Germany PhD Scholarships 2026
Two scholarships are available for doctoral candidates from developing countries wishing to undertake a 9-month research stay in Germany in the fields of water, climate, the environment, and adaptation.
The program is led by the Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre (ABCD-Centre), a collaborative initiative involving RWTH Aachen University, Technische Universität Dresden, the Asian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras, and UNU Resource Nexus, among others.

Duration: 9 months
WHAT THE SCHOLARSHIP OFFERS
Recipients may receive:
1. €1,200 per month for accommodation and living expenses;
2. Up to €105 per month for insurance;
3. Up to €1,000 travel allowance;
4. Up to an additional €1,000 for research materials and equipment via the host institution.
HOST UNIVERSITIES/INSTITUTES
Candidates must indicate their preferred host institution from the following:
1.RWTH Aachen University – Aachen, Germany;
2. Technische Universität Dresden – Germany;
3. UNU Resource Nexus – Dresden, Germany.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Candidates must:
1. Be a doctoral candidate;
2. Be enrolled full-time at a university in a developing country;
3. Have started their doctorate within the last three years;
4. Present a research project related to the ABCD-Centre's themes;
5. Demonstrate strong motivation to contribute to the field;
6. Possess a good level of English;
7. Be capable of adapting to a research environment in Germany. Required documents
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
1. Cover letter for the research stay (2–3 pages);
2. Sample scientific article;
3. Recent CV;
4. Choice of host institution;
5. Letter of support from the home institution;
5. Letter of invitation from the host researcher (preferred);
6. Statement regarding the ability to work remotely if necessary;
7. Proof of enrollment and recent transcript (issued within the last 6 months);
8. Copy of passport.
