Mr GUO Hongyuan , a PhD student supervised by Dr D**G Y. (Assistant Professor of CEE), received the ‘Best Student Presentation Award’ at the 9th Asia-Pacific Young Researcher Conference during 18-20 December 2019.

𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲


On 9 November 2019, 18 secondary students from 10 local school participated in the “Future Engineers Competitions – Structural and Fire Safety” hosted by CEE.

𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘧. 𝘊𝘚 𝘗𝘰𝘰𝘯, 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘌𝘌, 𝘨𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘮 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘧 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵.

Dr SY Zhu, Associate Professor of CEE, started the programme by giving a mini-lecture on “Driving sustainable growth of our city – the role of structural and civil engineers”.

Followed by the talk, a challenging team-based bridge construction competition was led by Ir CL Kwan, Teaching Fellow of CEE.

Participants were invited to visit the Structural Dynamics Laboratory and Hydraulics Laboratory of CEE, and the Fire Laboratory of the Department of Building Services Engineering (BSE).

Apart from the laboratory visits, a talk on “Fire Safety Engineering” was given by Dr XY Huang, Assistant Professor of BSE.

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫-𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡-𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 & 𝐀𝐢𝐫 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧


On 9 November 2019, CEE hosted a successful competition, namely Junior Earth Savers on Water & Air Purification, for secondary school students. There were 23 participants in the event.

The first part of the competition was about clean water with emphasis on nano-technology, advanced oxidation, and adsorption, whereas the second part of it was about air cleaning and odor control.

The programme was enriched by a talk on air problem and an introduction to CEE academic programmes given by Prof. S.C. Lee, Professor and Associate Head (Partnership).

Participants were given opportunities to visit Water and Waste Laboratory Odour Research Laboratory, and Advanced Environmental Microbiology Laboratories.

On 25 November 2019, Mr H. Y. Lin, Instructor of CEE, introduced CEE academic programmes to a group of S4 to S6 students at STFA Seaward Woo College.

On 8 November 2019, a group of Secondary 4 and 5 students from Lui Cheung Kwong Lutheran College visited our department. Prof S.C. Lee, Professor and Associate Head of CEE, gave an introduction to PolyU and CEE to the participants. Students were then invited to visit our laboratories.

The LPM Contractors Scholarship aims to provide financial assistance and encouragement to undergraduate students to pursue studies in geotechnical engineering.

The scholarship will be an award of HK$30,000, and will not be renewable.

𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐈𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀
Candidates should:
(a) be a final year undergraduate student at PolyU;
(b) have obtained a CGPA of 3.3 or above in your study at the time of application for the scholarship; (c) have obtained an average grade ‘B’ or above in at least one geotechnical subject in your study in the previous academic year;
(d) have undertaken/been undertaking/have committed to undertake at least one elective geotechnical subject in the applicant’s undergraduate programme; (e) have strong interest and passion to develop your career in geotechnical engineering in Hong Kong.

The shortlisted applicants are required to attend an interview by a Judging Panel, who will make recommendations on the award of the scholarship.

The universities and successful applicants will be notified of the results by February 2020. A certificate and the scholarship will be presented to the awardees during the HKIE GD annual dinner in March 2020.
