๐ŸŒ UPRISE: The End of a Project, Not the End of the Journey
As the UPRISE project comes to an end, we look back with gratitude and pride at what we have achieved together. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ“š

Through research, dialogue, and collaboration, we explored the realities of religious inclusion in education, identified key challenges faced by schools and educators, and transformed these insights into practical resources, training materials, and tools to support more inclusive learning environments. ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŽ“

Our work has shown that inclusive religious education requires not only openness and commitment, but also the right resources, knowledge, support, and opportunities for meaningful change. ๐ŸŒโœจ

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ We invite educators and everyone interested in inclusive education to explore and freely use the resources available on the UPRISE LMS platform:
๐Ÿ‘‰ https://eclass.uoa.gr/courses/SOCTHEOL569/

๐ŸŒฑ Together, we can create learning environments where every child has the opportunity to participate, learn, and thrive.

A heartfelt thank you to all the researchers, educators, partners, experts, and everyone who contributed to UPRISE and to the wider goal of making education more inclusive for all. โค๏ธ

The project may be ending, but the commitment continues. To everyone working for inclusive religious education: keep learning, keep collaborating, keep challenging barriers, and keep creating space for every student to belong. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿคฒ

And this is certainly not goodbye. While the UPRISE project is coming to a close, our activities and commitment to inclusive education continue. Expect to hear from us again! ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ“ฃ

The true value of research lies in the fact that it can identify challenges and help point the way towards practical change. ๐ŸŒ

Here is a snapshot of what UPRISE research has revealed about religious inclusion, educators, and the role of technology in turning inclusive values into classroom practice.

UPRISE research highlights a clear message: educators are highly open to religious inclusion, but positive attitudes alone are not enough.

Key findings point to:
๐Ÿ”น strong positive attitudes towards inclusive education;
๐Ÿ”น persistent structural barriers, including delays in appointing religious education teachers;
๐Ÿ”น the need for clearer institutional frameworks, standardized curricula, and approved teaching resources;
๐Ÿ”น the important role of digital tools in supporting participatory and student-centred teaching practices.

๐Ÿ’ก The project also highlights the potential of technology as a bridge between inclusive beliefs and classroom practice, while emphasizing the need for targeted digital support and mentoring for educators.

๐Ÿค Through the collaboration of four universities from Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania, UPRISE has combined qualitative and quantitative research with the development of 36 lesson plans and a dedicated LMS platform, transforming research findings into practical resources for educators.

As the project approaches its conclusion in August 2026, the UPRISE consortium remains committed to supporting schools in creating โ€œbrave spacesโ€ where every student, regardless of their faith, can feel respected, included, and empowered to thrive.

๐Ÿ‘ A warm thank you to all project partners, researchers, educators, and participants who contributed to this journey!

๐ŸŒฑ Together, we continue building more democratic, inclusive, and respectful learning environments.

๐ŸŒ UPRISE at the County Conference on Inclusive Education in Suceava, Romania

๐Ÿ“… On 3 March 2026, the UPRISE project was presented by Diana-Sรฎnziana Duca at the County Conference โ€œIntegration of Children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in the School Environment โ€“ Perspectives and Aspirationsโ€, held in Suceava, Romania.

๐Ÿค The event brought together educators, specialists, and professionals interested in inclusive education, providing a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, share good practices, and discover projects addressing current challenges in education.

๐Ÿ“š During the conference, Diana-Sรฎnziana Duca introduced the main objectives of UPRISE and shared the progress achieved so far, highlighting the project's key activities and expected outcomes. Particular attention was given to how UPRISE aims to support teachers and schools through research and practical educational resources designed to strengthen inclusive practices.

๐ŸŒ๐ŸŽ“ UPRISE at END 2026: Sharing Research on Religious Inclusion in Education

We are pleased to share that Diana-Sรฎnziana Duca, representing the Erasmus+ UPRISE โ€“ Unity in Diversity project, participated in the International Conference on Education and New Developments (END 2026), held in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, from 20โ€“22 June 2026.

๐Ÿ“š During the conference, Diana-Sรฎnziana Duca presented the paper "Managing Religious Diversity in Primary Schools: Educators' Perspectives on Inclusion, Belonging, and School Climate", co-authored by researchers from ศ˜tefan cel Mare University of Suceava and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Based on 30 semi-structured interviews with teachers, Islamic religion teachers, minority-school educators, and school principals across Thrace, Greece, the study explores how everyday educational practices shape Muslim pupils' experiences of inclusion and belonging.

๐Ÿ”Ž The research highlights several important challenges affecting religious inclusion in schools:
๐Ÿ”น inconsistent procedures for Religious Education exemptions;
๐Ÿ”น delays in appointing Islamic religion teachers;
๐Ÿ”น limited educational resources and the absence of a standardized curriculum for Islamic Religious Education;
๐Ÿ”น the need for clearer institutional procedures and stronger collaboration with families.

๐Ÿค At the same time, educators expressed strong support for inclusive, interactive, and dialogical teaching approaches, including storytelling, role-play, and thematic projects as effective ways to foster mutual respect and intercultural understanding.

๐Ÿ’ก One of the study's key conclusions is that religious inclusion depends not only on teachers' commitment, but also on coherent institutional policies, adequate educational resources, and supportive school leadership.

๐Ÿ“– Following the conference, the authors will be invited to submit an extended version of the paper for publication as a chapter in the Education Applications & Developments book, published by inScience Press, further increasing the visibility of the project's research outcomes.

๐Ÿ‘ Our sincere thanks to all co-authors and project partners for their excellent collaboration and valuable contribution to this research.

๐Ÿ“šโœจ What did we learn through UPRISE?

Over the course of the project, we spoke with teachers, principals, and religion instructors across Thrace and surveyed more than 100 educators to better understand the realities of religious inclusion in schools. ๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿค

๐Ÿ”Ž Our research revealed that:
๐Ÿ“Œ educators are committed to including every student, regardless of faith;
๐Ÿ“Œ late appointments of Imams and religion teachers often left students without lessons for months;
๐Ÿ“Œ Islamic education materials were frequently limited or unavailable;
๐Ÿ“Œ unequal access to technology affected classroom practices;
๐Ÿ“Œ scheduling challenges were widespread across all school types.

Importantly, the research showed that the main barriers were not a lack of goodwill, but rather insufficient support, resources, and long-term planning. ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“Š

These insights have already informed the development of practical project outputs, including teacher-training resources, an online learning platform, and guidance materials designed to promote religious inclusion in schools. ๐Ÿš€๐ŸŒ

The research findings are also being disseminated through scientific publications, helping extend their impact beyond the UPRISE project itself. ๐Ÿ“‘โœจ

๐ŸŒ UPRISE Project Update
As our project draws to a close, join us over the coming weeks as we reflect on its key milestones, celebrate our greatest achievements, and highlight the most valuable results with the greatest practical impact.

But first, a quick recap of the project itself ๐Ÿ‘‰

UPRISE โ€“ Unity in Diversity: Promoting Religious Inclusivity in Greek Muslim Education, an Erasmus+ project supporting more inclusive and culturally responsive education for Muslim pupils in Thrace, Greece.

๐Ÿ“Š Key facts
โ€ข ๐Ÿ”น Duration: 24 months (Sept 2024 โ€“ Aug 2026)
โ€ข ๐Ÿ”น Funding: EUR 250,000 (Erasmus+ KA220-SCH)
โ€ข ๐Ÿ”น Partners: 4 universities โ€” Greece ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท, Bulgaria ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฌ, Romania ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ด
โ€ข ๐Ÿ”น Coordinator: National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

โœ… What's been achieved so far

Our consortium successfully completed both the qualitative and quantitative phases of the research, conducting interviews and focus groups with teachers, school principals, and religious education staff across Thrace, alongside a large-scale survey capturing the experiences and perspectives of teachers and pupils throughout the region. Together, these activities provided valuable insights into the realities, challenges, and opportunities of religious diversity in schools.

Building on this evidence, the project developed a comprehensive digital Learning Management System (LMS) and a rich collection of pedagogical resources designed to support educators in creating more inclusive learning environments. These freely accessible materials offer practical guidance, lesson plans, and teaching strategies that can be readily integrated into everyday educational practice. ๐Ÿ“š

The findings also informed a set of evidence-based recommendations aimed at strengthening religious inclusivity in education. Addressed to educators, school leaders, and policymakers, these recommendations provide practical guidance for fostering respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning environments where every student feels valued, represented, and supported.

๐Ÿ”œ What's next
Disseminating the project results and sharing our evidence-based recommendations with educators, schools, policymakers, and other stakeholders to support more inclusive educational practices.

Inclusive education is built through everyday classroom experiences that encourage every child to participate, express themselves, collaborate with others, and feel that they belong. ๐Ÿ’ฌโœจ
This educational philosophy lies at the heart of the UPRISE Project. Rather than offering isolated teaching materials, the project provides educators with practical, adaptable resources that help integrate inclusion into everyday teaching practice. ๐Ÿ“š

The UPRISE pedagogical package supports teachers in addressing topics such as diversity, empathy, equality, social justice, environmental responsibility, active citizenship, and cooperation through engaging, student-centred activities. ๐ŸŒฑ

The lesson plans are designed to be flexible, allowing teachers to adapt them to different classroom contexts, learning needs, and group sizes while ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to participate meaningfully. ๐Ÿ“–
