✅The name Cleopatra has a fascinating origin that reveals a lot about the ancient world.
The name Cleopatra (Greek: Κλεοπάτρα, Kleopátra) is of Greek origin and is composed of two Greek words:
· κλέος (kléos) meaning "glory"
· πατήρ (patḗr) meaning "father"
Therefore, the most common translation of the name is "Glory of Her Father."
Key Points About the Name:
1. Hellenistic Roots: The name became famous through the Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt, which was a Greek royal family founded by Ptolemy I Soter, a general of Alexander the Great. Although they ruled Egypt, they maintained their Greek culture and language.
2. Not Unique: The most famous bearer of the name is Cleopatra VII Philopator (the one known for her relationships with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony). However, she was not the first. There were six other Ptolemaic royals named Cleopatra before her, including her mother and sister.
3. A Common Name: The name was not exclusive to Egyptian royalty. It was a reasonably common name for women in the Hellenistic (Greek-influenced) world, including in the Seleucid Empire and even in Macedonia itself.
4. Masculine Equivalent: The masculine equivalent of the name is Cleopatros and Patroclos (used for men), which carries the same meaning, "Glory of the Father."
5. Latinization: The name we use today, "Cleopatra," is the Latinized version of the original Greek Kleopátra. The Greeks would have pronounced it with all syllables: kleh-oh-PA-tra.
In summary, while the name Cleopatra is forever associated with the iconic Egyptian queen, its origin is firmly rooted in ancient Greek language and culture, proudly meaning "Glory of Her Father."

An upcoming Netflix documentary on Queen Cleopatra VII Philopator has raised lots of criticism and backlash on social media over the blackwashing of the legendary Macedonian ruler of Egypt. In the upcoming documentary, Cleopatra VII Philopator is falsely portrayed as a black ruler, when in fact the legendary ruler was of Greek Macedonian origin.

There’s was an online petition that had gained almost 100K signatures and was removed... 🤔

Greeks have 3 remembrance days for the Greek Genocide based on regions. April 6 is remembrance day for the genocide of Greeks from the region of Eastern Thrace. The Greek Genocide began in this region.

April 6 was chosen because it was on this day during Easter 1914 that the persecution of Greeks in Eastern Thrace intensified. The Greeks of Eastern Thrace refer to this day as Black Easter (Gr: Μαύρο Πάσχα). The persecution of Greeks in Eastern Thrace was met with such little international condemnation that it motivated the Young Turks to extend the persecution not only on Greeks elsewhere, but also on the Armenians a year later in 1915.

Aside from community groups run by Greeks from Eastern Thrace, virtually noboby else within the entire Greek community worldwide commemorates April 6. When it comes to the Macedonian issue or the Parthenon marbles, virtually every section of the Greek community shows interest, be it the mainstream Greek media, Greek community groups as well as notable individuals. For some reason, genocide isn't something Greeks are touched by.

If you're part of a Greek community group, Greek school society or any other Greek (or non-Greek) organization, consider commemorating Apri 6 this year through your social media account or simply by speaking to your constituents about it.
