"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Donald Liao Poon-huai, CBE, JP. Liao graduated from the first cohort of the Bachelor of Architecture in 1955. After graduating, he worked briefly for his former professor, Gordon Brown, first in his office and later at HKU. “On July 1, 1955, we started drawing the design for the city hall as it is built today,” he once said. He then left for the United Kingdom to study landscape architecture, returning after to Hong Kong to begin his career in the civil service.
Liao’s contribution to Hong Kong’s public housing policies was transformative. He joined the Housing Division in 1960. There, he designed and managed major social housing projects during the Ten-Year Housing Programme under Governor Murray MacLehose. He became the first Chinese to ascend to the position of chief architect during its most formative years. He designed four major estates, including Ma Tau Wai and Wah Fu. Notably, he implemented the Twin Tower Block and promoted comprehensive land-use planning based on English New Towns"

Over the years, many film and television productions have used Wah Fu Estate as a filming location. Recently, in addition to Call the Midwife and Ciao UFO, the upcoming Lunar New Year film The Snowball on a Sunny Day has also chosen the estate as a setting. The film follows a family who moves their grandmother—who mistakenly believes she has won the Mark Six lottery—from public housing to a luxury residence. As a so-called “luxury estate for ordinary people,” Wah Fu Estate is an obvious choice for such productions.

A film set in Wah Fu Estate has recently premiered in preview screenings. Through the experiences and shifting values of three estate residents, the film offers a sideways portrayal of Hong Kong’s transformations. Standing for several decades, Wah Fu Estate has carried different meanings in different historical periods. What is rarely mentioned, however, is that Wah Fu Estate appeared at the 1970 Japan World Exposition held in Osaka.

According to a 1969 report in the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong participated in the Expo with a standalone pavilion. The entrance corridor of the Hong Kong Pavilion used photographs to illustrate Hong Kong’s “Social Progress” from 1870 to 1970, including a pictorial narrative centred on a fictional character named Chan Mei Ching. Born into a family that migrated from mainland China to Hong Kong after the Second World War, Chan was only one year old when she arrived. The story begins with the Chan family being allocated a unit in the first resettlement block following the Shek Kip Mei fire. After graduating from secondary school, Chan Mei Ching trained as a nurse at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Her father, Mr Chan, initially worked as a truck driver and later advanced from a wage labourer to a vehicle owner. This success story presented to a global audience concludes with the Chan family’s move to Wah Fu Estate.

While the news report did not provide details of this series of dramatic photographs, archival records from the Government Records Service indicate that this section of the exhibition formed part of the theme “Our Living Quarters,” which showcased Hong Kong’s architecture, housing, and interior design. It is therefore likely that the Hong Kong Pavilion used photographs to contrast Wah Fu Estate with resettlement areas, thereby demonstrating improvements in Hong Kong’s living environment.

The BBC One television drama Call the Midwife aired the first part of its Christmas special last night (25 December). The story centres on the collapse of a convent building in Kowloon, which results in multiple casualties. A group of nuns and medical staff travel from their London headquarters to Hong Kong to assist with the rescue efforts. During the trip, a doctor and his wife affiliated with the order also set out to locate the birth mother of their adopted daughter. When they visit the address, they unexpectedly encounter gang members. Based on a close reading of the on-screen visuals, this scene appears to have been filmed at Wah Tai House. The story is set in 1971, which coincides with the year Wah Tai House was completed and occupied.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.
