The 48-hour hackathon “AI & the Ocean”, co-organized by the Athena Research Center and the EU projects DataGEMS (co-organizer), Code4Europe, and Co-Waters, successfully took place at the French Institute of Greece (25–27 November 2025). The opening session was led by Eleni Petra, Chair of the Organizing Committee and Project Manager of DataGEMS, who welcomed participants and introduced the goals, themes, and rules of the hackathon.
With 72 registrants, 10 teams, and 37 interdisciplinary participants from AI, data science, marine research, engineering, and environmental sciences, the hackathon showcased how cutting-edge technology and scientific expertise can address critical challenges for the Mediterranean.
Challenges:
• Marine heatwave impacts on aquaculture from DataGEMS
• Marine biodiversity monitoring
• Shipping impacts on marine life
• Marine radioactivity monitoring
• Meteo@DataGEMS real-time 3D/2D weather visualisation
The final presentations demonstrated high technical depth and creativity, with 5 teams focusing on marine heatwaves, 2 on shipping impacts, 1 on biodiversity, and 1 on Meteo@DataGEMS.
The event highlighted the power of collaboration between researchers, students, professionals, and institutions — and marked an important step toward science-driven, innovative solutions for a resilient Mediterranean.
DataGEMS proudly contributes to this mission, advancing the use of data and AI for healthier oceans and sustainable blue economies.

From 24 to 30 November, Portugal celebrates its annual Science and Technology Week, a nationwide initiative featuring over 1000 events that highlight the scientific knowledge and innovation produced across the country.

On 24 November 2025, a meaningful discussion on the future of the Greek research ecosystem took place at the Law School Library of NKUA, where Athena Research Center and the Law School Library brought the community together to explore the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information and its implications for Greece.
The event highlighted how the Declaration is shaping the global landscape of trusted, open, and interoperable research information. Speakers presented key national initiatives from open and FAIR research infrastructures to new monitoring services and reform efforts in research assessment showcasing the dynamic progress unfolding in Greece.
DataGEMS was represented by its Project Manager Eleni Petra , who attended the event and connected the initiative’s mission with the broader movement toward openness in research. Her presence underscored DataGEMS’ commitment to strengthening high-quality, interoperable research metadata and supporting more transparent and equitable research ecosystems across Europe.
The momentum around Open Research Information in Greece has never been stronger, and DataGEMS is proud to be part of this evolving landscape.

This Tuesday marks the start of the Hackathon “AI & OCEAN: INNOVATION... IN 48 HOURS!”, as part of the Science Festival “The Voice of the Ocean.” A collaboration between the Institut Français de Grèce, DataGEMS and several other institutions. The hackathon proposes a collective challenge: “Imagine specific and innovative solutions for the protection of the Mediterranean.”

DataGEMS Project, represented by our Project Manager Eleni Petra, together with AthenaRC, participated as a co-organiser and supporter of the Apps4Athens Hackathon 2.0: AI Edition. The event brought together nearly 200 students, from universities and high-schools, as well as researchers and professionals, all of whom remained fully engaged throughout the two days, 15-16 November 2025.
More than 40 teams were formed, each developing high-quality problem statements and innovative solutions addressing the challenges faced by the City of Athens, drawing on models and proposals inspired by existing projects, including DataGEMS.
At the end of the event, five teams were selected: one team was awarded the first prize, while two teams shared the second prize and two the third. Their standout work focused on pressing urban issues such as waste management and traffic overload.
All participating teams showcased remarkable vision, creativity, and effective adoption of AI techniques, making the hackathon a truly inspiring experience.

🌊 Hackathon “AI & OCEAN: INNOVATION... IN 48 HOURS!” — November 25 to 27
As part of the Science Festival: The Voice of the Ocean, which takes place from November 10 to 27, the French Institute of Greece, in collaboration with DataGEMS (represented by ARC and NOA partners), is organizing a 48-hour hackathon dedicated to creating innovative solutions for the protection and sustainable future of the Mediterranean Sea.
Participants from the fields of data science, AI, blue economy, marine biology, meteorology, and the public/private sectors will work together on challenges related to: marine ecosystem monitoring, climate and environmental data, AI-based solutions for ocean protection, responsible innovation, and sustainability.

During November 3–5, DataGEMS, represented by our project manager Eleni Petra, participated in the EOSC Symposium 2025, in Brussel, Belgium.
Bringing together around 500 participants, the event marks the transition of the EOSC Federation to its operational phase.

🌊 Festival of Science: The Voice of the Ocean (10–27 November 2025) celebrates science, innovation, and collaboration to raise awareness about the challenges and opportunities of our oceans. Organized by the French Institute of Greece, the festival features conferences, workshops, exhibitions, and interactive events exploring marine biodiversity, sustainable technologies, and the role of Artificial Intelligence in protecting the marine environment.

In the second week of October, DataGEMS had the pleasure of meeting with three EOSC projects: Lumen, Data Commons, and RAISE Suite. It was discussed how we can collaborate to strengthen interoperability, share knowledge, and create synergies within the EOSC ecosystem.
