The theme of the Global summit was 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘗𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯: 𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦. Prof Lo presented on the topic of 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦.
Prof. Edward Lo is the Chair Professor of Dental Public Health in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong. He is a past President of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Asia-Pacific Region and a past IADR Treasurer. His research interest is in oral epidemiology and preventive dentistry, and he has conducted many laboratories and clinical studies on new preventive and treatment methods for dental caries.

𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝-𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦! For this publication, the first author Dr Sheetal Manchanda received the Paul T. Taylor award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) for the best article published in the Pediatric Dentistry Journal in 2021. The co-authors were Dr Divesh Sardana, Dr Pei Liu, Dr Gillian H.M. Lee, Prof Edward C.M. Lo, and Prof Cynthia K.Y. Yiu.

𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧?

Dental caries has been considered infectious as well as transmissible. Streptococcus mutans is the primary bacteria causing caries and has been found to be transmitted to a child from various sources. Such transmission occurs through intimate contact, or through saliva-sharing activities like tasting food before feeding, sharing food/utensils/toys/any other item. Mother was thought about as the main source of transmission of bacteria due to the longest time she spends with the child for his care which is called a Vertical route of transmission. But as the children are spending a lot of their childhood days at nursery or school, they share various items as well as caries-causing bacteria. This transmission among children is called the Horizontal route and was studied through our systematic review by identifying similar genotypes of bacteria that cause caries among children. The result of the analysis suggests that children at home or in nursery/schools share similar Streptococcus mutans genotypes that increase their risk of having caries.

𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙬𝙚 𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙧 𝙫𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙮 𝙤𝙣 𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙗𝙖𝙗𝙮 𝙢𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙨?
Baby molars are the last teeth to be replaced by adult teeth. They will stay in our children’s mouths and serve the longest time, but their biting surfaces are prone to decay. It is important to locate the most effective and least invasive ways to protect these biting surfaces.

Our researchers went to the kindergartens in Hong Kong and conducted their randomised controlled trials there. First, they randomly allocated the kindergarten children into the sealant or varnish groups. The former group received glass ionomer sealants on their baby molars, while the latter had fluoride varnish applied on their teeth quarterly.

A total of 280 children and 989 baby molars were followed up for 1 year. Our 12 months results suggested that both minimally invasive procedures are similarly effective in preventing the decay on the biting surfaces of baby molars.
