This morning, students of the Jewellery Making Programme benefited from an informative presentation delivered by Detroy Dey and Clifton Franklin of the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS).
The session provided valuable insight into the role of GNBS in Guyana’s jewellery sector, including jewellery standards, product certification and gold testing. Students were also introduced to the GYS 50:2022 Specification for Gold Articles, with discussions covering gold purity and karat designation, marking requirements, solder and findings, and calculations for adjusting the purity of gold.
The presenters also explored methods used to determine gold purity, including the Modified Fire Assay Method and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) testing, highlighting the importance of accuracy, quality assurance and compliance within the jewellery industry.
The session complemented the students’ practical training by strengthening their understanding of the standards and quality requirements that support professional jewellery production in Guyana.

Throwback ‼️| Youth in Natural Resources Apprenticeship Programme
A look back at the Map Reading and GPS Navigation Workshop hosted by the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI) for participants of the Ministry of Natural Resources’ Youth in Natural Resources Apprenticeship Programme.
The one-day workshop combined classroom learning with practical application, giving participants the opportunity to develop their map-reading and GPS navigation skills.
A highlight of the day was the treasure hunt at the Guyana National Park, where participants put their GPS skills to the test by navigating to designated waypoints while working together as a team.
The workshop provided a fun and engaging learning experience while equipping participants with practical navigation, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Special thanks to the staff of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the instructors of the Guyana Mining School and Training Centre Inc. (GMSTCI) for their support in making the workshop a success.
