The GNCC’s North West Secondary company of the 1st cadet battalion held their annual Christmas dinner and Awards Ceremony on Thursday 5th of December at the school’s newly constructed TVET Building.
Special guests in attendance included the Regional Education Officer Miss Cliva Joseph, the current LT for Base Camp Everard LT Fields, the Headmistress for North-West secondary Miss Lauren Chung and a representative from the fire service, ex-cadet Christoff Alleyne.
Other attendees included our IC, current staff of instructors and cadets.
Cadets were celebrated for their achievements in the GNCC peogramme throughout the year.

On October 15th, NWSS cadets participated in a beautification project as part of our Agriculture Month observances. This was done at the base of the flag pole at NWSS.
Students planted seedlings and watered the soil in an attempt to create a beautiful plant garden in front of the school.

The GNCC NWSS cadets took part in the Commissioning Ceremony of the newly rebuilt North-West Secondary School, which was commissioned by His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali yesterday October 14th, 2024.

CDT CPL Samantha Warde is the best performing student for this year with 5 grade 1s and 6 grade 2s.

DAY 3: The Final Day of camp began traditionally with Flag Raising at 5:30 am. Cadets then headed to pack up before breakfast.
The Cadets had Breakfast at 8:30 and were addressed at a special session by the following persons:
1. Regional Chairman
2. Regional Executive Officer
3. Regional Education Officer
They all expressed confidence and support for the GNCC while committing to supporting the next camp in 2025.
The Cadets were then taken now on Tour (Site seeing) of the Town of Mabaruma. Places visited so far:
1. The World at Wanaina
2. The Green Park
3. The Hosororo Falls
4. The Silver Hill Cat Walk
PK left Mabaruma at 3:10pm for PK in three Passengers (Speed) boats.

DAY 2 of cadet battalion camp continued with preparations for the Drill Competition once the males all returned from the M.O.M walk. Each company practiced their drill format and commands before the competition began at 1. In addition, prior to the drill competition each cadet company competed against each other in the ‘Bleep’ Fitness Test, with the NWSS company emerging the winners.
At 1 the drill competition began, included representatives from the GDP, GPF and GFS. After the presentations, the North-West Secondary School company was announced as the winner by 5 points. To break it down, NWSS got to level 9.2 of the Fitness test and PKSS stopped at 8.5.
Following this the next activity included the G.L.A.D (Good Leadership & Discipline) competition, consisting of contestants from both cadet companies taking part in Impromptu Speech and Spelling B Competitions. Overall NWSS participating cadets took home the winnning points in both competitions. Nevertheless, both NWSS and PKSS males tied for Best Speaker, whilst an NWSS female cadet took home Best Speller.
Following this the cadets headed to prepare for the Talent Night before dinner. After dinner the talent show began, hosted by two cadets. Talents displayed included : acting, singing, dancing and poetry. The cadets thoroughly enjoyed the show before heading to bed to cap off Day 2.

The GNCC’s 1st annual cadet battalion camp was hosted by the North-West Secondary School company between the 15th-17th of June,2024 and was attended by cadets and instructors of the Port Kaituma Secondary School. The theme: ‘Enhancing Awareness and Adaptability While Preparing our Youths to Confront Challenges’.
Cadets partook in numerous activities, namely:
On the first day, cadets arrived, settled in and had lunch. The Opening Ceremony took place later down and was attended by special invitees. This was folllwed by dinner then compulsory rest.
Day 2 of the camp also coincided with Father’s Day. Therefore, after Flag Raising at 5:30 am was completed, followed by PT, the male cadets and instructors joined in on the annual Men on a Mission walk, alongside officials from the GDF, GPF and GFS.

On Saturday March 9th the Cadets of NWSS participated in a hike and fun day at the Silver Hill Recreational ground. It was a day where Cadets practiced their leadership and sports abilities.

Our IC was accompanied by three other GNCC instructors of NWSS at the annual staff retreat which took place at Bygeval Secondary School in Mahaica, Region 5.
The theme of the retreat was: « Preparing Our Youths to Better Confront Present and Future Challenges by Enhancing their Awareness, Adaptability and Agility Capabilities.

GNCC sessions for the cadets are held every Tuesdays and Thursdays in Blocks and include a mix of theoretical and practical subject areas including: Spanish , English, Dexterity, Physical Training, Mathematics, among others

Yesterday afternoon, our Cadets donated hampers to two senior citizens within the community as part of our Cadets’ Week 2024.
