Dr KW Ma and Dr Kotewall are performing right trisectionectomies, which remove 75% of the liver. The liver is the only visceral organ capable of regeneration, and this amazing ability was described as far back as the ancient Greek myth of Prometheus!

Did you know? Sir James Cantlie co-founded the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese, which is now today’s University of Hong Kong. One of his first pupils was Sun Yat-sen!

How else is he related to this week’s module? He was also the first to describe Cantlie’s line, an imaginary line dividing the left and right lobes of the liver. Surgeons use it to perform hepatectomies – the removal of part of the liver.
