๐จ Scam Alert! Beware of Impersonations Targeting University Students!๐จ
Scammers are posing as university professors and staff to deceive you into giving them money. These scams have affected students across all levels. Stay informed and learn the common tactics used by these scammers:
โ
๐ญTactic 1: โGuess Who I Amโ
Scammers call and ask you to guess their identity and impersonate whoever you name. Then they will switch to WhatsApp for communication and make up various reasons to request money.
โ
๐คTactic 2: Fake Staff Notifications
Imposters claiming to be university staff/event organisers may say the event time/location has been changed. They will then ask you to use WhatsApp and ask you to help transfer โadvance paymentsโ, with promises of reimbursement.
โ ๏ธ REMEMBER:
๐น Never believe callers in unsolicited incoming calls.
๐น University professors and staff will NEVER ask you to transfer money to personal accounts.
๐น Always verify the callerโs identity through official channels.

๐Quick Tip for Outlook Users: Get to know the AutoComplete List Feature in Outlook๐ง
Did you know Microsoft Outlook has an AutoComplete List feature? It helps by suggesting names and emails as you type in the To, Cc, or Bcc fields, based on your previous emails. While super handy, it can sometimes suggest the wrong contacts, especially when you are in a hurry. โจ
You can:
1. Remove individual AutoComplete List entries by clicking the X next to them when they pop up.
2. (For Classic Outlook) Remove the entire list by choosing File > Options > Mail in Outlook. Scroll down to Send messages, and click Empty Auto Complete List and OK.
3. (For Classic Outlook) Turn off the feature by choosing File > Options > Mail in Outlook. Then, scroll down to Send messages, uncheck Use Auto-Complete List to suggest names when typing in the To, Cc and Bcc lines and click OK.

๐จ Stay Alert to Deepfakes! ๐ค๐ญ
From fake social media ads, medical misinformation, to po*******hy using images without consent, deepfakes are everywhere. This particular AI technology is commonly abused to mimic and replace a person's face, voice or actions with malicious intent, and the impact could be profoundly damaging.
Here are four tips to protect yourself from deepfakes:
๐ก Verify identities: If you receive an unexpected video call, confirm the callerโs identity through trusted channels before sharing any sensitive information.
๐กBe cautious on social media: Limit the photos and videos you share. Regularly review privacy settings on your social media accounts, and avoid accepting friend requests from unknown individuals.
๐กEnsure data security: Implement appropriate technical measures to protect your social media and cloud accounts that store personal photos, videos and data.
๐กStay informed: Keep yourself abreast of the latest trends and news on cybercrimes to better understand and recognise potential threats.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) has recently published toolkits for schools and parents to address the misuse of AI deepfakes. ๐ https://www.pcpd.org.hk/english/news_events/media_statements/press_20251217.html
Seeing isn't always believing! Stay vigilant and ensure the safety of yourself and others! ๐ก๏ธโจ
