Can contemporary art bring new imaginations into centuries-old village traditions?

The Centre for Civil Society and Governance (CCSG) at HKU warmly invites you to visit the “Celebrating Traditional Wisdom Through Art.” Hosted at the iconic Fringe Club in Central, this unique exhibition showcases how sustainability, heritage, and creative expression come together.

Late last year, a group of emerging artists embarked on an incubation journey in the 300-year-old Hakka village of Lai Chi Wo. Drawing inspiration from the village's rich heritage and landscape, 15 artists have translated their experiences into contemporary artworks centered around three core elements: Soil, Plants, and Sound.

From natural dyes created from native plants to soundscapes recorded in the village and ceramic creations, the exhibition offers a refreshing sensory exploration of rural sustainability and community resilience.

Earlier in May, the Centre for Civil Society and Governance at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) hosted the official launch of the Network for the Study of Social-Ecological Systems (SES) Transformation, convened by Professor Wai-Fung Lam and Dr. Vivian Chu .

Researchers active in studying SES in the APAC region engaged in an interactive roundtable discussion, sharing research interests and exploring potential points of collaboration. Key themes emerged around governance, equitable partnerships, leadership, community adaptation, and the influence of knowledge and values on SES transformation. These discussions were dynamically mapped on screen and clustered into three thematic working groups, each group concentrated on specific facets of social-ecological systems, refining their focus by leveraging members’ field experiences and collaboratively identifying shared challenges and opportunities for joint initiatives. We are also grateful to Professor Alta de Vos from Stellenbosch University and Professor Maiko Nishi from Nihon University for giving us an introduction to the Society for Social-Ecological Systems and outlining its regional hub structure and strategic objectives.

Day two of the Dialogue commenced with a workshop led by Dr. Ruth Meinzen-Dick, Research Fellow Emeritus at International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). The workshop emphasized translating complex academic concepts into practical language suitable for diverse audiences, including policymakers, NGOs, and community stakeholders. Participants practiced articulating their research without technical jargon, fostering a shared understanding across disciplines and sectors.

Oyster reefs are among the world’s most valuable coastal ecosystems, providing numerous important ecosystem services. However, oyster reef ecosystems have experienced dramatic declines over the past centuries across many parts of the world. As interest in oyster reef restoration continues to grow globally, understanding where reefs historically existed – and how they were transformed over time – is important.

Our paper, “𝗔 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆: 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹-𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻”, addresses a major knowledge gap surrounding the historical extent and decline of oyster reefs in Asia.

Using a broad range of historical evidence, the paper reconstructs more than 7,000 years of oyster-related social–ecological systems (SESs) in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), alongside additional historical evidence from across Asia. The review demonstrates that oysters were once naturally widespread throughout the PRD and deeply embedded within local culture, livelihoods, economies, and regional development.
The study traces how oyster-related SESs evolved from relatively small-scale subsistence harvesting prior to the Tang Dynasty, toward increasingly intensive exploitation associated with population growth, land reclamation, coastal modification, and industrial lime production during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Over time, these socio-economic interactions progressively destabilised oyster reef systems, contributing to widespread degradation and the near-complete removal of naturally occurring oyster reef habitats.

As the paper highlights, oysters have been intertwined with the culture and development of southern China for millennia. However, the transition from subsistence use toward industrial-scale extraction fundamentally altered the relationship between communities and oyster ecosystems. Future restoration efforts should not solely focus on ecological recovery, but also consider historical baselines, social practices, and long-term human–environment relationships in order to support more resilient and sustainable coastal SESs.

To kick off our conference and network launch event for the Network for the Study of Social-Ecological Systems (SES) Transformations, the Centre for Civil Society and Governance hosted a public dialogue on “Building Resilient Urban-Rural Partnerships.”

We were very pleased to welcome network members from across the Asia-Pacific region, alongside practitioners, government representatives, and guests from Hong Kong to the event.

We would like to sincerely thank Professor Samson Tse, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Ms. Linda So, JP, Director of the Northern Metropolis Co-ordination Office, for delivering the opening remarks. Ms. So’s opening speech was both inspiring and timely, reinforcing the importance of advancing nature-based solutions and sustainable practices as well as the government’s understanding of the challenges and opportunities in building a resilient and sustainable future through the Northern Metropolis Development.
We were also honoured to have Professor Yahua Wang (Tsinghua University) and Dr. Ruth Meinzen-Dick (International Food Policy Research Institute) as our keynote speakers.

Professor Wang explained the challenges of applying the SES framework across contexts due to variability in variable selection and interpretation, while also highlighting the importance of complexity, robustness, collaborative networks, and the potential for integrating AI and SES research. He also reflected on the importance of collaborative networks in working toward a more common SES language.

Building on this, Dr. Meinzen-Dick spoke to the importance of bridging theory and practice, transdisciplinarity, and building connections across people, institutions, and disciplines. She highlighted the importance of engaging with property rights and collective action in robust ways, and reflected on how experiential learning fosters collective action.

We were pleased to also offer a panel session featuring Professor Maiko Nishi, Professor Ching-Ping Tang, Professor Stephen Tang, and our Centre Director Professor Wai-Fung Lam. Dr. Winnie Law led a fruitful discussion on critical issues such as challenges in evaluating and understanding social-ecological systems beyond conventional metrics, including how to capture the broader social, ecological, and long-term impacts of these systems and partnerships.

Thank you once again to all keynote speakers, panelists, participants, and guests for contributing to such a thoughtful discussion.

Building systems that can adapt, evolve, and continue to function under pressure is a central challenge for sustainability. In social–ecological systems (SES), this notion of robustness is key to understanding how systems respond to uncertainty and change.

Our paper, “Building robustness for rural revitalization: A social-ecological system perspective,” explores how collaborative governance and institutional design can strengthen the robustness of rural systems.

Drawing on the case of Lai Chi Wo in Hong Kong, the study shows how carefully designed institutions, – characterised by diversity, modularity, redundancy, and effective learning, – can support collaborative processes and enhance rural sustainability. Moreover, it deepens our understanding of the relationships between governance, institutions, and robustness within rural SESs.
