"Students finding their voice in Spanish: the development of critical competence"

In the recent plenary conference with Dr. Álvaro Sesmilo, the importance of Critical Competence in language learning, particularly in Spanish, was highlighted. Some key points to consider:

✨ Self-awareness and Values: Critical competence can guide students to discover their identity, values, and perspectives on life, as well as the norms and practices that define them.

💯 Meaningful Learning: Focusing on memorable educational experiences can enhance learning and knowledge retention.

🥰 Emotional Expression in the Target Language: Providing students the opportunity to express themselves in everyday situations with significant emotional content can strengthen their language proficiency.

😁 Linguistic Identity: Exploring linguistic identity in a non-immersive environment allows students to express desires, values, humour, and irony in a second language.

🎯 Identification Challenges: According to recent data, 24% of students do not fully identify when communicating in Spanish, indicating areas for growth and development.

💡 Promoting Critical Thinking: Critical thinking can be fostered in the classroom through structured and contextualized activities that connect with emotional aspects that invite reflection.

➡️ Experiential Learning Sequence: By presenting real-life cases, a sequence of knowledge activation, investigation, practice, and reflection can be facilitated, enriching the learning process.

Focusing on developing critical competence allows students to find their voice in Spanish and fosters deep and meaningful learning.
