EAF Public Lecture by Prof. Nobuyuki HANAKI: Valuing Algorithms Over Experts: Evidence from a Stock Price Forecasting Experiment🌟
On December 5, 2025, the department hosted a public lecture by Professor Nobuyuki Hanaki, a world leading experimental economist. Professor Hanaki is the Director of the Institute of Social and Economic Research at Osaka University and a member of the EAF Academic Advisory Board. His lecture presented an interesting and inspiring experimental study comparing participants’ willingness to pay for stock forecasting advice derived from algorithms, financial experts, and peers. 📈💬
The public lecture was well attended by EAF faculty and students, despite coinciding with the exam revision period, including participants in the BBA Economics Future Economist Program, and sparked lively discussion. The lecture was part of Professor Hanaki’s visit to the department, which also included meetings to discuss potential joint research projects and consultations with individual faculty members. 🌐🤝

EAF Department Forges Unified Path Forward at Annual Retreat
The Department of Economics and Finance (EAF) successfully hosted its Annual Department Retreat at the Alva Hotel by Royal on 11 September 2025. The event provided a crucial strategic platform, bringing together faculty and staff to align departmental objectives with the broader vision of the School of Business (SBUS).
The retreat featured in-depth sessions focused on integrating SBUS’s Strategic Priorities with EAF’s operational goals. Department teams presented concrete Autumn Strategic Actions designed to translate these priorities into tangible outcomes. Performance updates further highlighted progress in Student Recruitment and new initiatives for Research development. A collaborative open-floor discussion fostered a unified approach to future opportunities, generating valuable feedback from faculty. The retreat concluded with a clear summary of key takeaways and actionable next steps to guide the department's activities in the coming months.

Real Estate Minor Students Hit the Streets in First “Professional Practice Challenges” Bootcamp
The Department of Economics and Finance is proud to celebrate the successful launch of our inaugural mini-bootcamp for the new RICS-Accredited Minor in Real Estate Finance and Investment. Held last Saturday, the event kicked off the “Professional Practice Challenges”, a cornerstone of the programme designed to bridge academic theory with real-world application. This new minor offers BBA (Finance and Banking) students a direct pathway to becoming a Chartered Surveyor, and this first bootcamp set a dynamic tone for the practical learning ahead.
Students began their day with an immersive visit to the City Gallery, gaining vital insights into the complex urban planning and development that shapes Hong Kong. The learning then moved to the field with an extensive site visit across Tsim Sha Tsui and Hung Hom. Tasked with a real-world problem, our students were challenged to identify and evaluate investment opportunities in key subsectors like medical centres, commercial shopping malls, and student dormitories, applying their classroom knowledge to tangible assets.
A highlight of the day was the direct engagement with industry leaders. We were thrilled to welcome Mr. Alvin Leung, an esteemed industry expert invited by the leader of the Professional Practice Challenges, Prof. Keith McKinnel. Acting as “the Client”, Mr. Leung shared current market intelligence on investment opportunities and will guide and assess the students' performance throughout their projects. This direct mentorship ensures our students gain an invaluable industry perspective, preparing them to excel in the competitive real estate sector.

On the morning of 11 September, our department hosted a tea reception to welcome our new cohort of mainland students. Held from 10:30 to 11:30 AM, the event provided a relaxed and friendly setting for students and faculty members to connect and get to know each other better.
Around 30 mainland students joined the reception, which began with warm welcome remarks from the department head. This was followed by a helpful presentation delivered in Mandarin by one of our colleagues, covering key school regulations and academic requirements — an important and reassuring session for students adjusting to a new academic environment.
The highlight of the reception, however, was the informal interaction between students and teachers over tea and cakes. Laughter and conversation filled the room as both sides engaged in open and friendly dialogue. Many students took the opportunity to share their aspirations and the challenges they’ve encountered so far. Teachers responded with encouragement, practical advice, and a genuine willingness to support.
The session officially ended with a group photo to capture the moment, but the room remained lively as several students lingered to continue the conversation with faculty members. It was clear that the event succeeded not only in providing useful information but also in fostering a sense of community and support — a promising start to the academic journey ahead.

(EAF) RICS Accreditation Visit - Launch of New Minor in “Real Estate Finance and Investment” within the BBA-FB Programme
On 10 June 2025, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Accreditation Visit has been successfully completed. The panel members evaluated our BBA-FB Programme to ensure that we meet the required standards to include a new minor in “Real Estate Finance and Investment”.
We are proud to share that this new minor has successfully received accreditation from the esteemed RICS. This accreditation underscores our commitment to providing high-quality education that meets industry standards and prepares our students for successful careers in the real estate sector.
The “Real Estate Finance and Investment” minor will offer students an in-depth understanding of key concepts in real estate and equip students with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of real estate finance. We believe that this new offer will not only enhance our curriculum but also provide our students with valuable insights and opportunities in the growing field of real estate.
Thank you for the support from RICS! EAF strives to enrich our academic programmes and provide our students with an exceptional learning experience.

2025 Policy Address Consultation Session for Post-Secondary Students
The EAF Department encouraged and prepared SBus students to participate in the 2025 Policy Address consultation session for post-secondary students hosted by the Education Bureau (EDB).
As part of a pilot program, we selected four outstanding students majoring in Economics and Global Business Management. To ensure they were well-prepared for the consultation session, we organized a preparatory workshop on August 26, featuring Dr. Chan Chi Kit, Director of the Institute for Youth Sustainability Leadership and Associate Director of the Centre for Public Policy Research, as our guest speaker. Dr. Chan, together with EAF academics, provided valuable insights into the core issues outlined by the EDB, which included (1) post-secondary education policies and (2) social mobility and youth policies.
The two-hour consultation session took place on August 27, at the Education Bureau’s Kowloon Tong Education Services Centre, which attracted numerous students from various higher education institutions across Hong Kong. Our students gained significant exposure, learning from their peers how to articulate their perspectives and present their suggestions effectively. Their participation in this government policy consultation not only enhanced their understanding of important issues but also equipped them to become agile, creative thinkers with the ability to challenge norms and contribute to shaping a better future.
