From July 13 to 16, the DataGEMS EOSC project took part in "Science Summer at IPB" 2026, presented by partners from the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB). As part of this 20th edition, secondary school students from across the country got hands-on with scientific research, and DataGEMS brought curiosities about LLMs, AI, and how these technologies show up in everyday life to the next generation of researchers. 🧪✨

DataGEMS at the 13th International Summer School on Digital Government - OpenGov2026

The DataGEMS project participated in the International Summer School on Digital Government – OpenGov26, held in Samos, Greece, bringing together an international community of researchers, academics and practitioners to exchange knowledge and discuss the future of digital governance.
Organised by the Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering of the University of the Aegean, the event featured the 12th International Summit on Digital Government (Samos Summit) alongside the OpenGov26 Summer School. The programme focused on some of the most key topics in digital governance, including Artificial Intelligence, open data, smart cities, digital public services and innovative approaches to education, while fostering collaboration among academia, public sector organisations and European research projects. It also covered topics such as AI for digital governance, data-driven decision making, policy modelling and interoperability, which are highly relevant to the development of AI-driven solutions for governmental and parliamentary data and services.
During the event, Dr. Georgia Koutrika, Research Director at Athena Research Center and Coordinator of the DataGEMS project presented the project’s approach to AI-powered data discovery in parliamentary language resources. The lecture “DataGEMS approach for AI Data Discovery in parliamentary language resources” highlighted how DataGEMS leverages AI, semantic technologies and natural language processing to enhance the discovery, interoperability and reuse of multilingual legislative datasets.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and explore the role of data management, innovation and emerging technologies in shaping the future of digital transformation.

Will AI conquer the world—or at least data management?

A thought-provoking question was explored by Dr. Georgia Koutrika, Research Director at Athena Research Center and Coordinator of the DataGEMS project, in her invited talk at IEEE MDM 2026 in Athens.

The presentation explored how Artificial Intelligence is beginning to reshape the core of database management systems. It discussed emerging approaches such as learned query optimizers, which leverage past executions and data characteristics to improve query planning, and LLM-based semantic operators that allow systems to interpret, align, and reason over heterogeneous data, schemas, and modalities.
It also addressed key challenges in the field, including the difficulty of ensuring that learned optimizers generalize effectively and behave consistently across different workloads, the need to define semantic operators with the formal properties required for systematic optimization, and the challenge of establishing reliable evaluation methodologies for comparing emerging database architectures.

These challenges strongly resonate with the vision of DataGEMS, which aims to enable intelligent discovery, integration, and exploration of complex and heterogeneous datasets through advanced data management, AI, and machine learning technologies.

From June 29 to July 3, 2026, DataGEMS project results were presented at the 23rd ECMI Conference on Industrial and Applied Mathematics in Kaunas, Lithuania. DataGEMS was represented by Ana I. Pereira, who presented the work Learning with Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Modern World, and by Beatriz Flamia, who presented Challenges and Pathways to Inclusive Higher Education Mathematics. The conference provided an excellent opportunity to promote the MathE use case among mathematics professors, foster new collaborations, and further expand the DataGEMS network.

On June 18, 2026, Thora Hagen (IDS Mannheim) delivered the first DataGEMS Language Pilot Study Workshop, hosted by the Leibniz Institute for the German Language, Department of Digital Linguistics (online). The session presented DataGEMS, a next-generation platform for discovering, analyzing, and reusing open data across domains, developed within the EOSC ecosystem.

The workshop focused on the Language Use Case, which addresses the structured exploration, thematic search, semantic analysis, and educational transformation of multilingual text corpora through five sequential pilots:

- Corpus Profiling (UC4P1). The currently active pilot, offering a feature-based representation of unstructured texts, using two editions of the Encyclopædia Britannica as its data basis.
- Thematic Search (UC4P2). Domain-specific knowledge synthesis from corpora, with a focus on content.
- Semantic Change (UC4P3). Diachronic analysis of meaning change, with a lexical focus.
- Educational Transformation (UC4P4). Simplification of complex content for learners.
- Human-in-the-Loop (UC4P5). Expert guidance and pipeline control throughout all pilots.

The presentation also addressed why existing systems are not optimal, limited search, poor metadata, and single data type support, and how DataGEMS overcomes these through content-aware search across datasets, integration of different modalities, and transparent use of modern LLMs, all in line with FAIR principles.

This workshop represents an important milestone for the DataGEMS project, demonstrating significant progress toward FAIR, content-aware data discovery and exploration for the digital humanities and computational linguistics communities.

On 19 June, DataGEMS was present at SASYR – Symposium of Applied Science for Young Researchers, held at the Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e do Ave (IPCA), in Barcelos, Portugal. Now in its sixth edition, SASYR brings together junior researchers from the four research centres ADiT-lab (IPVC), 2Ai (IPCA), CeDRI (IPB) and GECAD (IPP), offering a friendly and relaxed environment to present ongoing work, discuss recent results, and exchange ideas among young researchers.

DataGEMS was represented with the poster "Refactoring Proposal for the MathE Platform", authored by Giulia Vieira, Tânia Silva, Beatriz Azevedo, and David Verde, from CeDRI, IPB.

During May and June, a team of 10 professors and 30 engineering students from the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), Portugal, conducted extensive validation and testing to evaluate the quality of the AI-based services integrated into the MathE Platform. These activities focused on the three pilots developed within the DataGEMS project:
• Personalized multiple-choice question recommendations. IPB and CNRS teams are working together on a recommendation system to assess the pedagogical quality, correctness, and suitability of personalized recommendations for students.
• Query recommendation. Developed jointly with the Athena Research Center, this pilot recommends relevant educational resources to students based on queries and learning needs, supporting more personalized learning pathways within the MathE platform.
• Generation of multiple-choice questions and associated metadata. Developed in partnership with ZHAW, this pilot focuses on the automatic generation of MCQs together with educational metadata, including keywords and difficulty levels, to enrich the platform's learning content and improve resource discoverability.

The validation process aimed to assess and improve the accuracy, usability, and educational value of each pilot before their integration into the MathE platform. The multidisciplinary collaboration between IPB, CNRS, ZHAW, and Athena enabled a comprehensive evaluation from pedagogical, scientific, and technical perspectives. These achievements represent an important milestone for the DataGEMS project, demonstrating significant progress in AI-assisted educational content generation, natural language processing, educational resource discovery, and the implementation of FAIR principles.

On June 12, Sihem Amer-Yahia presented the plenary "Policy Reusability for Multi-Objective Sequential Decision Making" at the International Conference on Optimization, Learning Algorithms (OL2A 2026) and Applications held in Malaga - Spain. The DataGEMS was represented at OL2A by Ana Pereira, Gabriel Leite, and Sihem Amer-Yahia. It was an excellent opportunity to disseminate information about DataGEMS activities and expand the project network.
