When we want to arouse the attention of the child… 🔥
04/11/2023
“There is no love in our hearts for the human beings from whom we have received, and are receiving so much in bread and clothing, and numerous inventions for our benefit. We take and enjoy all that is done for us without gratitude, like atheists who withhold their gratitude and love from God. Perhaps we teach the child to thank God and pray to Him, but not to thank humanity, God’s prime agent in creation; we give no thought to the men and women who daily give their lives that we may live more richly. The child will have the greater pleasure in all subjects, and find them easier to learn, if he were led to realize how these subjects first came to be studied and who studied them. We write and read, and the child can be taught who invented writing and the instruments wherewith we write, how printing came and books became so numerous. Every achievement has come by the sacrifice of someone now dead. Every map speaks eloquently of the work of explorers and pioneers, who underwent hardships and trials to find new places, rivers and lakes, and to make the world greater and richer for our dwelling.”

Let us not forget to love in education.
“Let us in education always call the attention of children to the hosts of men and women who are hidden from the light of fame, so kindling a love of humanity; not the vague and anemic sentiment preached today as brotherhood, nor the political sentiment that the working classes should be redeemed and uplifted. What is most wanted is no patronizing charity for humanity, but a reverent consciousness of its dignity and worth. This should be cultivated in the same way as a religious sentiment, which, indeed, should be in us all, for we should not need to be reminded that no man can love God, while remaining indifferent to his neighbor.”

“He, who does not possess the world of the imagination, is poor. But the child with too much fantasy is a disturbed child. We do not know how to calm him. We do not say: “Let us suppress the imagination of that child’s mind,” but rather: “The child’s imagination is insufficient for his mind.” We must nourish the other facet of his intelligence, that which has to do with the external world and his activity. It is in this way that we will help him grow in discipline.”

What is learning for children? By experiencing with their own hands, own eyes, own ears.
From concrete to abstract
所以自己動手做才能學習,而且由具體去抽象、由基本去複雜。

How do children develop “internal discipline”?
Simply, b y w o r k . (So are we as adult no? Real work that we love tho!)
When children complete work by themselves, they are so happy and satisfied that no reward or penalty would give them the same happiness, satisfaction, nor the experience to develop themselves.

This passage reminds me the new students - small 3 years old children coming to the classroom. It worried me at first but I’m learning to relax, step back, just prepare a suitable environment and let our children practice as much as they want.

“Let us suppose that a child of three or four comes to one of our schools while he has not yet attained this quality. There are signs by which this can easily be discovered. In the first place his movements are clumsy–fundamental muscular coordination is lacking. Now it is not the slightest use to try and counteract this with minute corrections. He requires an education which delicately coordinates the finer movements. It is precisely to meet this need that we have in our schools child-sized furniture, light to move and bright in color. If the child is clumsy he knocks things over, makes a noise and soils the pretty paint. This makes him more careful and he soon learns to move his chair without making the least noise, to clean the paint carefully with soap and water. As he learns to handle the materials carefully his delight grows, and eventually he can be trusted to dust the cupboard with the fragile glasses inside. There is no need to worry about his ungainly movements, his screaming and clumsiness now, they will vanish of their own accord.”

Dr. Montessori reminds us that even we may not be able to set up a child friendly environment at home, we can provide a “suitable spiritual environment”.
Read the full paragraph below:
“In the home, the ideal environment for the child should also contain child-sized furniture, and utensils which he can handle himself. This is not yet practical in every home, but at least the adult can provide the child with a suitable spiritual environment. The adult must not interfere, must not act instead of the child. Give him the means and let him act: his freedom consists of this. On every teacher and every parent, I urge not great instruction, but humility and simplicity in dealing with small children. Their lives are fresh, without rivalry or external ambitions, it takes so little to make them happy, to let them work in their own way towards the normal development of the men and women they will be. The great benefit we can bestow on childhood is the exercise of restraint in ourselves.”

“A kind of curtain comes down over the child’s mind, making him psychologically ever more deaf and blind. It is as though the subconscious mind were to say: “You speak, but I am not listening; you repeat things, but I do not hear you. I cannot build up my world because I am building up a wall of defense so that you cannot come in!””
