SafeCycle4Kids: Promoting Healthy Habits and Cycling Safety in Slovakia
👉 In May, OTI Slovakia organized an annual hiking event in Nitra to celebrate the 15th annual meeting of the national hiking association Klub Slovenských Turistov (Slovak Tourist Club). This event featured a variety of outdoor activities in the nearby hills and parks, with a special emphasis on cycling as well.
🚲 On Saturday, May 11, OTI Slovakia presented our project, SafeCycle4Kids, to the local community in Nitra. Making use of the nearby bike park, the event provided an excellent platform for children to practice safe cycling and enhance their biking skills.
🚲 SafeCycle4Kids is a project dedicated to promoting cycling among children not only as a fun and healthy habit but also as a sustainable means of transportation. The initiative highlights the importance of physical activity in preventing health issues associated with sedentary lifestyles, which are increasingly common among today's youth.
🚲 The event attracted many families and young cyclists. Through interactive sessions, children learned about essential cycling safety measures, including the proper use of helmets and other protective gear, understanding traffic signals, and improving basic cycling techniques.

📌 Workshop with Children in Slovakia: Promoting Cycling and Safety
🚴♀️ In the SafeCycle4Kids project promoting cycling among children, OTI Slovakia has successfully engaged over 100 children in a series of training sessions over the past few weeks. These sessions focused on teaching cycling basics, safety, traffic rules, and included interactive presentations for those new to cycling.
👉 The workshops were held in collaboration with local primary schools in Alekšince and the Metroklub, an after-school club situated near Nitra. The primary goal was to familiarize children with bicycles, highlight the importance of road safety, and also mention the numerous benefits of cycling for health and the environment.
Engaging and Educational Sessions
🚴♀️ Each session was designed to be both educational and engaging. Children learned essential skills such as proper use of safety equipment and importance of traffic rules. For those who had never cycled before, the interactive presentations provided a hands-on introduction to bikes, making them more motivated to try cycling.
Benefits Beyond Cycling
🚴♀️ In addition to practical cycling skills children were educated on how regular cycling can improve physical health, reduce stress, and contribute positively to environmental sustainability. The workshops also aimed to motivate children to incorporate cycling into their daily routines, particularly as a mode of transportation to and from school.
🙏 The initiative received strong support from local communities and schools, highlighting a collective effort to promote healthier lifestyles and safer road practices among young people.

European projects in the field of active travel and sports
🚲 SafeCycle4Kids concept is based on two principles that will increase the safetyand, therefore, confidence of young cyclists and their families:
📌 Parental perceptions of children’s cycling and traffic skills are an important correlate of children’s independent mobility.
📌 Increasing children’s cycling and traffic skills are important targets in cycling promotion among children. SafeCycle4Kids will focus on designing and delivering training on safe cycle to both kids and parents. Using parents as ‘mediators’ but also’ role models’, SafeCycle4Kids will overcome the barrier of feeling ‘unsafe’ and will ultimately increase the cycling uptake of kids and the whole family.
