Will formula help my baby sleep?

Yes AND No

It’s true that formula is digested slower than breast milk.

Newborn babies need to feed frequently as their tummies are so small. This is true if they drink formula or breast milk.

After around 5 months, their tummies are bigger and their sleep cycles have changed (hello 4 month sleep regression!)

A baby who is taught independent sleep skills can fall back asleep without a feed or any other “sleep prop”

Will formula help my baby sleep? No, but independent sleep skills work almost EVERY time 👏🏼

📚 It’s officially back to school time!

Did you know most school aged children still need AT LEAST 9-10 hours of sleep per night?

Check out these back to school sleep tips:

✏️ Set a bedtime and stick to it! Keep in mind those 9-10 hours and the time it takes them to fall asleep

📚 Establish a bedtime routine. Kids thrive off a predictable schedule

📝 Try using a timer if your little one is resisting any step of the evening routine

🖍️ Turn off those screens 1-2 hours before bedtime

📘 Make sure the room is dark and use blackout curtains or blinds as necessary. If your little one needs a night light use the dimmest setting and try a red light

Summer sleep!

In most places around the world it’s summertime!

Even the best sleeping bubs can have some trouble during the summer due to more sunlight.

The sun comes up early and sets late which can disrupt our circadian rhythm AKA your body clock.

Ensure you have some type of blackout curtains or blinds and get that room 10/10 level of darkness.

Make sure the room is nice and cool, 20-22 degrees C (68-72 F).

Animals and people may also be up earlier or later (hello birds outside my window chirping at 4:30am!)

Use some white noise to drown out those external sounds.

Wednesday sleep tips

22/05/2023

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard parents tell me, “I just don’t think he’s ready for sleep training yet.” or, “I know it’s a bad habit, but it’s working for the time being. I’ll wean him off of it soon.”

Soon.

Soon, meaning, “In the meantime, I’ll just keep doing things I know are short-term solutions which are going to cause us problems down the road.”

How to identify your child’s sleep signals/sleepy cues?

Tired signs can include:

Rubbing their eyes
Yawning
Getting “fussy”
Jerky movements
Crying
A zoned out stare

Try to put your baby down at the first sign of tired cues and be mindful of wake windows!

The dreaded sleep regressions!

Except for the 4 month sleep regression, which is a re-organisation of the sleep cycles, sleep regressions are tied to something developmental going on in your little one.

These developments can cause temporary sleep disturbances, usually just a few weeks.

The good news is that if your little one has independent sleep skills these regressions will be over quickly!

What can you do? Practice any new skills during the daytime so that they can master them more quickly.

If you have any questions regarding a specific sleep regression contact me today.

When, if EVER, should you wake up your baby?!

A. Never
B. Only to feed
C. When it will help
D. Whenever you like

The answer is…YES! There are sometimes it’s best to wake your baby C. When it will help!

Newborns may certainly need to be woken up for feedings in those first few weeks to months. If your newborn is experiencing some day/night confusion in those early weeks it’s best to limit daytime naps to 2 hours.

Your baby may need to be woken up if they’re getting too much daytime sleep and it’s affecting their sleep pressure. This is especially true for the last nap of the day.

Managing a nap transition is another time you may need to wake your little one up from a nap. You may need to wake them a bit early to manipulate the rest of the day’s schedule.

Hello and welcome!

I’m Lily, a busy wife, Mom of two wild boys ages 3 and 6, early years teacher and former social worker.

When my oldest son was born, I expected him to sleep 3-4 hours a night. I was slightly horrified when this was NOT the case. He was up almost every 1.5-2 hours per night for MONTHS. Sadly, I had to return to work 12 short weeks after he was born. Due to my sleep deprivation, I could not function at work.

I am so passionate about helping families get the sleep they deserve. I know how hard those nights can be.

Sleep is NOT a luxury but a necessity.
