We focus on the ‘S’ in STEM. Why? Technology is not just about computer programming or coding. T

Update on our hungry caterpillars - the boys fed them and watched their caterpillars spun silky cocoons and molted into chrysalis. They watched in awe the process of metamorphosis and were so excited to release the butterfly into the wild.

Spring is here!! We found some very hungry caterpillars 🐛 on our calamansi tree. The boys asked how long it will take for them to turn into butterflies. Let’s build a caterpillar nursery and find out!
Remember not to leave them under direct sunlight!

CNY is approaching and it is time for a deep cleaning of the house. Why not combine this with a fun science experiment? Show your kids the volcano eruption experiment has a practical use - for drain cleaning 🧼🧽. All you need are some baking powder, citric acid and hot water!

Science experiment is so much fun! Even our dog is intrigued by the prism and the refraction of sunlight into a rainbow 🌈 (the seven colours of the visible light spectrum).

Our dog keeps bringing back seeds from his walks and we thought what an excellent way to teach the boys some biology on seeds.

We examined the seed design with hooks and spikes and tested if they would stick onto our clothes, just like they attach themselves onto the dog. We then planted the seeds to see if they will germinate.

The boys learnt that many plants are dependent on animals for seed dispersion and reproduction.

How do you explain global warming to the kids? How about the impact of hotter weather, melting ice in the North Pole and the rising sea level?

Why not do this fun activity with them? The boys had so much fun preparing the frozen ice, and then freeing the animals by melting the ice. They measured the ‘sea level’ before and after the ice melted and understood how global warming and rising sea level would impact our planet.

Try it yourself and let us know if you had fun!

Have your little ones ever asked you about colours and what’s in their water colour pens? This is a fun and simple science experiment to show them how colours are mixed. See the wonder on their faces when they see the colours separating out using this science technique chromatography! All you need are:
• filter paper or coffee filter
• several plastic cups
• some water colour pens
• water

To add another layer of learning, you can throw in some permanent markers and explain why there is no separation - because Water and oil don’t mix!!

Have fun!

Lighthouse experiment. We built an electrical circuitry and explored the properties of light. How is light reflected? What is refraction? What colours make up light?

This time we wanted to find out how clean daddy is, so we performed the ‘how clean is my dad?’ Experiment. Surprisingly daddy is very clean, spotless and basically boringly clean.

We did find one thing that daddy needs to clean and disinfect, which is his laptop bag that travels around with. Having picked up a collection of germs from around the world no wonder his bag gave us a really thriving colony of germs.....yuck!!!!!

So here’s the outcome of our microbes experiment:
1. The MacBook and TV remote definitely needs more frequent cleaning
2. The iPad and mum’s phones are cleaner as they get a daily wipe with alcohol.
3. Nicholas needs to pay more attention to his personal hygiene as he is dirtier than our dog Poppy 🤣🤣
4. Maxwell definitely cheated with his butt sampling because there is no way mummy’s nose is dirtier than his butt 😤😤😤
5. Maxwell does a good job at cleaning his hands (and feet and butt.....)

❗️❗️Take home message. Washing your hands frequently and wiping down your items with alcohol is important to keep those microbes at bay.❗️❗️

Hope you liked this experiment!!!
