Heraclitus Center for Social Science and Regional Development - Cyprus University of Technology

HERACLITUS" Center participates in the implementation of several European projects. All projects aim to enhance sustainable tourism through the use of technological applications (Augmented Reality, GIS, etc.) and through the promotion of integrated branding strategies for sustainable tourism. The research directions stem from the current social challenges and are the main priority for the research produced at the Center. Enriching the scientific methodology, HERACLITUS faces major theoretical and research dilemmas, as they arise daily from the new conditions and realities that are imposed.

Ethnofest was founded in 2010, as a civil non-profit society with the purpose of organising the Athens Ethnographic Film Festival, and with the greater vision to promote Documentary, Ethnography and Visual Anthropology and general the use of audiovisual media in social research, through a variety of activities and collaborations such as video production, distribution, workshops, lectures and other educational initiatives.

Visual anthropology and multimodal ethnography are a constantly evolving field and severely under-represented in Greek academia, thus Ethnofest is essentially the only platform aiming to expand dialogue on Visual Anthropology and disseminate knowledge of social and humanitarian sciences while being a meeting place for lecturers, researchers and students.

Our valuable partners include the Ministry of Culture, the Institut Français de Grèce, Instituto Cervantes - Atenas, the British Film Institute, MedINA (https://med-ina.org/), the Documentary Educational Resources (DER), the University of Manchester as well as the Onassis AiR, John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

Key activities include:
Ethnofest – Athens Ethnographic Film Festival (2010 - today)
Athens Summer School in Visual Ethnographic Practices (2015 - 2019 & 2022 - today)
Ehnofest’s Ethnographic Film Database (2016 - today)
Ethnofest Documentary Productions (2018 - today)
Ethnofest Educational Programmes (2020 - today)
Research Programmes (2016 - today)

CIPHER: Hip Hop Interpellation is an ongoing public scholarship project mapping hip-hop knowledge from communities across the world. It has been funded by Consolidator (2019-2024) and Proof of Concept (2025-2026) grants from the EU's European Research Council—and is centred in the Department of Music at University College Cork, National University of Ireland.

CIPHER is the world’s first global hip hop knowledge mapping project, investigating the international spread of hip hop culture and its attendant musical, lyrical, artistic, and performative forms on six continents. Further, it is building new infrastructure, ethnographic, digital, and arts practice research methods, as well as socio-cultural theory for the interdisciplinary field of hip hop studies. Through its focus on hip hop’s ‘third space’ of dialogue and transformation between people of diverse backgrounds and UN SDGs including 4.) Quality Education, 5.) Gender Equality, 10.) Reduced Inequalities, and 16.) Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, CIPHER has raised both the academic and community impact of hip hop studies. Furthermore, its publications—including the OA journal Global Hip Hop Studies—and arts-practice community and conferencing activities in collaboration with the European Hip Hop Studies Network offer a new state of the art for the field.

Single Step’s mission is to support, motivate and empower LGBTI (“Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex”) youth, their families, friends and allies in Bulgaria through the process of recognizing, coming out and affirming their sexual orientation and gender identity.

Single Step pioneered and now provides accessible and affordable psychological, health and career support services that fill a critical gap for LGBTI youth in Bulgaria. Given the alarming rates of discrimination, stigma, and lack of support faced by young LGBTI people, we are working holistically to address key challenges in the areas of family and social connections, education, and employment.

Single Step operates one of the largest LGBTI social enterprises in Europe, The Steps. Our innovative venture operates as a vibrant community center, bar, café, coworking space, and multifunctional event venue. The unique business model of our social enterprise contributes to our financial sustainability and independence and enhances the visibility of the Foundation and its mission, attracting new supporters and partners.
