係囡囡細個嘅時候,我陪佢睇英文Phonic 書,睇到啲句子入面包含好多同一個聲母、韻母嘅字,小朋友一邊讀一邊就可以感受到個嘴型、舌頭嘅擺放位置。我就係度諗,點解中文 / 廣東話好似無乜呢類型嘅書,去畀小朋友感受廣東話嘅發音呢?

然後,我無聊果陣就開始試下用唔同嘅韻腳作童謠,希望有一日可以整一本包含晒所有廣東話韻嘅童謠書。不過呢個計劃一直放係 to do list 嘅後排位置,只係得閒諗起就記得,無諗住認真落手去做。

到咗今年,我認識到一班推廣廣東話嘅有心人,佢地分享咗好多推廣廣東話嘅難處,海外小朋友學中文嘅樽頸位,我先開始諗,有冇啲嘢其實我都可以出啲力,而大家又啱用呢?

其中一個令我的起心肝要認真開始製作粵拼書嘅原因,係有一次聽《橋底老虎》作者--愛爾蘭媽媽 Peg 分享到,佢囡囡識聽識講但唔識閱讀中文,但係透過粵拼嘅幫助,佢囡囡可以自己有信心咁讀到一本中文粵文書。佢嘅分享令我「叮」一聲,其實海外有好多下一代嘅小朋友學中文嘅困難,都係記到意思但記唔到字嘅讀音,如果好似台灣圖書有注音咁,中文圖書都有粵拼,可能可以反向咁輔助到小朋友係海外學中文。

於是,我開始認真思考重拾呢個製作童謠書嘅計劃,內容除咗要有押韻嘅童謠,應該仲要加埋介紹聲母同聲調,變成一本可以畀大家認識粵拼,感受廣東話發音嘅圖書。

但其實,我自己本身對粵拼嘅認識都唔多,所以都係邊睇資料邊製作邊學,過程入面好多謝好多專家網友畀嘅意見,多謝 visual-fonts 製作咗一個咁方便嘅字體畀大家去使用,多謝我個囡做童工幫我一齊畫草稿同諗故事,多謝朋友義務幫手校正同後製排版,仲要多謝好多留言比心心我支持呢個計劃嘅朋友。

雖然我製作同整完之後都有人私下同我講廣東話巿場極有限,買書嘅人唔多(大家都係好有心去為我分析,為我著想,教我要多啲宣傳),但係透過我認識到推廣廣東話嘅有心人,令我明白廣東話嘅巿場係要大家一齊做出嚟嘅,大家都可以自由選擇買定唔買,但巿面上唔應該無咗呢個選擇。

Creating a Cantonese nursery rhyme book using all Cantonese Finals has always been something I wanted to do.

When my daughter was young, I would read her English phonic books. I noticed that the sentences contained many words with the same initial consonant and rhyme, allowing the children to feel the positioning of the mouth and tongue as they read. I wondered why there didn't seem to be similar books for Cantonese to help children learn the pronunciation.

So during my free time, I started experimenting with writing nursery rhymes using different rhymes, hoping to one day compile a book containing all Cantonese rhymes. However, this project was always at the bottom of my to-do list - I would think about it when I had time, but never really got down to actually doing it.

Until this year, when I connected with a group of passionate advocates for the Cantonese language. They shared the challenges they faced in promoting Cantonese, and the bottlenecks overseas children face in learning Chinese. That made me think - is there anything I can contribute to help with this?

One of the key reasons that motivated me to seriously start working on a Cantonese phonics book was when I heard the author of 'Under the Bridge' - an Irish mother named Peg - share that her daughter could listen and speak Chinese, but couldn't read it. However, with the help of Jyutping, her daughter was able to confidently read a Cantonese book on her own. Peg's sharing made me realise that there are many second-generation overseas children who struggle with Chinese literacy, as they can grasp the meaning but not the pronunciation. If Chinese books had Jyutping annotations like Taiwanese books have bopomofo, it could potentially help these children learn Chinese better.

So I started seriously revisiting my plan to create a nursery rhyme book. In addition to the rhyming nursery rhymes, I decided to also include introductions to initials and tones, turning it into a book that can introduce Jyutping and the Cantonese pronunciation.

However, my own understanding of Jyutping was quite limited, so I had to research and learn as I went along. The process involved a lot of grateful acknowledgements - to the experts and online friends who provided advice, to the visual-fonts team for creating a convenient font, to my daughter who helped as a 'child labor' to sketch drafts and brainstorm stories, to friends who volunteered to proofread and layout the book, and to all the supportive friends who showed interest in this project.

Although some people privately told me that the Cantonese market is very limited, with not many book buyers (they were just trying to provide analysis and suggestions, not to discourage me), I realise that the Cantonese market is something we all need to work together to build - people can freely choose whether to buy or not, but there should at least be the option available.

【國際識讀日 International Literacy Day】

◼︎On September 8th, we celebrate International Literacy Day (ILD), established by UNESCO in 1966. International Literacy Day aims to raise global awareness of illiteracy and improve literacy rates worldwide. It also promotes the universalization and enhancement of primary education in every country, enabling all children to go to school and learn to read and write. Ultimately, it seeks to enhance interpersonal communication, eliminate discrimination, promote cultural dissemination, and contribute to social development. It underscores the importance of "reading" and "writing" for individuals, communities, nations, and ethnicities.

Hambaanglaang’s goal is to help improve oral Cantonese (Oracy) for non-Cantonese speaker. To that end, all materials were prepared in Jyutman (written Cantonese) In Hong Kong, nearly 90% of adults use Cantonese as their primary language. Using Hambaanglaang materials those who speak Cantonese, can check their literacy in reading and writing Cantonese Cantonese, as the main carriers of Hong Kong culture, is worth cherishing and promoting, just like any other language or dialect. On this Literacy Day, let's celebrate Cantonese by sharing stories created by local volunteers in Jyutman(written in Cantonese).

A generous sharing by Christelijk Kantonees Onderwijs 愛育中文學校, a Cantonese school in the Netherlands that has been using HBL’s graded readers in their children’s Cantonese classes.

In 2017 we started Cantonese lessons (once a week) in the Netherlands with 8 kids in the city ‘Zoetermeer’. It was really challenging for us to find the right workbooks and materials, especially for third-generation kids who want to learn Cantonese. In that school year, we started with books which we bought in Hong Kong, but it didn’t work for us. All were based on mandarin and it didn’t match the age, stories, spoken language and written language etc. The year after we decided to make our own workbooks. It was a major step forward. The kids and parents like the new format and it was the best decision ever. In all our spare time, we put into the new workbooks. Nevertheless we were searching throughout the whole internet for projects or initiatives that empower our approach. In 2021 a friend approach us to look at Hambaanglang. We were surprised and also relieved that such an initiative came from Hong Kong itself. Enthusiastic as we were, we bought some books and contacted Hambaanglang (Joanne). She was really helpful and thoughtful which helped us a lot. In 2022 we had 90 kids in our school and we decided to add Hambaanglang books, for some of the classes. The kids were positive. In 2023 we decided to incorporate the Hambaanglang storybooks into six of the eight classes we have at our school. We are thankful for Hambaanglang's initiative, work, effort and dedication to keep the Cantonese language alive worldwide. Simple as it should be :). May God bless them.

👏恭喜冚唪唥大使-香港田徑運動員Kamran Khan喺香港田徑系列賽男子1,500米再創個人最佳紀錄。⭐️Kamran平時除咗兼顧運動同學業之餘,仲會積極練習廣東話。佢指出粵拼對佢練習廣東話非常有幫助,平時會將新學嘅詞彙用粵拼記低再同朋友練習聽說。🎯佢目標係有一日可以以香港運動員身份用流利廣東話接受訪問。

👏Congratulations to HBL ambassador, Kamran Khan, a Hong Kong athlete, for breaking a personal best record in the men's 1,500 meters in the Hong Kong Athletics Series. ⭐️In addition to taking care of sports and studies, Kamran also actively practices Cantonese. He pointed out that Jyutping is very helpful for him to practice Cantonese. He usually writes down new vocabulary in Jyutping and practices listening and speaking with friends. 🎯His goal is to one day be able to accept interviews in fluent Cantonese as a Hong Kong athlete.

Welcome! kindly join us in celebrating the completion of phase 1 of the HBL project.
All of us at HBL have much to be proud of.
HBL is possibly the biggest community-created collection of materials and tools for early Cantonese learning. Keeping the project open source and copyright free under a CC 4.0 license has become the gold standard that is now seriously considered by new initiatives in academia and publishing. Our use of written Cantonese is now being followed by more and more authors.
The automation that we built allowed us to write, illustrate, voice record and layout an average of 2 new titles a week. This output is faster than conventional publication methods by many multiples. In addition, we build the automation to generate interactive H5P videos, TPR Lesson generation and CEFR-based conversational practice. Remarkably all of this was achieved by one full-time colleague and the founders, working over 2 years with the very generous help of volunteers.
The project, funded by the founders, sales of books and donations, demonstrated that with the right design and clear-headed ex*****on, a lot can be done with very little outlay. ...

冚唪唥第一階段嚟到尾聲,係時候回顧一下之前三年我哋做咗嘅嘢,同埋之後嘅方向。

三年話長唔長,話短唔短,喺 Viveik,Joanne 同埋團隊所有人嘅努力之下,我哋推出咗實體故事書,整咗超過二百段故事影片,設計咗大量對話學習材料,開發咗粵拼跳跳紮轉換工具,仲聯絡咗海內外對廣東話有興趣嘅朋友,一齊創作咗好多新嘅內容。我覺得作為一個小型嘅群體,呢個成績都算係過得去嘅,可以同自己交代。

我哋不時會反思呢個計劃喺香港、喺粵語群體嘅定位。我哋深知幾個人嘅時間精力,係唔可以代攬晒一切廣東話事務。好好彩,呢個計劃嘅第一年,已經好多人加入我哋嘅行列,喺香港、喺其他地方,用唔同嘅方式推動粵語嘅文字創作,令到學廣東話變成一個「搞得掂」嘅過程。...

Each video contains diverse types of questions—Multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blanks etc. You will answer questions while listening to the story to test your comprehension. There are also grammar notes and cultural introductions. Either for self-study or guided learning by Cantonese teachers or parents, interactive videos are lesson materials ready for all to use.

▉ 對話練習工作紙 Conversational Practices Worksheets
25篇粵文分級3-4嘅對話練習工作紙正式推出。呢啲工作紙可以幫助粵語導師同家長帶領學習者練習對話。練習內容係參考歐洲共同語言參考標準(CEFR) A1級指定內容,再由粵語學者同導師修改編輯成廣東話版本,全部都係粵語初學者需要掌握嘅說話內容。
