically and personally.โ ๐ก

Earlier this April, we were honoured to welcome a delegation from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to PolyU. As Singaporeโs lead public sector R&D agency, A*STAR plays a pivotal role in advancing science, bridging academia with industry and nurturing scientific talent for the wider research community.
Guests began with a tour of our state-of-the-art laboratories, followed by an overview of the university delivered by Prof. Christopher Chao, Senior Vice President (Research & Innovation) of PolyU. Prof. Zuankai Wang, Dean of Graduate School, together with colleagues from other units, showcased the universityโs latest developments. Highlights ranged from our collaborative PhD programmes, Hong Kongโs research and innovation landscape, our research excellence, funding opportunities, AI ethics and data governance, and the new establishment of the PolyU Aerospace Research Academy.
A forward-looking dialogue brought both institutions together to explore ways to deepen collaboration in areas such as talent mobility, joint PhD supervision, and research initiatives. The exchange also provided valuable insights into the evolving research ecosystems of Hong Kong and Singapore. ๐๐
The visit marks an important step in building bridges of innovation and talent โ not just between PolyU and A*STAR, but also across the broader Hong Kong-Singapore research partnership. Together, we look forward to nurturing young researchers and driving collaborative efforts to new heights. ๐

A night of inspiration and connection at the MTE Supervisor-Student Pairing Dinner! Held earlier this March, this memorable evening brought together PolyU professors, supervisors and students from Master of Technology Entrepreneurship (MTE) programme to exchange ideas, showcase projects, and build meaningful bonds.
The evening opened with warm remarks from Prof. Jin Guang TENG, President of PolyU, who highlighted the golden era of technology and entrepreneurship. He encouraged students to seize opportunities in AI driven revolutions and leverage PolyUโs strong resources, especially our Mainland Translational Research Institutes (MTRIs) across over 10 Chinese Mainland cities to transform their startups into real ventures.
Prof. WANG Zuankai, Dean of the Graduate School, also shared his vision of the MTE programme as a key step in nurturing innovation. He described seeing Motivation, Talent, and Energy (M-T-E) in our students, and emphasised that by pairing them with the right supervisors and utilising the power of technology, bold ideas can evolve into impactful results.
โจ A highlight of the evening was the interactive presentations by two MTE student teams, who captivated the audience with their innovative projects in Health Sciences and Artificial Intelligence.
๐ธThe evening wrapped up with a lively buffet dinner, where students connected directly with their supervisors and professors โmentors who will guide them every step of the way in their entrepreneurial journey. We are already excited to see what our MTE students can achieve as they take this momentum forward!
